Vali Nasr on US-Iranian Relations
Foreign Affairs Focus: US-Iranian Relations With Vali Nasr Managing Editor Jonathan Tepperman interviews author Vali Nasr about developments in Iran, its relationship with the diplomatic community, and what the United States should do to finally get Iran to the negotiation table. Current sanctions are designed to be more effective than in the past, but will instead be counterproductive, pushing Iran to be more aggressive in return. Dr. Nasr--professor of international politics at Tufts University and former senior advisor to the US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan--argues that active diplomacy and policy adjustments are crucial for avoiding military conflict. Is al Qaeda gaining foothold in Syria?
Although the uprising in Syria was first talked about as part of the Arab Spring, few now believe the bloody conflict will lead to the emergence of democracy. As the country frays, there are fears about the influence of Islamist extremists in any future Syrian regime. Vali Nasr, a professor of international politics at Johns Hopkins University and a foreign policy adviser to the White House, talks to Australia Network's Newsline.
