The semahane (whirling-dervish hall) at the centre of this tekke (dervish lodge) was erected in 1491 and renovated in 1608 and 2009. It's part of a complex including a meydan-ı şerif (courtyard), çeşme (drinking fountain), türbesi (tomb) and hamuşan (cemetery). The oldest of six historic Mevlevihaneleri (Mevlevi tekkes) remaining in İstanbul, the complex was converted into a museum in 1946.
The Mevlevi tarika (order), founded in the central Anatolian city of Konya during the 13th century, flourished throughout the Ottoman Empire. Like several other orders, the Mevlevis stressed the unity of humankind before God regardless of creed.
Taking their name from the great Sufi mystic and poet, Celaleddin Rumi (1207–73), called Mevlana (Our Leader) by his disciples, Mevlevis seek to achieve mystical communion with God through a sema (ceremony) involving chants, prayers, music and a whirling dance. This tekke 's first şeyh (sheikh) was Şemaî Mehmed Çelebi, a grandson of the great Mevlana.
Dervish orders were banned in the early days of the Turkish republic because of their ultraconservative religious politics. Although the ban has been lifted, only a handful of functioning tekkes remain in İstanbul, including this one and the İstanbul Bilim Sanat Kültür ve Eğitim Derneği in Fatih. Konya remains the heart of the Mevlevi order.
Beneath the semahane is an interesting exhibit that includes displays of Mevlevi clothing, turbans and accessories. The mahfiller (upstairs floor) houses the tekke 's collection of traditional musical instruments, calligraphy and ebru (paper marbling).
The hamuşan is full of stones with graceful Ottoman inscriptions, including the tomb of Galip Dede, the 17th-century Sufi poet whom the street is named after. The shapes atop the stones reflect the headgear of the deceased, each hat denoting a different religious rank.

Sufism is the mystical Islamic belief and practice in which Muslims seek to find the truth of divine love and knowledge through direct personal experience of God. Sufi whirling is a form of physically active meditation which is still practiced by the Sufi Dervishes of the Mevlevi order. It is a customary dance performed within the worship ceremony, through which Dervishes aim to reach the source of all perfection. This is sought through abandoning one's ego or personal desires, by listening to the music, focusing on God, and spinning one's body in repetitive circles, which has been seen as a symbolic imitation of planets in the Solar System orbiting the sun.
The Dervish’s camel's hair hat represents the tombstone of the ego; his wide, white skirt represents the ego's shroud. At the beginning of the service, by holding his arms crosswise, the Dervish represents the number one, thus testifying to God's unity. While whirling, his arms are open: his right arm is directed to the sky, ready to receive God's beneficence; his left hand, upon which his eyes are fastened, is turned toward the earth. Revolving from right to left around the heart, the whirler embraces all humanity with love. The ball of the left foot never leaves the floor.
The Sheikh leads the ritual with strict regulations. To begin, the Sheikh stands in the most honored corner of the dancing place, and the dervishes pass by him three times, each time exchanging greetings, until the circling movement starts. If a Dervish should become too enraptured, another Sufi, who is in charge of the orderly performance, will gently touch his frock in order to curb his movement. The dance of the Dervishes is one of the most impressive features of the mystical life in Islam, and the music accompanying it is beautiful. Bob and I both thought it was mesmerizing.

The whirling dance or Sufi whirling that is proverbially associated with dervishes is most associated with the Mevlevi order in Turkey, and is part of a formal ceremony known as the Sema. Event Details:
According to the Global Terrorism Index, religious extremism has become the main driver of terrorism in recent years. This narrative is repeatedly promoted by government ministers, however, a growing body of academic work holds this position to be fundamentally flawed. A better account of terrorism would acknowledge the geopolitical, economic and, perhaps most importantly, a historically accurate Islamic perspective.
Islam has become associated in the minds of many with an extremism that promotes not only terrorism, but coerciveness in many forms: male dominance, narrow dogmatic thinking, religious and political tyranny. In order to counter the mentality that breeds coercion and violence, we need to restore the understanding of Islam as a spiritual practice that transforms the ego (nafs).
Join us for a fascinating discussion with Sheikh Kabir Helminski on extremism as a pathology of the ego with a religious justification. All human endeavours and institutions are prone to degradation because of egoism. The real and original Islam was and is a remedy for this spiritual disease.
Speakers:
Kabir Edmund Helminski is co-founder and co-director of the Threshold Society a non-profit educational organisation and has been working within the Mevlevi tradition of Sufism for about thirty years alongside his wife Camille Helminski. He has developed programmes that provide a structure for practice and study within Sufism and spiritual psychology and is author and/translator of numerous books and volumes of Sufi literature including many works of Rumi, and two books on Sufism: Living Presence, A Sufi Way to Mindfulness and the Essential Self (1992) and a collection of essays, The Knowing Heart (1999).
Kabir began the study of Sufism with Suleyman Hayati of Konya and was officially recognized as a Shaikh of the Mevlevi Order of Sufism in 1990, by the late Celalettin Celebi, former Head of the Mevlevi Order. From 1980 until 1999 he was the director of Threshold Books, one of the foremost publishers of Sufi literature. Between 1994 and 2000 he toured with the whirling dervishes of Turkey bringing the spiritual culture of the Mevlevis to more than 100,000 people. His books have been translated into Spanish, Italian, Dutch, German, Turkish, Russian, and Indonesian. He has an M.A. in transpersonal studies from the Institute of Transpersonal Studies and an honorary Ph.D. in literature from Selçuk University Konya Turkey. He has lectured at hundreds of institutions and in 2009 was named as one of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center in association with Georgetown University. He is one of the signatories of "A Common Word Between Us and You", an open letter by Islamic scholars to Christian leaders, calling for peace and understanding. He resides with his family in Louisville Kentucky USA.
