It was born in northern France, and little by little was spreading and imposing itself on Romanesque. It is called so by the Goths, as a derogatory term. Periods: First Gothic: second half of XII century. Use of cross vault. The abad Suger defends the use of precious metals in eucharisty and cathedrals. Theory of light of Pseudo-Dionisio Areopagita. Classic Gothic: first half of XIII century. Disappearance of tribune, with little triforium and bigger windows. Disappearance of sexpartite vault and use of cross vault. Use of buttresses. Rayonant Gothic: second half of XIII century. Called so by the great rosettes and very big windows. Architecture is just an skeleton for crystals. In XIV century there were wars, so about art they just finishes old cathedrals and added more chapels or other accessory constructions. Flamboyant Gothic: XV century. Much more decoration until mid-XVI century. With peace, new constructions rise. First Gothic. Saint Denis: the first built things are the facade and nartex. The naves will be prerromanesque style until the rayonant gothic. Rossete in the facade, large windows. Three covers. Sens: use of sexpartite vault. It has arches, triforium and clerestory, without tribune. Use of columns to sustain. Laon: use of large columns. This one has arches, tribune, triforium and clerestory. The central nave is more illuminated, with a great rosette. Use of gables. Noyon: rich in forms and no preoccupation in echonomy of materials. Notre Dame (Paris): five naves, with transept enrolled in the plant. Double ambulatory. Use of sexpartite vaults in central nave, except in the center of the transept (crucero in spanish). Use of arches, tribune and clerestory, without triforium. Use of buttresses as drains. Classic Gothic. Chartres: use of gables in facade, with sculptures about the Virgin. More movement. Great rossete and windows. Reims: here the french kings had important acts. It goes from three naves to five at the transept. Use of cross vault. Very tall gables. In the sculptures you see the smiling angel, and also the coronation of the Virgin. Amiens: the greatest of all. Three gates with deep flares. Great rossete in the central way. Final judgement is represented in sculptures. The Golden Virgin is in the mullion, that interact with the Child, and also the smile. Rayonant Gothic. Sainte Chapelle: to have the relics that Louis IX bring (the crown of thorns and the spear of Longinus). It is like a relicary of stone and crystal. The plant has two levels. The inferior one is the called crypt, with three naves, and at the level of ground is the other, with only one nave. There isn’t ambulatory. The inferior plant is very rich in decoration, with cross vaults at low height. The superior plant is full of crystals. Palais des Papes of Avignon: it has nice frescoes. Flamboyant Gothic. Saint-Ouen: famous by its architecture and its great and ancient organ. Rouen: the west facade has two towers, masterpieces. Great spire of iron added in XIX century. Saint Wulfram de Abbeville. Madeleine de Troyes. Jacques-Coeur Palace. Sculpture XIII Century: stand out the sculptures in Notre Dame de Paris, Reims and Amiens. XIV Century: sculptures found in funerary chapels, altarpieces, tombs, ivory figures… Claus Sluter: he works in the end of XIV century. He is a dutchman working in France. He add realism and great expressive force, with broken folds. Tomb of Philip the Bold. Well of Moses: he did this with help of his nephew Claus de Werve. At the beginning it was a Calvary for the cloister of Champmol, with six figures of prophets in the base of the font: Moses, David, Jeremiah, Zechariah, Daniel and Isaiah, and the Crucifixion as fragment. The sculptures are liberated of the framework. They are almost portraits. XV Century: in the mid of this century rises a opposite tendency to this pathetic art.
