Ynet is the most popular Israeli news and general content website, which is the online outlet for Yediot Ahronot, the country's secondleading daily newspaper (Israel Hayom is the current leading).^[1] However, all of Ynet's content is original work, published exclusively on the website and written by an independent staff.^[2][3]

Ynet was launched on June 2000 in Hebrew only, but since 2004 operates a short English edition, Ynetnews, which deals mainly with news and commentary. In addition, Ynet hosts the online version of Yedioth Aharanot's media group Magazines: Laisha (which also operates Ynet's fashion section), Pnai Plus, Blazer, GO magazine, and Mentha. For two years, Ynet had also an Arabic version, which ceased to operate in May 2005. Ynet's main competition comes from Walla! and Nana. Since 2008, Ynet is Israel's most popular internet portal, as measured by Google Trends.^[4]

According to Alexa Internet traffic rankings, Ynet is among the top 1000 websites in the world and the top 10 sites in Israel.^[5]

"200 Greatest Israelis" poll (2005)[link]

In 2005, Ynet conducted a poll to determine whom the general public considers the 200 Greatest Israelis of all time.^{[6][7][8][9][10]} Due to the nature of the poll used to select and rank the Israelis, the results do not pretend to be an objective assessment.^[11]

Ninet Tayeb (Hebrew: נינט טייב‎, also known as Ninette or Nina) (born October 21, 1983, in Kiryat Gat, Israel) is an Israeli-pop rock singer and actress who became widely known as the first winner of Kochav Nolad (the Israeli version of Pop Idol).^[1]

She is currently performing after the release of her second album, and stars in the Israeli version of Spring Awakening.^[2]

Early life[link]

Tayeb is of Moroccan Sephardic Jewish descent, the third of five children to her parents. She was raised in Kiryat Gat, where she started to sing in the local youth center.^[3] She was nicknamed Nina by her friends and family.

Kokhav Nolad (Israel Idol)[link]

During her IDF service, Tayeb auditioned for the first season of "Lo Nafsik Lashir – Kokhav Nolad, then a format under development. The Israeli media embraced her as a Cinderella story and named her the star, and she was in the lead all throughout the season.^[4] In the semifinal, she sang a song by Hayehudim, bringing mainstream attention to the veteran band.^[5] In the final, she performed Zohar Argov's classic Mizrahi song "Yam Shel Dma'ot" (A Sea of Tears), and won with almost half of the votes. She is the contestant with the longest-lasting and largest popularity after the show.

She is usually invited to the grand finale of the show every year and introduced as the number one winner of the show.

Acting career[link]

After winning Kokhav Nolad, Teddy productions, the production company behind Kokhav Nolad, created a daily drama to capitalize on Tayeb's popularity. The show, HaShir Shelanu ("Our Song"), was loosely based on Tayeb's life, became a hit and ran through 4 seasons, with Tayeb starring as Ninet Levi for two seasons, and as herself for the remaining two.^[4]

In 2009 the movie "Kirot", a thriller directed by Dani Lerner, was released to theaters with Ninet in the lead as a beaten woman avenging her abusing husband.^[6]

In the summer of 2010 Ninet played the roll of Wendla Bergman on the Hebrew vesion of the rock musical "Spring Awakening" written by Frank Wedekind. Ninet was nominated for the Israeli Theatre Awards for best female actress of 2010.

Three years after winning the Israeli Kokhav Nolad reality show, Tayeb began work on her first album, Barefoot (Yechefa, Hebrew: יחפה). The album was produced by the Israeli rock singer Aviv Geffen,^[3] whom Ninet admired in her teen years; it was mainly composed, written and adapted by him. The album was released on September 7, 2006, and was later certified gold, selling more than 20,000 copies. The cover image was produced by Helicon.

Songs 1–4 (including the first two singles) & 6, 10 & 12- were all written, composed and adapted by Geffen. Song 5, the fourth single, was written by Eli Moreno, composed by Ilay Bottner & adapted by Idan Raichel and Gil'ad Shmu'eli. Song 7 was written and composed by Erez Al'Grebli, and adapted by him and Tomer Mazmer. Song 8, the third single (and first video clip) was written by Tayeb, composed by her and Ilay Bottner, and adapted by Aviv. Song 9 was written by Barak Pheldman, composed and adapted by Yonni Bloch. Tayeb has expressed some unhappiness with the first album, noting that due to microphone issues, her singing quality in it was not good.^[7]

Communicative[link]

On November 17, 2009, Tayeb released her second album, Communicativi (communicative).^[8] Tayeb wrote all the lyrics in the album, composed most of it, and produced and arranged the album with Rockfour. The album was praised by the critics as brave and exciting, mostly for the major shift in Tayeb's image from "the national sweetheart" of Israel to a darker image of a rocker. The album introduces Tayeb's new musical influences from the rock genre such as Jeff Buckley, P.J. Harvey, etc. This album is by far less commercial than her debut and none of the singles that have been released became hits, although Tayeb's status as Israel's most famous person in entertainment remains strong, thus making "Communicativi" one of the most talked about albums of recent years.

In 2004 Tayeb recorded a song called "Like Everybody" with comedian Eli Finish for the charity television broadcast "Yomtov". In 2008 Tayeb took part in the documentary TV series "Once In A Lifetime" for which she flew to Jamaica with musician Ben Artzi, where they recorded a reggae track together with local musicians. In memorial of Ofra Haza she recorded, along with Ivri Lider, a pop rock version of Haza's song "This Pain". The duet became a hit in Israel in 2007.

In the annual musical project "Hebrew Labor" of 2008 (new versions of Israeli classics), she recorded Ilan Virtzberg's song to late poet Yona Wallach lyrics, "I Couldn't Do Anything With This". The song was the first public presentation of "the new Ninet", as it introduced an alternative rock direction in Tayeb's career.

Tayeb took part in the annual children's song contest Festigal as a guest performer (not performing on Saturdays due to religious reasons) in 2004. In 2006 she participated in the children's production Shir Nolad – a cover versions competition of classical children's songs, which she won with a cover version of the classic "Mother". It was during that time when she met future life partner Yehuda Levi. She competed in the renewed Children's Song Festival in 2008 with the song "Layla" (Nighty Night) which she wrote and composed herself. The song featured, once again, alternative influences in the melody and her singing.

Tayeb was invited to perform in tribute concerts for Meir Ariel, Inbal Perlmutter, Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley. The latter is the object of Tayeb's admiration. After meeting with Buckley's guitarist and song writer Gary Lucas, Lucas invited Tayeb to record a song which he co-wrote with Buckley but was never recorded.

In 2009 she performed in the renewed Arad Festival. It was the first time Tayeb performed her new material to a large audience. The reaction was unpleasant: Tayeb was booed off stage and refused an encore, which not much to anyone's surprise caused a bit of a media frenzy. Weeks later in a television interview about the Arad incident she stated: "It was painful, but it's the audience's prerogative".

Tayeb recorded the Hebrew soundtrack for the movie Mary Poppins. She was chosen by Walt Disney Company to record the Hebrew soundtrack for the movie The Princess And The Frog.

In 2010 Tayeb was chosen for the role of Wendla in Israeli production of the musical Spring Awakening at "Beit Lessin" Theatre.

Tayeb is the host of Israel Radio's 88 FM station "Pando Najena" show. She is currently working on two albums, one in English and one in Hebrew, with Rockfour.^[7]

Personal life[link]

Tayeb began dating her Hashir Shelanu co-star (and on screen lover) Ran Danker in 2004.^[10] Their on screen and off screen romance was the source of unprecedented media and public interest. Soon after their break up in early 2006, rumors arose speculating that their break up was the result of an affair between Tayeb and actor Yehuda Levi, the boyfriend of Hashir Shelanu co-star Efrat Boimvald. The two supposedly met while working on the children show production Shir Nolad in 2006. Although Levi ended his relationship with Boimvald after 7 years, Tayeb and Levi denied the rumors. They were spotted together on several occasions and after five months, Tayeb confirmed the new romance in an interview, stating that the two were in love. In 2009, Levi confessed in an interview that their romance began while they were both dating other people. Tayeb and Levi now live together in Tel Aviv.

David "Ziggy" Marley (born 17 October 1968, Trenchtown, Jamaica) is a Jamaican musician and leader of the band Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. He is the oldest son of famed reggae musician Bob Marley. His father gave him the nickname "Ziggy"; he has stated that it means "a small joint".

Musical career[link]

In 1979, Ziggy and his siblings, Cedella, Stephen and Sharon made their recording debut with their father, "Children Playing in the Streets". The Melody Makers, as the group came to be known, played occasionally for several years, including at their father's funeral in 1981. Their debut LP was Play the Game Right, which was a very pop-oriented album, earning Ziggy some derision from critics. The band's label, EMI, wanted to market Ziggy as a solo act, and so the Melody Makers moved to Virgin Records, where they recorded Conscious Party (1988, produced by Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth). The album was critically and popularly successful, as was One Bright Day (1989) and Jahmekya (1991).

As the 1990s continued, the Melody Makers' sales slowly declined, beginning with Joy and Blues (1993) and continuing with Free Like We Want 2 B (1995).

Ziggy became politically active, working with the United Nations and creating a record label called Ghetto Youths Crew. A solo album, Dragonfly was released on 15 April 2003. On 2 July 2006, his second solo album, Love Is My Religion, was released on his independent record company Tuff Gong Worldwide. This album won a Grammy for best Reggae album and this was Ziggy's 4th Grammy win. On 5 May 2009, his third solo children's album Family Time, was released on his independent record company Tuff Gong Worldwide. Family Time features Family and Friends, Rita Marley, Cedella Marley, Judah Marley, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson, Jack Johnson, Toots Hibbert, Laurie Berkner, Elizabeth Mitchell and more. This album won a Grammy for "Best Musical Album for Children".

Some of his most popular singles include "True To Myself", "Drive", "People Get Ready", and his hit single "Tomorrow People", which reached #39 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In April 2011, Marley announced his fourth album, entitled Wild and Free would be released on 14 June. The title track, featuring Woody Harrelson, is available for free with the pre-order of Ziggy's first comic book, "Marijuanaman."

Ziggy Marley is the oldest son of Bob Marley. He is married to Orly Marley, who is a former vice-president of William Morris Agency. He also has 6 children, Daniel Marley, Justice Marley, Zuri Marley, Judah Victoria, Gideon Robert Nesta, and Abraham Selassie Robert Nesta. Most of the family resides in Miami.

Philanthropy[link]

• Ziggy Marley founded Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment (URGE), which works to help children (especially in Jamaica and Ethiopia).

• In 2007, Marley signed on as an official supporter of Little Kids Rock, a nonprofit organization that provides free musical instruments and free lessons to children in public schools throughout the United States. He has visited with children in the program and sits on the organization's board of directors as an honorary member.

In 1991, Marley and the Melody Makers contributed the song "Give A Little Love" to the Disney album, For Our Children. The album is a collection of kid-friendly songs by popular artists (e.g. Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Elton John), with proceeds given to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

Marley made guest appearances as himself on an episode of the sitcom Family Matters in 1995, and on the television series Charmed in season 6 (episode 14, "The Legend of Sleepy Halliwell"), performing "Rainbow in the Sky".

He and his Melody Makers made a guest appearance on the popular kids television show Sesame Street in the 1991-92 season, and sang a Sesame Street version of "Small People" from their 1991 album Jahmekya

In 1996, Marley and the Melody Makers recorded the reggae-style theme song for the children's television series Arthur called "Believe in Yourself".

He voiced Ernie, one of Sykes' (Martin Scorsese) Rasta jellyfish henchmen in the 2004 film Shark Tale. In the film when Oscar (Will Smith) tries to sing the Bob Marley song "Three Little Birds", Marley's character zaps Oscar on the head and says "That's not the way you sing that song, mon." The title song for the film was a cover version of "Three Little Birds" performed by Marley and Sean Paul.

Further voice acting includes "Crockadle" on an episode of My Gym Partner's a Monkey, the Cheshire Cat in a 2010 episode of Wonder Pets, and Reflux the Knaaren, in the Ubisoft video game Rayman 3.

Marley covered "Drive" by The Cars for the Adam Sandler movie 50 First Dates, and his father's song "Three Little Birds" for the Dora The Explorer soundtrack.

Ziggy is listed as the featured artist on Donna Summer's song, "Crayons," the title track from her 2008 album. He has also performed duets with Angelique Kidjo, Sting, Dora The Explorer, Taj Mahal, The Chieftains, Sean Paul and others.

Marley and his daughter Judah made an appearance in the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Ziggy Marley released a pro-marijuana song in support of California's Proposition 19 ballot initiative to legalize recreational marijuana. Voters rejected the ballot but backers said they would mount another legalization campaign in 2012.

In popular culture[link]

On an episode of Celebrity Deathmatch, Ziggy was mentioned while his father, Bob Marley (who was brought back to life via time machine), had his hands full with Shaggy. Shaggy first implies that Ziggy was merely a Bob impersonator ("Me? What about Ziggy? He sings all your songs - he even looks like you!"), while Bob answers that Ziggy is his son. Shaggy taunts Bob on how Ziggy might have got his name, on which Bob fight backs with comments on Scooby-Doo, where Shaggy got his nickname.

His song "Love Power" was played during the end credits of Muppet Treasure Island (1996), and "True To Myself" was featured on the TV show Scrubs (Season 8 Episode 14 - "My Soul On Fire", Pt. 1).

In the episode of South Park entitled Medicinal Fried Chicken, Randy Marsh wants to get a prescription for medicinal marijuana before the Ziggy Marley concert in Denver.

He is mentioned in holding a concert in Nevada in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
