Maritime Girls in the Late 19th-century
www.musee-mccord.qc.ca "Learning, Limits, and Love: Maritime Girls in the Late 19th-century" Janet Guildford, Mount St. Vincent University For girls from prosperous and respectable Maritime families, growing up in the late 19th century meant learning to accept the limitations imposed on women in their society. By the end of the century, opportunities began to open up for them in education, careers and even sports. Nonetheless, those activities remained secondary to the "real" work of getting married and having children. Aussi disponible en français: www.musee-mccord.qc.ca © McCord Museum, 2003

Kyiv Fashion Museum to Feature Vintage 19th Century Clothes
Collector of vintage clothing, Marina Ivanova, plans to create a museum of fashion in Kyiv. And while this idea awaits realization, Marina has presented a part of her collection at the exhibition "Eternity of Romance." Our correspondent tell us more about the unique clothing and accessories of the Nineteenth Century. One can learn about the fashion of the Nineteenth century not only from historical movies and old photos, but also by seeing such clothing firsthand. Kiev designer Marina Ivanova presented her private collection of elegant dresses and ladies accessories that were popular in Europe almost 200 years ago. [Marina Ivanova, Vintage Clothes Collector]: "I'm a slave of this collection. I have to patch, darn, iron, restore." The exhibition displays some of what was gathered by Marina over 30 years. Each dress has its own history and its purpose. [Anna Varavva, NTD Correspondent]: "These dresses of delicate batiste and lace were designed for walking. They were dressed on corsets, which tightened the waist to 50 cm. But what could not be done for the sake of a beauty?" To create a more expressive silhouette women tied a pillow behind, called a bustle. [Oksana Shevchenko, Exhibation Curator]: "In the photos the last century there were women depicted in some reclining poses, not very natural, but very graceful. In fact, they did not take these postures on purpose. They simply could not just sit down properly, because of all these devices, so they had to recline on the ...

Somalia 19th Century Original.wmv
The late 19th century had a huge impact on developments occurring in the Horn of Africa. The European powers (Italy, Great Britain and France) first gained a foothold in Somalia through the signing of various pacts and agreements with the Somali Sultans that then controlled the region, such as Yusuf Ali Kenadid, Boqor Osman Mahamuud and Mohamoud Ali Shire. Italian Somaliland then came under British administration until 1949, when it became a United Nations trusteeship, the Trust Territory of Somalia, under Italian administration. This administration lasted ten years, from 1950 to 1960, with legislative elections held in 1956 and 1959. In 1960, the Trust Territory of Somalia (the former Italian Somaliland) became independent, following in the footsteps of the briefly extant State of Somaliland (the former British Somaliland) which had gained independence five days earlier on June 26, 1960.[3] On July 1, 1960, the two territories united as planned to form the Somali Republic.[23][24] A government was formed by Abdullahi Issa, with Aden Abdullah Osman Daar as President and Abdirashid Ali Shermarke as Prime Minister, later to become President (from 1967--1969). On July 20, 1961 and through a popular referendum, the Somali people ratified a new constitution, which was first drafted in 1960 Sultan Yusuf Ali Kenadid, founder of the Sultanate of Hobyo. In late 1888, Sultan Kenadid entered into a treaty with the Italians, making his Sultanate of Hobyo an Italian protectorate. His ...

Toledo, Spain
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Founded 7th century
Toledo (Latin: Toletum) is a municipality located in central Spain, 70 km south of Madrid. It is the capital of the province of Toledo and of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire and place of coexistence of Christian, Jewish and Moorish cultures. Many famous people and artists were born or lived in Toledo, including Al-Zarqali, Garcilaso de la Vega, Alfonso X and El Greco. It was also the place of important historic events such as the Visigothic Councils of Toledo. As of 2007, the city has a population of 78,618 and an area of 232.1 km² (89.59 square miles).
Toledo once served as the capital city of Visigothic Spain, beginning with Liuvigild (Leovigild), and was the capital until the Moors conquered Iberia in the 8th century. Under the Caliphate of Cordoba, Toledo enjoyed a golden age. This extensive period is known as La Convivencia, i.e. the co-existence of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Under Arab rule, Toledo was called Tulaytulah (Arabic طليطلة, academically transliterated Ṭulayṭulah).
On May 25, 1085 Alfonso VI of Castile took Toledo and established direct personal control over the Moorish city from which he had been exacting tribute, and ending the mediaeval Taifa's Kingdom of Toledo . This was the first concrete step taken by the combined kingdom of Leon-Castile in the Reconquista by Christian forces.
Toledo was famed for its production of iron and especially of swords and the city is still a center for the manufacture of knives and other steel implements. When Philip II moved the royal court from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, the old city went into a slow decline from which it never recovered.
Toledo's Alcázar became renowned in the 19th and 20th centuries as a military academy. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 its garrison was famously besieged by Republican forces.
Arts and culture
Toledo reached its zenith in the era of Islamic Caliphate. Historian P. de Gayangos writes:
The Muslim scientists of this age were not rivaled in the world. Perhaps among their greatest feats were the famous waterlocks of Toledo.[1]
The old city is located on a mountaintop with a 150 degrees view, surrounded on three sides by a bend in the Tagus River, and contains many historical sites, including the Alcázar, the cathedral (the primate church of Spain), and the Zocodover, a central market place.
From the 4th century to the 16th century about thirty synods were held at Toledo. The earliest, directed against Priscillian, assembled in 400. At the synod of 589 the Visigothic King Reccared declared his conversion from Arianism; the synod of 633 decreed uniformity of liturgy throughout the Visigothic kingdom and took stringent measures against baptized Jews who had relapsed into their former faith. The council of 681 assured to the archbishop of Toledo the primacy of Spain.
As nearly one hundred early canons of Toledo found a place in the Decretum Gratiani, they exerted an important influence on the development of ecclesiastical law. The synod of 1565–1566 concerned itself with the execution of the decrees of the Council of Trent; and the last council held at Toledo, 1582–1583, was guided in detail by Philip II.
Toledo was famed for religious tolerance and had large communities of Muslims and Jews until they were expelled from Spain in 1492 (Jews) and 1502 (Muslims). Today's city contains the religious monuments the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, the Synagogue of El Transito, Mosque of Cristo de la Luz and the church of San Sebastián dating from before the expulsion, still maintained in good condition. Among Ladino-speaking Sephardi Jews, in their various diasporas, the family name Toledano is still prevalent - indicating an ancestry traced back to this city (the name is also attested among non-Jews in various Spanish-speaking countries).
In the 13th century, Toledo was a major cultural center under the guidance of Alfonso X, called "El Sabio" ("the Wise") for his love of learning. The program of translations, begun under Archbishop Raymond of Toledo, continued to bring vast stores of knowledge to Europe by rendering great academic and philosophical works in Arabic into Latin. The Palacio de Galiana, built in the Mudéjar style, is one of the monuments that remain from that period.
The Cathedral of Toledo (Catedral de Toledo) was built between 1226-1493 and modeled after the Bourges Cathedral, though it

VITALIC - See The Sea (Red)
Track taken from the Vitalic’s album “Flashmob”.
Built around the cover's picture of Vitalic's album Flashmob, this video clip is an oniric and contemplative journey of a man recreating the 19th century experience of Etienne-Jules Marey on fluid dynamics.
Smoke lines represent the notion of stability, the triangle goes for the disturbance and incidentally for the V of Vitalic. The concept of a flashmob is illustrated here as a result of an intruder perturbating a stable environment.

Alt-J’s debut album ‘An Awesome Wave’ was released at the end of May 2012, crash landing into the Top 20 whilst peaking at #3 on iTunes, making it one of the biggest debuts of the year so far. An amazing feat for a debut album by an indie act with little marketing, it caused a shockwave in the pop and r’n’b dominated charts. The release came with a plethora of amazing reactions that saw it touted as the “hottest debut album” by NME, hailed as “strong, addictive and enthralling’ by the BBC and chosen as album of the week on Radio 1 and album of the day on 6music. The singles have been Record of the Week for Greg James, Huw Stephens and Fearne Cotton. DJs across Radio 1, 6music and Radio 2 are united in their praise of the album. Online the album continues to spread, with over 1million plays on their soundcloud to date.
Earlier this year, French production company COSA, who conceived innovative videos with a different point of view, concocted a unique project to unite a director, artist and contemporary music group to create a provocative music video
The director Guillaume Cagniard, Artistic Director of JR for many years, made the connection between COSA and the Galerie Perrotin, who represents some of the greatest artists of the moment: Sophie Calle, Maurizio Cattelan, Wim Delvoye, Elmgreen & Dragset, JR, KAWS, Takashi Murakami, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Xavier Veilhan...
After the success on their first collaboration with Massive Attack and Galerie Perrotin to create a unique two-minute video, COSA approached the prominent Belgian artist Wim Delvoye to develop their next video project.
Wim Delvoye has developed an art that offers a reinterpretation of artworks of the past while laying down a lucid and amused glance at contemporary society. He explores art history, Gothic cathedrals and sculptures of the 19th century, from Bosch and Brueghel to Warhol, simultaneously revealing the beauty of daily objects. With a Baroque gesture between homage and irreverence, he appropriates and deforms the motifs that inspire him. It was decided that the band who most suited the artistic vision of Wim Delvoye was Alt-J, specifically the song ‘Fitzpleasure’.
The video for ‘Fitzpleasure’ was shot in one day in a studio in Paris. Living artwork performer Tim Steiner, who turned his back into a piece of art after being tattooed by Wim Delvoye, came especially from London to be part of the shoot. After two weeks of post-production, the video has now been delivered.
