Memorial

A memorial is an object which serves as a focus for memory of something, usually a person (who has died) or an event. Popular forms of memorials include landmark objects or art objects such as sculptures, statues or fountains, and even entire parks.

Types

The most common type of memorial is the gravestone or the memorial plaque. Also common are war memorials commemorating those who have died in wars. Memorials in the form of a cross are called intending crosses.

Online memorials and tributes are becoming increasingly popular especially with the increase in natural burial where the laying of gravestones, or memorial plaques, is often not permitted.

When somebody has died, the family may request that a memorial gift (usually money) be given to a designated charity, or that a tree be planted in memory of the person.

Sometimes, when a high school student has died, the memorials are placed in the form of a scholarship, to be awarded to high-achieving students in future years.

The Memorial is a 1932 English novel by author Christopher Isherwood. The novel tells the story of an English family's disintegration in the days following World War I. Isherwood's second published novel, this is the first of his works for which he adapted his own life experiences into his fiction.

The Memorials is an American hard rock band from Berkeley, California that formed in December 2009. As of 2012, the line-up consists of Thomas Pridgen, Viveca Hawkins, and Nick Brewer.

History

Founded in December 2009, The Memorials is a project spearheaded by Thomas Pridgen. After departing The Mars Volta, Pridgen turned his attention to forming his own group, which would incorporate a range of styles as diverse as the experiences of the band members. He contacted friends Viveca Hawkins and Nick Brewer, who were former students at Berklee College of Music, and asked them to establish a new band with him. Brewer and Hawkins met for the first time, after Brewer arrived in San Francisco, just a day shy of recording their first album.

The Memorials' self-titled debut album The Memorials was recorded at the Petting Zoo Recording Studio (The Zoo) in North Oakland, California, as well as at Pridgen's home studio between December 14, 2009 and February 3, 2010. It was released on February 14, 2011. To support their album in 2011, the band went on a 31-date nationwide tour largely backed by fans.
