The Numbers Game with Russ Roberts -- The Economic Recovery (Part 2)
By historical standards, the current recovery from the recession that began in 2007 has been disappointing. As John Taylor of Stanford University's Hoover Institution and the Department of Economics argues in Part 1 of this discussion on the economy, GDP has not returned to trend, the percent of the population that is working is flat rather than rising, and growth rates are below their usual levels after such a deep slump. In this episode, Taylor and Number's Game host Russ Roberts discuss possible explanations for the sluggish recovery: the ongoing slump in construction employment, the effect of housing prices on saving and spending decisions by households, and this recovery's having been preceded by a financial crisis. Taylor rejects these arguments, arguing instead that the sluggish recovery can be explained by poor economic policy decisions made by the Bush and the Obama administrations. 1) On the argument that there are structural problems in the labor market (0:25) 2) Comparisons to the 1981 recession (2:16) 3) Is this recession special because it followed a financial crisis? Is it a Good Time to Start a Company?
Did you know that 16 of the 30 companies that make up the current Dow Jones Industrial Average started in a recession? With potential customers thinking outside the box, plenty of affordable talent, and more cost-conscious buyers focused on value than brand, it's actually a good time to start a business.

Dow Jones Industrial Average vs Austerity Measures Greece & Italy
www.StockMarketFunding.com Dow Jones Industrial Average vs Austerity Measures Greece & Italy. Greece submits austerity budget, but political differences surface in coalition. Greece's new government took a first step on Friday towards meeting terms of an international bailout needed to avoid bankruptcy, submitting a budget bill that foresees no new austerity measures next year as long as reforms are enacted. The draft predicted the Mediterranean state would face a fifth year of recession but said a plan to convince private creditors to take a 50% loss on bond holdings could cut the fiscal deficit by more than a third. Economists said years of swingeing tax hikes, public salary and pension cuts and other belt-tightening measures could send the economy deeper into contraction and the draft spending plan's forecasts are probably too optimistic. The budget draft forecasts the 220-billion-Euro economy to shrink 2.8% in 2012, versus 5.5% this year. But analysts point to a rift between parties in technocrat Prime Minister Lucas Papademos's unity coalition caused by jockeying for position by the conservative New Democracy party ahead of an election slated for Feb. 19. Papademos must win pledges from the rival parties that they will do what it takes to meet bailout terms or Greece's lenders will withhold an 8-billion-Euro aid tranche Athens needs to dodge default next month, plus longer-term financing later. As part of that process, representatives from the "troika" of the ...

James Murdoch - Dow Jones - Coca-Cola - Bog Council - Echostar Dish Network - MediaBytes 12.07.2007
JAMES MURDOCH will oversee all of NEWS CORP.’s operations in Europe and Asia in a move that will prepare him as an heir to the News. Corp throne. He will gain oversight of the Times of London, the Sun, Sky Italia and more. Murdoch will also move from Chief Executive of BSkyB to Chairman, replacing his father in that role and taking control of News Corp.’s top satellite TV business.
DOW JONES will experience an executive shake-up when NEWS CORP. completes its purchase of the company next week. CEO Richard Zannino will resign and be replaced by News. Corp veteran Leslie Hinton. Other executives are expected to either resign or be replaced, including publisher Gordon Crovitz.
COCA-COLA will launch a “virtual world” today, offering Coke fanatics their own online community. “CC Metro” is a Coke-bottle shaped virtual island that will allow users to create avatars and use them to shop, watch movies and float on hoverboards. Transactions will occur using a virtual currency collected from Coca-Cola products. All of this will occur on There.com, a larger virtual community that is sanitized of foul language and copyrighted material.
TOP GLOBAL BRANDS have formed The Blog Council, a forum for executives engaged in corporate blogging. Members include Microsoft, Cisco, Coca-Cola, Dell, GM, Nokia, SAP and more. The group will discuss best practices, effective tactics and other issues related to corporate blogs.
ECHOSTAR will change its name to DISH Network and spin off some of its businesses into a new entity called EchoStar Holding Company. EHC will get the set-top box business, fixed satellites and digital broadcast centers. Charlie Ergen will be the Chairman and CEO of both companies.

The Dow at 115: Still relevant after all these years
The Dow Jones Industrial Average turns 115 years old on May 26, and it's "just as relevant today as it was 115 years ago," says John Prestbo, editor and executive director, Dow Jones Indexes. As one of three people involved in selecting the companies included in the iconic index, Prestbo is affectionately known as the Keeper of the Dow. "Back then, industrial companies were forming. Today the Dow is composed of all these big corporations, and they are the sensitive antenna that pick up every economic signal that happens -- not only in the United States but in the world." We spoke with Prestbo at an event commemorating the anniversary at the New York Society of Security Analysts. When asked what the index is indicating about today's economy, Prestbo says his read of the Dow tea leaves is that "the economy is recovering and is getting stronger and better but it's doing so very slowly, and it's doing so unevenly." For another conversation we had at the same event, see "Galleon verdict a wake-up call, says NYU biz prof," The Deal magazine's video with professor Richard Sylla. -- Mary Kathleen Flynn

TWU Local 100 Supports Locked-Out Con Ed Workers
A TWU Local 100 contingent joined hundreds of chanting Utility Workers Union Local 1-2 members who have been locked out of their electrical service and repair jobs at Con Edison. The 8500 workers were negotiating for a new contract this past Saturday night when management pulled the plug on the talks and told the union members not to report to work, and that managers would be handling repairs and system maintenance in the interim. The talks broke down because Con Ed management wants health care givebacks, pay freezes, and to convert defined benefit pensions to 401 (k) accounts. The Union wants decent raises -- and points to Con Ed CEO Kevin Burke's $11 million salary and the company's profitability (the company reported a profit of $280 million last quarter, according to Dow Jones) -- as the main reason why its demands should be met. On Tuesday morning TWU Local 100 Director of Organizing Charles Jenkins told Con Ed workers that transit workers have committed ourselves to the fight to help them win a decent contract. You can sign the NYS AFL-CIO's pledge and leave a statement of support for Con Ed workers here: nysaflcio.org
