Al Arabiya wins U.N. Gold news award for Syria coverage
Al Arabiya News Channel has been awarded this week its third global medal for its United Nations coverage. Reporter and U.N.-New York bureau chief, Talal Al-Haj won his record third U.N. Correspondents Association, UNCA, award for his 2011-2012 coverage of the Syrian crisis. Every year journalists from around the world submit their coverage of U.N.-related issues ranging from Climate Change to war in Syria, to be evaluated by independent judges that decide the winners of the Gold, Silver or Bronze medals based on the quality of their work. In 2007, Talal Al-Haj, Al-Arabiya NY Bureau Chief was awarded a gold medal for his documentary work on the U.N. and the Middle East. In 2010, Al-Haj again won a gold medal for his 18-day around the world documentary on climate change, and his reporting on the Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen. This year, Talal Al-Haj has been awarded gold medal for the third time for his coverage of the U.N. and failures of its Security Council and the U.N. body in helping put an end to the Syrian crisis and save thousands of civilian lives. The awards were given in the name of journalists who lost their lives covering stories from around the world, The Elizabeth Memorial Prize for written media and the Ricardo Ortega Memorial Prize for Broadcast journalism. The ceremony was attended by the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson, U.S. ambassador Susan Rice and many high-level ambassadors and diplomats, as well as goodwill ambassador, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. During his thank-you speech for winning the gold prize this year, Al-Haj, donated his prize which amounts to $10,000 to those suffering most from the crisis he's been following for the last 21 months. "This really prompted me to donate the $10,000 first prize to the U.N. High Commission for Refugees ... I dedicate this gold medal to the Syrian civilians and mothers and children in Syria. Although we have failed them so far in the Security Council and were unable to stem the violence at an early stage when it was possible to do so, this shows that they are not forgotten," said Al-Haj in his speech. The president of UNCA, Mr. Giampaulo Pioli said: "we are very touched, 250 entries from the best reporters in the world, and the winner donates his prize to the Syrian refugees. This speaks volumes about the freedom of press and journalists' freedom of judgment." Meanwhile Dr. Abdulmohsen Alyas, the Saudi Acting Chargé d'Affaires added "Al Arabiya has wonderful coverage, and Talal Al-Haj won for the third time due to his distinguished reporting. It is a record in the U.N. history."- published: 20 Dec 2012

Michael: The Last Photo Shoots - Vogue Trailer
"Michael: The Last Photo Shoots" is a fascinating behind the scenes look at Michael Jackson’s last magazine cover photo shoots and the struggle to make them happen. It is a unique story told through the eyes of several of Michael's closest friends, photographers and stylists that had helped Michael prepare for his planned comeback in 2007.
In 2007, after several years of living over-seas in seclusion, Michael returned to the United States wanting to make a comeback onto the music scene. Taking the cover of L’UOMO Vogue for its October 2007 issue was Michael's first step. On September 14, 2007 in New York, Photographer Bruce Weber and Vogue Fashion Editor / Michael Jackson's personal stylist Rushka Bergman captured the magic of the King of Pop for the 25th Anniversary of the release of Thriller.
On September 24, 2007 in Brooklyn, NY, Michael Jackson did an interview and another photo shoot for Ebony Magazine for its December 2007 issue. This was Michael’s first United States interview and magazine story in a decade.
Michael had a love for art and being an artist himself, Michael had said that he had wanted to be photographed in a space “where art lives on forever.” Ebony selected the Brooklyn Museum of Art as the location. While many magazine covers were done throughout Michael's career, the Vogue and Ebony shoots were very important to Michael as these were for his comeback. Through these photos, Michael's image as art lives on forever.
Along with never before seen footage of Michael, "Michael: The Last Photo Shoots" contains engaging interviews with Rushka Bergman (Contributing Fashion Editor of L'Uomo Vogue, Vogue Italia and Michael Jackson's personal stylist), Phillip Bloch (widely considered to be one of Hollywood's premier fashion stylists), Bruce Weber (famed photographer and filmmaker) and Kabuki (legendary make-up artist from Northern England known for his unique flair and artistry with make-up and imagery and one of the most exciting talents in fashion today).
There are captivating interviews with Bryan Monroe (an award winning journalist, CNN Politics editor, team leader of the winner of the Pulitzer Price Gold Medal, former Vice President and Editorial Director of Ebony and Jet Magazines and the journalist who conducted the last major interview with the King of Pop - Michael Jackson), Harriett Cole (Life stylist author, nationally syndicated advice columnist, former Editor in Chief of Ebony Magazine and Creative director for Michael Jackson's last cover photo shoot) and Michael Amir (Executive Assistant and Chief of Staff for Michael Jackson).

China Premier Agricola Medal 2012 News
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday pledged that China will seek the steady growth of agricultural products and enable Chinese farmers to share the achievements of the country s economic development and social progress. Wen was speaking at a ceremony where he was awarded the Agricola Medal of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization by FAO General Director Jose Graziano da Silva at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. I thank Director Jose Graziano da Silva for conferring the medal on me. This is more than a personal honor to me. It represents the international community s full recognition of and high acclamation for what China has achieved in agriculture and rural development Wen said. China s grain output has been increasing for nine consecutive years and this year s output is about 150 million tons more than in 2003 Wen said. This has provided a guarantee for China s economic and social development and the improvement of the people s life. It has also contributed to the global food security. Wen attributed the achievements of China s agricultural and rural development to the rural reform the top priority given to agriculture and the principle of industry supporting agriculture and cities supporting rural areas. The achievements would be impossible without the government commitment to safeguarding farmers rights respecting their aspiration for better life and bringing their initiative into play to boost production and build new rural areas Wen said. China will seek the steady growth of agricultural products and enable Chinese farmers to share the achievements of the country s economic development and social progress Wen said. China would like to work with the international community to promote world agricultural development and food security and improve farmers livelihood. Graziano said that China with 1.3 billion people feeds 21 percent of the world s population with 9 percent of the world s arable land and 6 percent of the world s fresh water. He added that the outputs of many of China s agricultural products rank first in the world. Graziano appreciated the Chinese government s principle of giving top priority to agriculture farmers and rural areas saying he believed China with reform and innovation will embrace a better future. He also hailed China s efforts to carry out South-South cooperation in agricultural field and help other developing countries improve agricultural production. An intergovernmental organization FAO has 191 member nations two associate members and one member organization the European Union. Before the awarding ceremony Wen met with Jose Graziano da Silva at the Great Hall of the People on the same day.
