Mexico: Thousands of teachers protest after Senate approves education reform
Mexico: Thousands of teachers protest after Senate approves education reform
Around 20,000 teachers gathered and marched the streets of Mexico City Wednesday. The march is part of ongoing protests concerning labour rights and mandatory teacher evaluations that the Senate approved in a vote on Tuesday. Over 200,000 teachers demonstrated across the country. Teachers are concerned about their long-held labour rights as the government has not specified the exact terms of the educational reforms. They speculate that Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's modernisation of the old system is a product of Americanisation. In the long term, they see the country's education going the way of the United States, where schools will be profitable enterprises and educational inequality remains. They demand a cancellation of the reforms and insist on an open and full consultation.
