Gregory Bestor "Greg" Craig (born March 4, 1945) is a Washington-based lawyer and former White House Counsel under President Barack Obama. He has represented numerous high-profile clients, including John W. Hinckley, Jr., who was acquitted of the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan by reason of insanity, and, in 2010, Goldman Sachs. As assistant to the President and special counsel in the White House of President Bill Clinton, Craig directed the team defending Clinton against impeachment. He was a foreign policy advisor to Senator Edward Kennedy and to Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

Early years and legal career

Craig was born in Norfolk, Virginia, the son of William G. Craig, a university educator, former associate dean of students at Stanford University, president of several universities and colleges, and first Director of Training for the Peace Corps, who died in 2005. Greg Craig's mother, Lois, was attentive to four boys, two of whom had learning disabilities; she worked with them endlessly; one is now a teacher and the other is a medical doctor. Lois also owned a bookstore in the Craigs' hometown of Middlebury, Vermont.

Greg Craig went to Philips Exeter Academy, then graduated in the class of 1967 of Harvard (where he sang in the ''a cappella'' group the Harvard Krokodiloes). While an undergraduate, Greg gave leadership to and was a major fundraiser for Harlem Prep, organized to create academic opportunities at the highest level. During this time Greg also traveled to South Africa with Allard K. Lowenstein, to declare common cause with those seeking an end to racist policies. Greg and Al Lowenstein, joined by Bill Clinton and others, were instrumental in beginning the student opposition to the war in Vietnam. Lowenstein said at that time: "Either Bill or Greg could some day be President of the United States." Following Harvard Craig won the Lionel de Jersey Harvard Scholarship to Emmanuel College at Cambridge University. He received his J.D. in 1972 from Yale Law School, where he met Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham.

Craig's first employment following law school was with the Washington-based law firm Williams & Connolly, and he was a partner with the firm before becoming President Obama's counsel. His previous year's income, in a 2009 report, was a salary of $1.7 million from the firm, where he was reported to have been a partner since 1999.

Private clients

Craig has represented numerous high-profile clients. In 1981, he was a member of the team that represented John W. Hinckley, Jr., who tried to assassinate Ronald Reagan, helping put together an insanity defense that led to Hinckley's acquittal.

Craig represented Senator Ted Kennedy during the 1991 rape trial of William Kennedy Smith. (The Senator himself faced no charges in this trial.)

He represented the Cuban father of Elián González during the 2000 child custody dispute which ended when U.S. Marshals enforced court orders that the child be moved from the Florida home of relatives, where they had influenced the child to make a number of videos lashing out at his father. The courts ultimately supported the father's contention that the child should be returned to his custody.

Craig represented United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan during the Volker Commission's investigations in 2004 into the scandals involving the oil-for-food programme.

Recently, he represented Pedro Miguel González Pinzón, a Panamanian legislator wanted in the US for the murder in 1992 of a US soldier, and the attempted murder of another. The ''Dallas Morning News'' called on Senator Obama to ask Craig to choose between the campaign and involvement in the case. Craig had earlier represented the Panamá government during the trial in 1990 of the former president, General Manuel Noriega and had sought the return to Panamá's treasury of funds stolen by Noriega.

In June 2008, the U.S. Department of Justice granted asylum to two of Craig's clients, former Bolivian President Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada and former Minister of Defense Carlos Sánchez Berzaín. The two Bolivians were being accused of "genocide" (along with, among others, Evo Morales and Felipe Quispe) in Bolivia after approximately 60 policemen, soldiers and protesters died in violent clashes in El Alto, Warizata and Sorata in 2003.

In 1977, he represented the first FBI agent ever to be indicted, John J. Kearney, who was accused of illegal wiretapping, breaking and entering, and mail opening in connection with the FBI investigation of the Weatherman. That same year, working with Edward Bennett Williams, Mr. Craig represented the former CIA Director, Richard Helms, who was under grand jury investigation for alleged perjury in his 1973 testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, concerning the 1973 Chilean coup d'état, and the role the United States played in it.

In 1983 to 1984, working with Edward Bennett Williams, Mr. Craig represented Victor Posner, who was charged with tax evasion in federal court in Miami.

Public service

Craig served as Senator Edward Kennedy’s Senior Advisor on Defense, Foreign Policy and National Security issues for five years (1984–88).

In 1997 Secretary of State Madeleine Albright made Craig one of her senior advisors, and he served as Director of Policy Planning from 1997–98. In late 1997 he was appointed as a special coordinator to focus attention on China's suppression of Tibet's cultural and religious traditions.

In September 1998 President Clinton appointed Craig as Assistant to the President and Special Counsel in the White House, where he directed the President’s team defending against impeachment. He was also a member of the President’s trial team in the United States Senate.

In the Obama presidential campaign

Because of his close ties to the Clintons, when Craig declared his support of Senator Barack Obama's presidential ambitions in March 2007, it attracted widespread attention.

FISA controversy

As a spokesman for the Obama campaign, Craig dealt with the senator's reversal of an earlier commitment to filibuster the FISA Amendments Act of 2008. Craig's explanation of the apparent turn-around included a statement that Obama had "concluded that with FISA expiring, it was better to get a compromise than let the law expire." This drew the criticism that Obama and/or his legal advisors had mistakenly supposed that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act was due to expire in the first place.

Debate prep

In 2008, Craig played the part of John McCain to help prepare Barack Obama for his first debate against the Republican nominee. He had played a similar role, "playing" President George W. Bush in mock debates to coach Democratic nominee John Kerry for his three general election match-ups against the incumbent in 2004.

In the Obama administration

In its November 2008 issue, the American Bar Association's monthly magazine, ''ABA Journal'', predicted that Craig would be named Secretary of State in an Obama administration. However, Craig was ultimately appointed as White House Counsel in the administration.

In the first year of the Obama administration, Craig was prominent in handling several issues—taking the first step toward fulfilling the campaign pledge to close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp; the search that produced the Supreme Court nomination of Justice Sonia Sotomayor; revising interrogation and detention policies; the release of Department of Justice memos on harsh interrogations; and "he was at the center of the White House decision to reverse itself and withhold photographs of detainee abuse." Criticism of the administration's handling of some of these issues has reportedly resulted, by October, 2009, in a certain questioning of Craig's ability to continue as counsel. While he said he intended to stay, others said he'd be gone by the end of the year. He was replaced by Robert Bauer. CNN cites that he was forced out because of his role in advising Obama to close Guantanamo Bay by January 2010, a task that cannot be achieved.

In his resignation letter he said he would serve until 3 January 2010.

Private practice after the White House

Craig is currently a partner in the Washington, DC office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP, one of the largest law firms in the United States.

In April, 2010, it was reported that Craig was engaged to advise financial giant Goldman Sachs on litigation strategy before the Securities and Exchange Commission filed its civil suit. Skadden is a long-time lawyer to Goldman. Concern that a recent Obama Administration member would lobby on behalf of such a high-profile object of both regulatory and legislative attention was expressed and deflected. Though there is a two-year Administration ban to avoid revolving door concerns, Craig said "I am a lawyer, not a lobbyist," and legal representation is not covered by the ban.

Craig has also been retained by former Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidate John Edwards in his federal case that alleges Edwards illegally used campaign funds to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter.

Personal life

Craig is married to Derry Noyes, a graphic designer who has designed several postage stamps for the United States Postal Service. They have five children: Will, Eliza (Ziza), Margaret (Maggie), Mary, and James.

Steven Craig Clemons (born 1962) is an American blogger. He is the publisher of the popular political blog, ''The Washington Note'', and a former staff member of Senator Jeff Bingaman. Clemons is also Director of the American Strategy Program at the New America Foundation where he previously served as Executive Vice President, and the former director of the Japan Policy Research Institute. He characterizes himself as a "progressive realist".

He was appointed as Washington editor-a-large of ''The Atlantic'' and editor-in-chief of AtlanticLIVE, the magazine's live events series, in June 2011.

Background

Clemons is the former executive vice president of Economic Strategy Institute, former executive director of the Nixon Center for Peace and Freedom, and served as Senator Jeff Bingaman's Senior Policy Advisor on Economic and International Affairs. He has also served on the advisory board to the Center for U.S.-Japan Relations at the RAND Corporation. Earlier in his career, Clemons was the executive director of the Japan America Society of Southern California from 1987 to 1994.

In 1993, Clemons was the technical advisor for the film ''Rising Sun'', which starred Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes. Clemons also had a role as a talk show host. He also had a role in the film State of Play, starring Ben Affleck.

Clemons also serves on the Board of Advisors of the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland and the Clarke Center at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Blogging

Clemons is perhaps best known for his blog ''The Washington Note'', a blog that focuses on foreign policy issues, as well as general US policy debates. His articles have appeared in blogs such as The Huffington Post, and Daily Kos, as well as major publications around the country.

Clemons at one time called former senior fellow of the Cato Institute, Doug Bandow, a "friend". Bandow wrote a piece supporting the confirmation of US ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, who Clemons strongly opposes, for Clemons' blog. After it was revealed that Bandow had taken payments from former super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff in exchange for writing articles favorable to Abramoff's clients, Clemons wrote a piece on Bandow, and the corruption of think tanks in Washington. (When evidence emerged that Bandow had a relationship with Abramoff, he was fired by Copley, his employer, and Cato and other think tanks severed their relations with him.)

Eva Jefferson Paterson is the president and founder of the Equal Justice Society, a national organization dedicated to changing the law through progressive legal theory, public policy and practice.

Biography

Early life and education

Eva Paterson grew up in a military family. She completed her undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, where she was the school's first African American student-government president. Paterson graduated from UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law and was admitted to the California State Bar in 1975.

Career

Paterson worked for the Legal Aid Society of Alameda County after graduating from law school. She then worked at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights for 23 years, and served as its Executive Director for 13 years before founding the Equal Justice Society.

Spiro Theodore Agnew (, Spiros Theódoros Agkniou) (; November 9, 1918September 17, 1996) was the 39th Vice President of the United States (1969-1973), serving under President Richard Nixon, and the 55th Governor of Maryland (1967-1969). He was also the first Greek American to hold these offices.

During his fifth year as Vice President, in the late summer of 1973, Agnew was under investigation by the United States Attorney's office in Baltimore, Maryland, on charges of extortion, tax fraud, bribery and conspiracy. In October, he was formally charged with having accepted bribes totaling more than $100,000, while holding office as Baltimore County Executive, Governor of Maryland, and Vice President of the United States. On October 10, 1973, Agnew was allowed to plead no contest to a single charge that he had failed to report $29,500 of income received in 1967, with the condition that he resign the office of Vice President.

Agnew is the only Vice President in United States history to resign because of criminal charges. Ten years after leaving office, in January 1983, Agnew paid the state of Maryland nearly $270,000 as a result of a civil suit that stemmed from the bribery allegations.

Early life

Spiro Agnew was born in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents were Theodore Spiros Agnew, a Greek immigrant who shortened his name from Anagnostopoulos (Αναγνωστόπουλος) when he moved to the United States, and Margaret (Carter) Akers, a native of Virginia. Mrs. Akers was a widow, with two children from her first marriage, when she married Mr. Agnew.

Agnew attended Forest Park Senior High School in Baltimore, before enrolling in the Johns Hopkins University in 1937. He studied chemistry at Hopkins for three years.

Agnew was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and was commissioned an officer on May 25, 1942 upon graduation from Army Officer Candidate School. He served with the 10th Armored Division in Europe during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service in France and Germany.

Before leaving for Europe, Agnew worked at an insurance company where he met Elinor Judefind, known as Judy. Agnew married her on May 27, 1942. They had four children: Pamela, James Rand, Susan and Kimberly.

Upon his return from the war, Agnew transferred to the evening program at the University of Baltimore School of Law. He studied law at night, while working as a grocer and as an insurance salesman. In 1947, Agnew received his LL.B. (later amended to Juris Doctor) and moved to the suburbs to begin practicing law. He passed the Maryland bar exam in June 1949.

During the Korean War, he was recalled to service with the Army for one year.

Early political career

Agnew, a Democrat from early youth, switched parties and became a Republican. During the 1950s, he aided U.S. Congressman James Devereux in four successive winning election bids. In 1957, he was appointed to the Baltimore County Board of Zoning Appeals by Democratic Baltimore County Executive Michael J. Birmingham. In 1960, he made his first elective run for office as a candidate for Judge of the Circuit court, finishing last in a five-person contest. The following year, the new Democratic Baltimore County Executive, Christian H. Kahl, dropped him from the Zoning Board, with Agnew loudly protesting, thereby gaining name recognition.

Agnew ran for election as Baltimore County Executive in 1962, seeking office in a predominantly Democratic county that had seen no Republican elected to that position in the twentieth century, with only one (Roger B. Hayden) earning victory after he left. Running as a reformer and Republican outsider, he took advantage of a bitter split in the Democratic Party and was elected. Agnew backed and signed an ordinance outlawing discrimination in some public accommodations, among the first laws of this kind in the United States.

Governor of Maryland

Agnew ran for the position of Governor of Maryland in 1966. In this overwhelmingly Democratic state, he was elected after the Democratic nominee, George P. Mahoney, a Baltimore paving contractor and perennial candidate running on an anti-integration platform, narrowly won the Democratic gubernatorial primary out of a crowded slate of eight candidates, trumping early favorite Carlton R. Sickles. Coming on the heels of the recently passed federal Fair Housing Act of 1965, Mahoney's campaign embraced the slogan "your home is your castle". Many Democrats opposed to segregation then crossed party lines to give Agnew the governorship by 82,000 votes.

As governor, Agnew worked with the Democratic legislature to pass tax and judicial reforms, as well as tough anti-pollution laws. Projecting an image of racial moderation, Agnew signed the state's first open-housing laws and succeeded in getting the repeal of an anti-miscegenation law. However, during the riots that followed the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., in the spring of 1968, Agnew angered many African American leaders when he stated in reference to their constituents, "I call on you to publicly repudiate all black racists. This, so far, you have been unwilling to do."

Vice Presidency

Agnew's moderate image, immigrant background, and success in a traditionally Democratic state made him an attractive running mate for the 1968 Republican presidential nominee, former Vice President Richard Nixon. In line with what would later be called Nixon's "Southern Strategy", Agnew was selected as a candidate because he was sufficiently from the South to attract Southern moderate voters, yet was not identified with the Deep South, which might have turned off Northern centrists come election time.

As late as early 1968, Agnew was a strong supporter of Nelson Rockefeller, one of Nixon's opponents, but by June had switched to supporting Nixon. At the 1968 Republican National Convention, Agnew's nomination was supported by many conservatives within the Republican Party, and by Nixon himself. However, a small band of delegates started shouting "Spiro Who?" and tried to place George W. Romney's name in nomination. In the end, Nixon's wishes prevailed, with Agnew receiving 1119 out of the 1317 votes cast.

During the ensuing general election campaign against Vice President Hubert Humphrey—which took place against a backdrop of urban riots and anti-Vietnam War demonstrations, culminating in the violent confrontations at the Democratic convention in Chicago—Agnew repeatedly hammered the Democrats on the issue of "law and order". Although considered something of a political joke at first—one Democratic television commercial featured hearty laughter as the camera panned to a TV with the words "Vice President Spiro Agnew?" on the screen—Agnew had the last laugh, as the Republican ticket carried 32 of the 50 states.

Agnew went from his first election as County Executive to Vice President in six years—one of the fastest rises in U.S. political history, comparable with that of Nixon himself who became Vice President after four years in the House of Representatives and two years in the Senate. Agnew's Vice Presidency was also the highest-ranking United States political office ever reached by either a Greek American citizen or a Marylander. Agnew soon found his role as the voice of the so-called "silent majority", and by late 1969 he was ranking high on national "Most Admired Men" polls. He also inspired a fashion craze when one entrepreneur introduced Spiro Agnew watches (a take off on the popular Mickey Mouse watch); conservatives wore them to show their support for Agnew, while many liberals wore them to signify their contempt.

Agnew was known for his scathing criticisms of political opponents, especially journalists and anti-war activists. He attacked his adversaries with relish, hurling unusual, often alliterative epithets—some of which were coined by White House speechwriters William Safire and Pat Buchanan—including "pusillanimous pussyfooters", "nattering nabobs of negativism" (written by Safire), and "hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history". He once described a group of opponents as "an effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as intellectuals."

Agnew was often characterized as Nixon's "hatchet man" when defending the administration on the Vietnam War. Agnew was chosen to make several powerful speeches in which he spoke out against anti-war protesters and media portrayal of the Vietnam War, labeling them "Un-American". He did however speak out publicly against the actions of the Ohio National Guard that led to the Kent State shootings in 1970, even describing their action as "murder". Agnew toned down his rhetoric and dropped most of the alliterations after the 1972 election, with a view to running for president himself in 1976.

However, despite his continued loyalty to the Administration, relations between Nixon and Agnew deteriorated, almost from the start of their professional relationship. Although Nixon initially liked and respected Agnew, as time went on he felt his vice president lacked the intelligence or vision, particularly in foreign affairs, to sit in the Oval Office, and he began freezing Agnew out of the White House decision-making process. By some accounts, the notoriously thin-skinned President was also resentful that the self-confident Agnew was so popular with so many Americans. By 1970, Agnew was limited to seeing the president only during cabinet meetings or in the occasional and brief one-on-one, with Agnew given no opportunity to discuss much of anything of substance.

Oval Office tapes reveal that in 1971, Nixon and his chief of staff, Bob Haldeman, discussed their desire to have Agnew resign from office prior to the following year's campaign season. One plan to achieve this was to try to persuade conservative investors to purchase one of the television networks, and then invite Agnew to run it. Another was to see if Bob Hope would be willing to take Agnew on as his partner in his cable television investments. These and other plans never went beyond the talking stages.

Nixon would have liked to replace Agnew on the Republican ticket in 1972 with John Connally, his chosen successor for '76, but he realized that Agnew's large conservative base of supporters would be in an uproar, so he reluctantly kept him as his running mate. When John Ehrlichman, the President's counsel and assistant, asked Nixon why he kept Agnew on the ticket in the 1972 election, Nixon replied that "No assassin in his right mind would kill me" because they would get Agnew (as President). The eventual Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate, Sargent Shriver, was also a Marylander.

Agnew came to enjoy the privileges that being vice president brought to him, particularly access to the rich and famous. He became close friends with Frank Sinatra, Billy Graham and Bob Hope, and consorted with leaders around the globe. He also took in stride his own newfound fame, as his utterances often made newspaper front pages and were major stories on the evening network news broadcasts. Invitations for Agnew to give speeches across the country flooded into his office, and he became a top fundraiser for the Republican Party.

In April 1973, when relevations about Watergate began to surface, Agnew was the choice of 35 percent of Republican voters to be the next Republican nominee for President, while then-California Governor Ronald Reagan was second on the Gallup Poll.

===Resignation=== On October 10, 1973, Spiro Agnew became the second Vice President to resign the office. Unlike John C. Calhoun, who resigned to take a seat in the Senate, Agnew resigned and then pleaded no contest to criminal charges of tax evasion, part of a negotiated resolution to a scheme wherein he was accused of accepting $29,500 in bribes during his tenure as governor of Maryland. Agnew was fined $10,000 and put on three years' probation. The $10,000 fine only covered the taxes and interest due on what was "unreported income" from 1967. The plea bargain was later mocked by former Maryland Attorney General Stephen Sachs as "the greatest deal since the Lord spared Isaac on the mountaintop". Students of Professor John F. Banzhaf III from the George Washington University Law School, collectively known as Banzhaf's Bandits, found four residents of the state of Maryland willing to put their names on a case and sought to have Agnew repay the state $268,482—the amount it was said he had taken in bribes. After two appeals by Agnew, he finally resigned himself to the matter and a check for $268,482 was turned over to Maryland State Treasurer William James in early 1983.

As a result of his no contest plea, Agnew was later disbarred by the State of Maryland, calling him "morally obtuse". As in most jurisdictions, Maryland lawyers are automatically disbarred after being convicted of a felony, and a no contest plea exposes the defendant to the same penalties as a guilty plea.

His resignation triggered the first use of the 25th Amendment, as the vacancy prompted the appointment and confirmation of Gerald Ford, the House Minority Leader, as his successor. It remains one of only two times that the amendment has been employed to fill a Vice Presidential vacancy. The second time was when Ford, after becoming President upon Nixon's resignation, chose Nelson Rockefeller (originally Agnew's mentor in the moderate wing of the Republican Party) to succeed him as Vice President. Had Agnew remained as Vice President when Nixon resigned in 1974, Agnew himself would have become the 38th President, as well as a strong candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 1976, both of which instead went to Ford.

Agnew's official portrait was removed ''Damnatio memoriae'' from the Maryland State House Governor's Reception Room from 1979 until 1995. Then-Governor Parris Glendening stated that in re-including Agnew's portrait that it was not up to anyone to alter history, whether for good or bad, citing ''Nineteen Eighty-Four''.

Later life

After leaving politics, Agnew became an international trade executive with homes in Rancho Mirage, California; Arnold, Maryland; Bowie, Maryland; and near Ocean City, Maryland. In 1976, he briefly reentered the public spotlight and engendered controversy with anti-Zionist statements that called for the United States to withdraw its support for the state of Israel, citing Israel's allegedly bad treatment of Christians, as well as what Gerald Ford publicly criticized as "unsavory remarks about Jews."

In 1980, Agnew published a memoir in which he implied that Nixon and his Chief of Staff, Alexander Haig, had planned to assassinate him if he refused to resign the Vice Presidency, and that Haig told him to "go quietly…or else", the memoir's title. Agnew also wrote a novel, ''The Canfield Decision'', about a Vice President who was "destroyed by his own ambition."

Agnew always maintained that the tax evasion and bribery charges was an attempt by Nixon to divert attention away from the growing Watergate scandal. For the rest of their lives, Agnew and Nixon never spoke to each other again. As a gesture of reconciliation, Nixon's daughters invited Agnew to attend Nixon's funeral in 1994, and Agnew complied. In 1996, when Agnew died, Nixon's daughters returned the favor and attended Agnew's funeral.

Agnew died suddenly on September 17, 1996, aged 77 at Atlantic General Hospital, in Berlin, Maryland, in Worcester County (near his Ocean City home), only a few hours after being hospitalized and diagnosed with an advanced, yet to that point undetected, form of leukemia. Agnew is buried at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, a cemetery in Lutherville-Timonium, Maryland, in Baltimore County in the Garden of the Last Supper section of the cemetery, north of Padonia Road, and to the west side of the main entrance to the cemetery property. His marker makes no reference to his attaining of elective office, a rarity among those who have held the office of Vice President.

Sir David Paradine Frost, OBE (born 7 April 1939) is a British journalist, comedian, writer and media personality, best known for his serious interviews with various political figures, the most notable being Richard Nixon. Since 2006, he has been hosting the weekly programme ''Frost Over the World'' on Al Jazeera English.

Early life

David Paradine Frost was born at Tenterden, Kent, on 7 April 1939 the son of a Methodist minister of Huguenot descent, the Rev. W.J. Paradine Frost. While living in Gillingham, Kent, he was taught in the Bible Class of the Sunday School at his father's church (Byron Road Methodist) by David Gilmore Harvey, and subsequently started training as a Methodist Local Preacher, which he did not complete. He attended Barnsole Road Primary School in Gillingham, then Gillingham Grammar School and finally Wellingborough Grammar School. He subsequently won a place at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a degree in English. He had turned down a contract with Nottingham Forest Football Club to attend university.

At Cambridge, he edited a student newspaper, ''Varsity,'' and a literary magazine, ''Granta.'' He was also secretary of the famous Footlights Drama Society, which included actors such as Peter Cook and John Bird.

After leaving university, he became a trainee at Associated-Rediffusion and worked for Anglia Television.

''That Was the Week That Was'' (''TW3'')

Frost was chosen by writer and producer Ned Sherrin to host a pioneering satirical programme called ''That Was The Week That Was,'' alias ''TW3.'' This caught the wave of the satire boom in 1960s Britain and became a popular programme. ''TW3'' was the last piece of scheduled programming broadcast by the BBC on a Saturday, and regularly overran its time slot.

After a pilot episode on 10 November 1963, a 30-minute American version of ''TW3'' featuring Frost ran on NBC from 10 January 1964 to May 1965. In 1985, David Frost produced and hosted a television special in the same format, ''That Was the Year That Was,'' on NBC.

After ''TW3''

Frost fronted a number of programmes following the success of ''TW3,'' including its immediate successor, ''Not So Much a Programme, More a Way of Life,'' which he co-chaired with Willie Rushton and P. J. Kavanagh. More notable was ''The Frost Report,'' 1966 and 1967, which launched the television careers of John Cleese, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett. He signed for Rediffusion, the ITV weekday contractor in London, to produce a "heavier" interview-based show called ''The Frost Programme.'' Guests included Sir Oswald Mosley and Rhodesian premier Ian Smith. His memorable dressing-down of insurance fraudster Emil Savundra was generally regarded as the first example of "trial by television" in the UK.

In 1963 a tribute to the recently assassinated President John F. Kennedy on ''That Was the Week That Was'' had seen Frost's fame spread to the United States. His 1970 TV special ''Frost on America'' featured guests such as Jack Benny and Tennessee Williams.

From 1969 to 1972, Frost kept his London shows and fronted ''The David Frost Show'' on the Group W (U.S. Westinghouse Corporation) television stations in the United States. In 1977, he met US President Richard Nixon in a series of interviews for American television.

That same year Frost was the executive producer of the Academy Award-nominated ''The Slipper and the Rose.'' Frost was an organiser of the Music for UNICEF Concert at the United Nations General Assembly in 1979. Ten years later, Frost was hired as the anchor of the new American tabloid news program ''Inside Edition.'' However, he was dismissed after only three weeks, and then-ABC News reporter Bill O'Reilly was recruited in his stead.

During the 1990s, he presented the panel game ''Through the Keyhole'', which featured a long running partnership with Loyd Grossman. After transferring from ITV, his Sunday morning interview programme ''Breakfast with Frost'' ran on the BBC from January 1993 until 29 May 2005. The programme originally began in this format on TV-am in September 1983 as ''Frost on Sunday'' until the station lost its franchise at the end of 1992. Later it transferred briefly to BSB before moving to the BBC.

As of November 2006, he works for Al Jazeera English, presenting a live weekly hour-long current affairs programme, ''Frost Over the World'', which started when the network launched in November 2006. The programme has regularly made headlines with interviewees such as Tony Blair, President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan, Benazir Bhutto and President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua. The programme is produced by the former Question Time editor and Independent on Sunday journalist Charlie Courtauld. He was one of the first to interview the man who authored the historic fatwa on terrorism, Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri.

During his career as a journalist he became Concorde's most frequent flier, having flown between London and New York an average of 20 times per year for 20 years.

In 2007 Frost hosted a discussion with Libya's dictator Gaddafi as part of the Monitor Group's involvement in the country.

Achievements

Frost was instrumental in starting up two important ITV franchises: London Weekend Television in July 1968 and as one of the ''Famous Five'' who launched TV-am in February 1983. Ironically, both had plans that were considered highbrow and both suffered launch problems with low audience ratings and financial difficulties that led to outside parties taking large stakes in the companies and significant changes in business strategy before stability was achieved.

On 20 and 21 July 1969, during the British television Apollo 11 coverage, he presented ''David Frost's Moon Party'' for LWT, a ten-hour discussion and entertainment marathon from LWT's Wembley Studios, on the night Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. Two of his guests on this programme were British historian A.J.P. Taylor and Sammy Davis, Jr. Taylor was skeptical about the proceedings and believed that the moon landing was actually a mock-up being broadcast from a Hollywood studio. Frost started a production company called David Paradine Productions and was also part of a consortium with Richard Branson, which failed to acquire three ITV franchises under the CPV-TV name.

Frost is the only person to have interviewed eight British prime ministers serving between 1964 and 2010 (Harold Wilson, Edward Heath, James Callaghan, Margaret Thatcher, John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron) and the seven US presidents in office between 1969 and 2008 (Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush). He was also the last person to interview Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran.

He is a patron and former vice-president of the Motor Neurone Disease Association charity, as well as being a patron of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, the Hearing Trust, East Anglia's Children's Hospices, the Home Farm Trust and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

After having been in television for 40 years, Frost is worth £200 million. This valuation includes the assets of his main British company and subsidiaries, plus homes in London and the country.

''Frost/Nixon''

Originally a play by Peter Morgan that was developed from a series of interviews, ''Frost/Nixon'' was presented both in London and on Broadway. The play was adapted into a motion picture, starring Michael Sheen as David Frost, Frank Langella as Richard Nixon, directed by Ron Howard, and released in 2008. The film was nominated for five Golden Globe awards: Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score, as well as five Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing.

In February 2009, David Frost was featured on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's (ABC-TV) international affairs programme "Foreign Correspondent" in a report titled "The World According To Frost", reflecting on his long career and portrayal in the feature film ''Frost/Nixon''.

Personal life

He is married to Lady Carina ''née'' Fitzalan Howard (born 20 February 1952), a daughter of the 17th Duke of Norfolk, and has three sons. He was previously married (1981–1982) to Lynne Frederick, widow of Peter Sellers. He was also engaged to American actress Diahann Carroll in the early 1970s.
