14 Sep 1982 Why did the Prince of Monaco authorize the removing from life support of his own wife?
Feast of the Cross - It's All In The Movies | Death of a Princess - The Story of Grace Kelly's Fatal Car Crash -- On the morning of September 13, 1982, Princess Grace and her daughter Stephanie were to head back to Monaco from their vacation residence, Roc Agel. Grace Kelly Crashed Car At 9:30 in the morning, with Stephanie in the passenger seat and Princess Grace behind the wheel, the car would set out down a narrow, treacherous and windy road, CD37 (Route de La Tourbie). Contrary to popular belief, this was not the same road on which she drove in her 1955 movie, TO CATCH A THIEF. How ironic would that have been?
As Princess Grace's car approached a hairpin curve in the road known as "Devil's Curse," it suddenly accelerated to well over 50 m.p.h.
Princess Grace and Stephanie were taken to a local hospital in Monaco for treatment for their injuries. Reports say that Monaco Hospital (later renamed Centre Hospitalier Princesse Grace - Princess Grace Hospital Center), where the injured survivors were taken, was not well equipped for these type injuries.
Fearing that the princess may survive as a helpless invalid, the royal palace attempted a cover up of the extent of her injuries. But at 10:30 p.m. on September 14, 1982, Princess Grace was taken off her life-support equipment and she passed on to the next plane. She was 52-years-old.
UPDATE: What is left out is the main political scandal in Europe at that time. Two weeks prior to her death, a membership list of the infamous oligarchic P2 Lodge became public. The Italian government collapsed when many of the leaders names were discovered to be on it. It was known by intelligence groups to be a secret collection of nation destroying oligarchs, which spanned numerous countries. The chairman of the P2 Lodge was her husband Prince Ranier, of Monaco. Perhaps things she had ignored in the past suddenly seemed to have more weight. Perhaps she intended to do the moral thing. To get away from him for a start, not trusting the chauffeur of the prince, since he would naturally spy on her for the prince.

On September 13, 1982, while driving with her daughter, Princess Grace suffered a stroke. Grace was pulled alive from the wreckage. She died the following day at the Monaco Hospital, she was 52 years old. Grace was buried in the Grimaldi family vault on September 18, 1982, after a requiem mass in Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Monaco.

Feast of the Cross September 14 - This feast is called in Greek Ὕψωσις τοῦ Τιμίου Σταυροῦ (literally, "Raising Aloft of the Precious Cross"). In Latin it is called Exaltatio Sanctae Crucis (literally, "Raising Aloft of the Holy Cross". In some parts of the Anglican Communion the feast is called Holy Cross Day, a name also used by Lutherans. The celebration is sometimes called Feast of the Glorious Cross.
According to legends that spread widely throughout Western Europe, the True Cross was discovered in 326 by Saint Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, during a pilgrimage she made to Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built at the site of the discovery, by order of Helena and Constantine. The church was dedicated nine years later, with a portion of the cross placed inside it.

Monaco
I took this old video in the beautiful city of Monaco a few years ago while i was there on holidays.
Monaco i/ˈmɒnəkoʊ/, officially the Principality of Monaco (French: Principauté de Monaco; Monégasque: Principatu de Múnegu; Italian: Principato di Monaco; Occitan: Principat de Mónegue), is a sovereign city state, located on the French Riviera in Western Europe. Bordered by France on three sides, with one side bordering the Mediterranean Sea, its center is about 16 km (9.9 mi) from Italy, and is only 15 km (9.3 mi) north east of Nice, France. It has an area of 1.98 km2 (0.76 sq mi), and a population of 35,986, making Monaco the second smallest and the most densely populated country in the world.
Monaco has a land border of only 4.4 km (2.7 mi), a coastline of 4.1 km (2.5 mi), and a width that varies between 1.7 km (1.1 mi) and 349 metres (382 yards). The highest point in the country is a narrow pathway named Chemin des Révoires on the slopes of Mont Agel, in the Les Révoires district, which is 161 metres (528 feet) above sea level. Monaco's most populated Quartier is Monte Carlo, and the most populated Ward is Larvotto/Bas Moulins. After a recent expansion of Port Hercules, Monaco's total area is 2.05 km2 (0.79 sq mi), with new plans to extend the district of Fontvieille, with land reclaimed from the Mediterranean Sea.
Monaco is a principality governed under a form of constitutional monarchy, with Prince Albert II as head of state. However, even though Prince Albert II is a constitutional monarch, he still has immense political power. The House of Grimaldi have ruled Monaco, with brief interruptions, since 1297. The official language is French, but Monégasque, Italian, and English are widely spoken and understood. The state's sovereignty was officially recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861, with Monaco finally becoming a full UN voting member in 1993, after much political debate. Despite Monaco's independence and separate foreign policy, its defence is the responsibility of France. However, Monaco does maintain two small military units, totaling 255 officers and men, the Corps des Sapeurs-Pompiers de Monaco, and the Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince.
Economic development was spurred in the late 19th century with a railroad line to France, and the opening of the first casino, Monte Carlo Casino. Since then, the principality's mild climate, splendid scenery, and gambling facilities have made Monaco world-famous as a tourist and recreation center for the rich and famous. However, in more recent years Monaco has become a major banking center holding over 100 billion euro worth of funds, and has successfully sought to diversify its economy into the services and small, high-value-added, nonpolluting industries. The state has no income tax and low business taxes, and is well known for being a tax haven.
Monaco boasts the world's highest GDP nominal per capita at $172,676 and GDP PPP per capita at $186,175. Monaco also has the world's highest life expectancy at almost 90 years, and the lowest unemployment rate at 0%, with over 48,000 workers who commute from France and Italy each day. For the third year in a row, Monaco in 2011 had the world's most expensive real estate market, at $56,300 per square metre. According to the CIA World Factbook, Monaco has the world's lowest poverty rate, and the highest number of millionaires and billionaires per capita in the world.[

The Prince's Soldiers
The Princely Rifles and assorted police and military forces of the Principality of Monaco. Although, as a protectorate, France is responsible for the defense of Monaco the Prince does maintain, and long has, his own security forces. Monaco also has the largest police force for its size of any country in the world, something the late Rainier III insisted on to prevent organized crime from gaining a foothold in the principality as has so often happened with other famous gaming centers.

History of Monaco
Founded in 1215 as a colony of Genoa, Monaco has been ruled by the House of Grimaldi since 1297, except when under French control from 1789 to 1814. Designated as a protectorate of Sardinia from 1815 until 1860 by the Treaty of Vienna, Monaco's sovereignty was recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861. The Prince of Monaco was an absolute ruler until a constitution was promulgated in 1911.
The 1907 Catholic Encyclopedia wrote, "From ancient times until the nineteenth century the port of Monaco was among the most important of the French Mediterranean coast, but now it has lost all commercial significance. Among the notable constructions of the principality are the ancient fortifications, the old ducal palace which contains beautiful frescoes by Annibale Carracci, Orazio Ferrari, and Carlone, the cathedral, built (1884-87) in the Byzantine style, by Prince Albert III, the Casino of Monte Carlo, and the monumental fountain of the public square. Monaco dates from the time of the Phoenicians, who, on the promontory upon which the old town is built, erected a temple to the god Melkarth, called Monoicos, solitary, that is, not connected with the cult of Ashtoreth; whence the town derived its name, which is Moneque, in Provencal.
In the early Middle Ages the neighbouring lords often contended with each other for the possession of this important port, which later was occupied by the Saracens; it was taken from them in the tenth century by Count Grimaldi, in whose family the principality remains to this day. Formerly, it comprised Mentone and Roquebrune. The Grimaldis often had to defend themselves against Spanish or Genoese fleets; the most famous blockade of the town was that of 1506, which failed. In 1619 Prince Honoratus II, with the assistance of the French, drove the Spaniards from Monaco, and since that time the principality has been under the protection of France. During the Revolution, Monaco was annexed to France, but the principality was re-established in 1814. A revolution broke out in 1848 against the misgovernment of Prince Honoratus V, who lost Mentone and Roquebrune, these cities declaring themselves free republics, and (1860) voting for their annexation to France."
In July 1918, a treaty was signed providing for limited French protection over Monaco. The treaty, formally noted in the Treaty of Versailles, established that Monegasque policy would be aligned with French political, military, and economic interests. Prince Rainier III, acceded to the throne following the death of his grandfather, Prince Louis II, in 1949. The current ruler, Prince Albert, was born in 1958 and acceded to the Throne upon the death of his father in April 2005. A new constitution, proclaimed in 1962, abolished capital punishment, provided for female suffrage, and established a Supreme Court to guarantee fundamental liberties. In 1993, Monaco became an official member of the United Nations with full voting rights. The Principality of Monaco is a sovereign and independent state, linked closely to France by the Treaty of July 1918, which was formally noted in Article 436 of the Treaty of Versailles of 1919. The foreign policy of Monaco is one illustration of this accord: France has agreed to defend the independence and sovereignty of Monaco, while the Monegasque Government has agreed to exercise its sovereign rights in conformity with French interests. Since then, the relations between the sovereign states of France and Monaco have been further defined in the Treaty of 1945 and the Agreement of 1963. Monaco is renegotiating its treaty with France. The revised treaty is expected to enter into force in 2004. It is reported that the terms of the new treaty would assist Monaco in joining the Council of Europe as a full member, and would: 1. Upgrade France's representation in Monaco from Consulate General to that of an embassy; 2. Permit, for the first time, other countries to accredit ambassadors to Monaco; and 3. Formally recognize the succession scheme set out in the 1962 Constitution, which extends eligibility to the Prince's daughters and other family members.

• riding distance: 30.7 km

Day seven is always an odd one here at Trans-Provence .
The contradictory feeling of sadness at the ending of a long journey , but happiness that you've succeeded and that the end is just 30 km 's away is a constant push and pull inside from the first pedal stroke of the morning till the salt sting of the Mediterranean against scratched and tired skin in the afternoon.
These journeys have been different as well for each person, for some it's been a chance to find out how far they can ride and what they can ride down , for some people it's been a journey to far , and there's those who have raced.
With the racers, whether Pro or expert they have all regardless of position given their all, don't think that the battle between the top five expert racers has been any less fought for than the top five pro's , the battle for 18th and 19th may well have been a bloody tussle since day one for those two riders and down to the last loose drop on the road above Monaco.
The riding today is relatively less hard than most of the others - but still after the first small climb to the Start of Special stage 23 you're heading into a 600 metre drop over only 5km's. Initially quick but a reasonably straightforward singletrack drop leads inevitably in to the loose cornered switchbacks that have characterised the last couple of days riding, interspersed with sets of unevenly spaced small steps it's a mini 1000 press up's to test the arms one last time.
The special ends in the valley of the dogs - not the real name, but we left to the howling of hundreds of canines staying in kennels nearby awakened by squealing brakes and the noise of a winner or loser in the tyre and traction game high above them , the noise does not encourage lingering and the urge to finish is strengthened .
The final climb proper leads the way to the to the final stage of this year, Special stage 24. Before you get there it's 12km of road climbing, but not just any road climb. Nothing but the Infamous Col de la Madone. Made famous by countless tour riders but of course especially Lance and the bike named after it. After the carrying and pushing up near vertical slopes the competitors have been through over the last six days it 's a joy to gain altitude via constant gradient and tarmac. From the top of the road proper the route leads through the distinctly eery Military base that marks the summit ,with skull and cross-bone signs all over the place we hope it's not a portent for the final run down into Monaco.
The final stage itself looks down straight into the hi-rise offices and flats of some of the worlds richest people while were still on the gas for the final timed section . Special Stage 24 is an odd combo of woodland loam initially ,before turning into fist sized marbles on dust for the second third interspersed with whipping bushes, before one final dusty rush of singletrack (watch out for that drop off hidden by the tree! ) and it's done - the last time the timing chip will be bleeped - the last time you have to worry about how long you took, it's still a fair descent in to Monaco proper including plenty of Urban step riding ,but the clocks stopped clicking .
Beers on the jetty followed by more beers along the sea front on the way to the campsite for the night, with even more with dinner ended a perfect week .Some of us slept under the stars before starting our journeys home on Sunday, and the count-down till Trans-Provence 2012.

Prince Albrecht of Urach (German: Fürst Albrecht von Urach, Graf von Württemberg; or Albrecht Fürst von Urach.) (18 October 1903 -- 11 December 1969) was a German nobleman, artist and wartime author, journalist, linguist and diplomat.
His father's mother was Princess Florestine of Monaco (1833-98), and he was named Albrecht after her nephew Albert I, Prince of Monaco. His family were the legitimate heirs presumptive to Monaco's throne between 1911 and 1918 (See Monaco Succession Crisis of 1918). Before 1911 his father was intended to inherit Monaco, as the son of his cousin Albert I, Prince of Monaco had no legitimate children.
... according to the Chicago Daily Tribune von Urach was in Paris in March 1930 unsuccessfully trying to persuade the French Foreign Office to accept him as the respectable and legitimate heir of Prince Louis after the recent divorce of Louis' daughter and son-in-law.
... regular drinking friend was Richard Sorge, the famous Red Army spy.

1982 Grace Kelly car accident - 1981 Pope John Paul II assassination attempt - 1980 Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870 crash -- Rosario Priore - Felix Morlion - Jens Chr. Hauge | Nice Air Base (Base Aérienne 943 Nice "Capitaine Auber") of the French Air Force is divided between two sites: one at the summit of Mont Agel near Nice in the Alpes-Maritimes département, and the other at Gardanne barracks in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. The Mont Agel base uses the facilities of the former Ouvrage Mont Agel of the Alpine Line. Its mission is the surveillance of aviation movements in southeastern France, operating as Centre de Détection et de Contrôle (CDC) 05.943, tactical call sign "Rhodia radar". A similar facility is located at Drachenbronn Air Base in northeastern France.
BA943 is responsible for the identification of all aircraft in its zone of responsibility, and for the coordination of military air traffic in the southeastern airspace of France. The facility has the capacity to interact with E-3F and E-2C airborne control aircraft. It is equipped with a 23cm two-dimensional search radar and a three-dimensional "PALMIER" radar on the site. Data is integrated by a VISU IV system.
