"Sexy Bitch", also known as "Sexy Chick", is a song by French disc jockey David Guetta recorded for his fourth studio album One Love (2009). The song features vocals from Senegalese-American recording artist Akon. It was released as the second single from One Love internationally. The song was serviced to mainstream and rhythmic crossover radios on September 1, 2009 in the United States, through Astralwerks, together with Capitol Records.

It was written by Giorgio Tuinfort, Aliaune Thiam, David Guetta, Jean-Claude Sindres and Sandy Vee; the latter three also produced the song. The song was made in one night after the two main artists met at a concert. "Sexy Bitch" is an uptempo electro house song that incorporates urban and electronic music elements. The lyrics deal with the protagonist's infatuation with a woman. "Sexy Bitch" garnered generally mixed to positive reviews from music critics, who commended the song's production.

"Sexy Bitch" was written by Giorgio Tuinfort, Aliaune Thiam, David Guetta, Jean-Claude Sindres and Sandy Vee. The production was helmed by Guetta, Sindres and Vee. Guetta, in an interview for MTV News, said the collaboration with Akon came after they met during a performance of "When Love Takes Over" with Kelly Rowland. Akon approached him, asking if they could work together. Guetta suggested that they should start immediately, so they rented a studio in London and made the song in one night.^[1] "Sexy Bitch" was released as the second single from One Love (2009), after the international success of "When Love Takes Over". It was released worldwide as a digital promotional single, which preceded the release One Love, on July 24, 2009.^[2] Astralwerks, together with Capitol Records, solicited the song to mainstream and rhythmic radios on September 1, 2009 in the United States under the name "Sexy Chick".^[3] On September 7, 2009, an extended play was serviced to digital retailers, containing an extended version of the song and two remixes by Chuckie, Lil Jon and Koen Groeneveld.^[4] That same day, a remixes extended play was released featuring remixes by disc jockeys Afrojack, Abel Ramos, and Groeneveld.^[5] On September 13, 2009, an extended play of "Sexy Bitch" was released in the United Kingdom featuring the clean edit and remixes by DJ Footloose, Chuckie, Lil Jon, Abel Ramos, and Groeneveld.^[6]

"Sexy Bitch" is an electro house and dance-pop song that runs for 3 minutes and 14 seconds. The song incorporates styles of several genres, including electronic, pop, dance, and house.^[7] It features interstellar bleeps that combine with an driving, 8-bit style beat.^[8][9] According to the digital music sheet published at Musicnotes.com by Faber Music, the song is written in a key of B minor.^[7] It is set in common time and features a time signature of 130 beats per minute.^[7] Akon's vocals range from a high note of B₃ to a low note of G₅.^[7] The song has a basic sequence of B₅-D₅-G₅-D₅-E₅ as its chord progression.^[7] The lyrics deal with the protagonist's infatuation with a female, demonstrated in lines like "I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful," and "nothing like the neighbourhood whore".^[10] Eric Lyndal Martin of PopMatters commented that the song's lines would serve best in "Take Back the Night" ballads than on electronica songs.^[11]

Critical reception[link]

Michael Menachem of Billboard praised the song, writing "Don't be surprised if this track takes over dancefloors as the summer ends."^[9] Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave "Sexy Bitch" a three star rating, expressing some discontent towards the lyrical content but cited the hook and beats as factors that make the song "bearable".^[10] In the review of One Love for the same publication, David Balls offered a less optimistic view of the song, calling it "a throwaway affair with a sell-by-date to rival a pint of milk."^[12] David Jeffries of Allmusic noted it as one of the album's highlights, writing that "Akon and guilty pleasure lyrics ... make for a perfect match."^[13] Eric Lyndal Martin of PopMatters commented, "the final product makes you wonder just how sexy this bitch actually is," and commended the track for its driving beats, writing that they "make this song a lot of fun."^[11]

Chart performance[link]

"Sexy Bitch" earned Guetta his first top five single in the United States and stands as his second highest charting single there.

"Sexy Bitch" was released as the follow up single to "When Love Takes Over", which was experiencing international success during the time of the single's release. It proved to surpass "When Love Takes Over" in the United States when it debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number fifty-six on the week ending August 15, 2009, becoming Guetta's highest peaking single on the chart at the time. The song reappeared on the Hot 100 following the single's release to mainstream and rhythmic crossover radios. Within months, the song entered the top ten tier, where it ascended and descended until February 13, 2010, when it peaked at number five.^[14][15] "Sexy Bitch" exited the Billboard Hot 100 after forty weeks, earning a double-platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and amassed sales of 2.95 million digital downloads in the United States.^[15][16][17] In Canada, the song debuted on the Canadian Hot 100 at number nine, becoming the week's "highest debut". It fell down the chart up until its fourth week, when it hit number thirty-five.^[15] The song got its "second wind" in its fifth week, rising to number twenty-one, and eventually reached the summit of the chart, where it stalled for two weeks.^[15][18]

"Sexy Bitch" replicated the chart success of the previous single in international territories. In the Australasian countries, it reached the summit of the singles charts in Australia and New Zealand. However, the song was more successful in Australia, where it logged the top position for seven weeks and lasted on the chart for thirty-eight weeks.^[19] The song earned a quintuple-platinum certification by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), denoting shipments of 350,000 copies.^[20] In New Zealand, "Sexy Bitch" lasted three weeks at number one and twenty-three weeks on the chart.^[21] The song shipped 30,000 copies to the country, earning a double platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ).^[22]

"Sexy Bitch" showed similar standings in the European countries, continuing Guetta's mainstream success around the world. The song topped the charts in four countries and reached the top five in nine. In the United Kingdom, it entered the singles chart at number twenty-one on August 21, 2009.^[23] The song rose to number one in the following week and lasted forty weeks on the chart, amassing sales of 610,000 copies in the United Kingdom.^[23][24] "Sexy Bitch" showed the most longevity in Switzerland, where it logged seventy-seven weeks on the singles chart. The song reached a peak of number two, where it stalled for three consecutive weeks in October, 2009. It eventually earned a quadruple-platinum certification by International Federation of the Phonographic Industry Switzerland (IFPI Switzerland), denoting shipments of 80,000 copies.^[25] "Sexy Bitch" experienced a successful chart run in Sweden, entering the singles chart at number eight and after more than two months, reached a peak at number two.^[26] The song lasted fifty five weeks on the chart, twenty-five of which were spent inside the top ten. In Austria, the song reached the summit of the singles chart, where it stayed for three consecutive weeks.^[27]

Music video[link]

The video was directed by Stephen Schuster. The video starts with a plane coming and girls in bikinis are seen tanning and swimming. The camera switches to Akon who wakes up and finds pictures of his date from David Guetta's pool party. He then finds lipstick note on his mirror that reads "find me at pool party" with yet another photo. As the party starts, people enter; a group of teenage boys are not allowed but they employ various methods to get in. The camera switches to Akon again, who is shown singing underwater. The camera flicks to Guetta arriving meeting up with Akon, who then grabs Guetta and they throw each other in the pool. The party continues as Akon pushes more people in, girls dance and Akon with Guetta are shown to be having a water fight. The scene then skips to a club that is called "Fuck Me, I'm Famous" where David Guetta is performing a concert with Tocadisco, and Akon is walking in from the back, where he meets some girls. Akon then arrives and performs "Sexy Bitch" at the concert. A light up man in blue and green appears. Girls are shown dancing and Akon does a crowd surf before the video ends. At the end, Akon is seen sleeping in the bed waking up finding pictures but goes back to sleep.

The video was filmed in Ibiza, Barcelona, Spain, and Swindon, England around July 27, 2009.^[28]

An alternate version for a censored version of the song (Sexy Chick) depicts two girls in Akon's bedroom; one is taking Polaroid photos of the other. They even take photos of themselves in Akon's bed while he sleeps. Akon's bed is covered in photos, and as the girls leave, the one most heavily photographed writes in lipstick on the bathroom mirror, "find me at pool party". She attaches another photo and leaves a lipstick impression of her lips on the mirror before she goes to the pool party. Akon then wakes up. The rest of the video is much like the other version, with a few scenes cut or added at the pool party and the club. For example, the underwater singing scene is omitted.

Pierre David Guetta (7 November 1967), known professionally as David Guetta (French pronunciation: [daˌvid ɡɛˈta]), is a French house music producer and DJ.^[1] Originally a DJ at nightclubs during the 1980s and 1990s, he co-founded Gum Productions and released his first album, Just a Little More Love, in 2002. Later, he released Guetta Blaster (2004) and Pop Life (2007). Biography[link]

1984–2000: Early life and career[link]

At age 17, Guetta began DJing at the Broad Club in Paris.^[5] He first played popular songs, and he discovered house music when he heard a Farley master Funk track on French radio in 1987. The next year, he began hosting his own club nights.^[6] In 1990, he released "Nation Rap", a hip-hop collaboration with French rapper Sidney Duteil.^[7]

In the mid 1990s Guetta played in clubs including Le Centrale, the Rex, Le Boy, and Folies Pigalle.^[5][8] Released in 1994^[7] Guetta's second single, a collaboration with American house vocalist Robert Owens titled "Up & Away", was a minor club hit.^[6] In 1994, David Guetta became the manager of Le Palace nightclub and he continued to organise parties there and in other clubs, such as the "Scream" parties in Les Bains Douches.^[9]

[edit] 2001–2006: Just a Little More Love and Guetta Blaster

In 2001, David Guetta along with Joachim Garraud founded Gum Productions, and in the same year Guetta's first hit single, "Just a Little More Love", featuring American singer Chris Willis was released. Willis was vacationing in France when he met Guetta.^[6] Guetta's debut album Just a Little More Love was released in 2002 on Virgin Records and sold over 300,000 copies. The follow-up singles, ("Love Don't Let Me Go", "People Come People Go" and "Give Me Something"), were released in 2002. Guetta released a compilation, Fuck Me I'm Famous, in 2003, named after his party in Ibiza. It included "Just for One Day (Heroes)", a remix of David Bowie's song "Heroes".^[6] Later in his career, Guetta continued recording compilations under that title.

Guetta's second album, Guetta Blaster, was released in 2004. It released four singles: "Money" and "Stay" featuring Chris Willis and "The World Is Mine" and "In Love With Myself" featuring JD Davis. In 2006 the Just a Little More Love single "Love Don't Let Me Go" was re-released as a mash-up with the Tocadisco remix of "Walking Away" by The Egg. The mash-up single entitled "Love Don't Let Me Go (Walking Away)" was charted higher than the original release of the song.

In 2007, Guetta's third album Pop Life was released. The album was successful in the UK and Ireland as well as in mainland Europe. According to EMI in 2010, the album has sold a total of 530,000 copies worldwide. The lead single "Love Is Gone" reached Number 1 on the American Dance Chart and charted on the Billboard Hot 100.

He played in many countries around the world to promote the album. He played in Mauritius in January 2008, accompanied by French rapper JoeyStarr. In the same year, he and his wife Cathy also planned a new event which took place in the Stade de France on 5 July 2008. The event was called "UNIGHTED", he performed with Tiësto, Carl Cox, Joachim Garraud and Martin Solveig in front of a crowd of 40,000.^[10]

In 2009, he was placed third in the "Top 100 DJs" poll by DJ Magazine,^[11] and was elected "Best House DJ" by DJ Awards in 2008. Since April 2009, Guetta had his own radio show on the internet radio station RauteMusik on Saturday evening. The show was afterwards moved into Radio 538, being aired every Friday evening after Tiësto's Club Life. Its name is DJ Mix. Guetta performs a one-hour set of house music, presenting mainly new talents inside.

David Guetta's fourth studio album, One Love, was released in August 2009. Its first single "When Love Takes Over", which featured Kelly Rowland, peaked at #1 on the UK Singles Chart and topped many other countries worldwide. His second single from the album, "Sexy Bitch" featuring Akon, became his second #1 in the UK. "One Love" featuring Estelle, "Memories" featuring Kid Cudi and "Gettin' Over You" featuring Chris Willis, Fergie and LMFAO followed. As of May 2011 the album had sold three million copies worldwide.^[12] Guetta's fourth studio album One Love was nominated as "Best Electronic/Dance Album" at the 52nd Grammy Awards.^[13] His song "When Love Takes Over" featuring American R&B singer Kelly Rowland received two nominations; Best Dance Recording and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical, and won the latter. After conflicts over whether or not an album re-issue should go ahead, One More Love was released on 29 November 2010. First single, titled "Who's That Chick?" featuring Rihanna was released a few weeks prior.^[14]

On 16 June 2009, The Black Eyed Peas released the David Guetta-produced "I Gotta Feeling" as their second single from their fifth studio album, The E.N.D.. It became a worldwide hit topping the charts in seventeen countries. It became the most downloaded song of all-time in the United States with almost 7.5 million downloads and in the United Kingdom selling more than 1 million copies.^[15][16] He was nominated twice for his work with The Black Eyed Peas at the 52nd Grammy Awards; in the category Record of the Year for "I Gotta Feeling" and Album of the Year for their album The E.N.D.. In 2010, David Guetta co-wrote and produced Kelly Rowland's "Commander" from her third album Here I Am. It peaked at number one on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Songs chart in the United States, and reached top ten positions in Belgium and the United Kingdom. Guetta has also co-produced "Forever and a Day", which was Kelly's next UK single from that album.^[17][18] Guetta also produced the singles "Acapella" and "Scream" for American singer-songwriter Kelis's fifth studio album, Flesh Tone, released on 14 May 2010. "Acapella" was released as the lead single on 23 February 2010 and topped the dance charts in the United Kingdom and United States. On 28 June 2010 American rapper Flo Rida released the single "Club Can't Handle Me" featuring David Guetta. The song is included on the soundtrack album to the American 3D dance film Step Up 3D.

Guetta's fifth studio album, Nothing But the Beat was released on August 30, 2011. It was released as a double-disc album; one disc being vocal and the other being electronic.^[19] The French DJ was inspired by rock bands such as Kings of Leon and Coldplay to add rock influences to his dance productions.^[20] "Where Them Girls At" featuring Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida, the first single off the album, was released worldwide on May 2, 2011.^[21][22] "Little Bad Girl" featuring Ludacris and Taio Cruz, was released as the second single on June 28, 2011.^[19][23] The third single "Without You" featuring Usher was released on September 27, 2011. Guetta also released three promotional singles for Nothing But the Beat, "Titanium" featuring Sia, "Lunar" with Afrojack and "Night of Your Life" featuring Jennifer Hudson. The album also features the hit single "Sweat" with Snoop Dogg.

Guetta is also scheduled to perform alongside Nicky Romero and Nervo at London's Alexandra Palace on June 1, 2012.^[24]

His father was a restaurateur of Moroccan Jewish descent,^[25] and his mother is of Belgian descent.^[26][27][28] He is married to socialite and night club manager Cathy Guetta; they have two children, Tim Elvis Eric (born 2004) and Angie (born 2007).^[29]
