Rail Road Xing at Coonoor
In this incident at 3.40 PM on May 8, 2012 at the Coonoor level crossing (LC 10 at KM 26.9), one of the gates could not be closed because a bus tried to pass through as the gates were being closed to road traffic. The train from Ootacamund to Mettupalayam had halted as the semaphore signal was in danger. Due to the chaos, police personnel were called to clear the traffic gridlock, and move the bus a bit to permit partial closure of the gate to allow the train to proceed by waving a green flag signal instead of lowering the arm of the semaphore signal. The rack section of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway begins soon after passing the rail-road crossing.

Chugging into Coonoor
The train from Mettupalayam negotiates a bend at the end of the steep rack-section of the meter gauge Nilgiri Mountain Railway, near the level crossing barrier at Coonoor. The vintage Swiss built engine 37386-X de-links the rack mechanism and proceeds at full steam as the brakesmen in the carriages wave the green flags on sighting the "all-clear" home signal at Coonoor station. This system of signalling exists only on the Nilgiri Railway, among the five mountain rail lines in India, as the leading passenger car faces the track, and the engine is positioned at the rear end on the uphill run; the driver therefore being blind to obstacles ahead on the curvy track. On the downhill run, the engine leads the train. At Coonoor, the steam engine is detached and a bio-diesel powered YDM-4 locomotive takes over for the onward journey to Ooty (or Udhagamandalam) on a easy gradient of 1 in 23 maximum; which is 1 foot gain/loss for every 23 feet of travel.

Via Glendale Tea Garden, Coonoor
"Tea Garden Express" chugs merrily along the rack-and-pinion route of the 111 yrs old meter gauge UNESCO World Heritage Site - Nilgiri Mountain Railway [NMR], amidst lush green landscape of tea plantations at Glendale, near Coonoor. NMR remains the only fully operational steam railway left in India. Seen here is the train from Mettupalayam with four carriages powered by a vintage Swiss built coal fired steam engine, X-37392, negotiating a curved bridge and Tunnel No.13 en route uphill toward Coonoor, where a YDM-4 bio-diesel locomotive takes over on the non-rack easy-gradient section to Udhagamandalam.(Ootacamund) . VMGovind Krishnan's book: "NMR [Nilgiri Mountain Railway]-From Lifeline to Oblivion", documents the efforts of the public to thwart the moves of the Indian government to dismantle this unique railway, and to keep the engineering marvel in running condition.

Black Beauty Contest on Nilagiri Railway, Coonoor
On the occasion of the centenary of the extension of the metre-gauge Nilgiri Mountain Railway between Coonoor and Ootacamund [Udhagamandalam], a Black Beauty Contest was held at Coonoor on Oct.18, 2008, in rainy weather and fog. Seen here is the Swiss steam engine 37393-X, named Aryabatta, in bright canary yellow attire "chugging on the ramp" toward the platform where the visitors and the judges were seated. This oil-fired steam engine, converted from coal-firing mode in 2007 at Golden Rock Workshop, Trichinopoly, India, was built by Swiss Locomotive Works, Winterthur in 1950 and entered service on Jan. 17, 1953. It is still in use, pushing the train on the steep incline between Mettupalayam and Coonoor on the NMR. NMR is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005. VMGovind Krishnan's book: "NMR [Nilgiri Mountain Railway]-From Lifeline to Oblivion", documents the efforts of the public to thwart the moves of the Indian government to dismantle this unique railway, and keep it in running condition.

A bird's eye view of the Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam (or Ootacamund) Passenger chugging up the steep gradient toward Coonoor, on the rack section of the metre-gauge Nilgiri Mountain Railway; powered by a vintage Swiss built steam engine; converted recently from coal-firing to oil-firing mode.
