Iran's nuclear rights and Baghdad talks-Iran Today 06-01-2012
The anticipation finally comes to an end. On the 23rd of May 2012, under a Baghdad sky filled with dust, talks got under way between Iran and the P5+1 group members. Two months ago, on the 14th of April 2012, based on Iran's suggestion, the two sides met in Istanbul to conduct talks without any preconditions. Even the sand storm engulfing Baghdad failed to impede the negotiations. Many experts from both sides had high hopes that the talks would yield desired results: Especially as only two days before, IAEA Chief Yukia Amano had unexpectedly travelled to Iran to conduct talks with Iranian officials. During his whistle-stop visit, Amano held talks with the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council for more than two hours. The two sides seemingly left the talks contented with the outcome. But among all the hopes attached to the Baghdad talks, two days before they got underway, The US Senate threw a spanner in the works and imposed fresh sanctions against Iran. The sanctions made subject to Washington's embargo, any country or company that entered business contracts with Iran in oil or nuclear sectors. The ratification of the sanctions came as many believed that the Baghdad talks would lead to a halt in at least part of the previous sanctions. The nuclear one thousand and one nights' story did not conclude in Baghdad. After three rounds of intense negotiations over two days, the parties agreed to conduct a further round of negotiations on the 18th and 19th of ...

Baghdad Street Stories - Iraq
September sees 110 die in violence? To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Ten years after the beginning of American payback following 911 Iraq looks back with confusion. They had no truck with Al Qaeda but today their country is ruined, one repressive regime gone and another in its place. Just a few brief encounters with the real people in Baghdad illustrates that this fledgling democracy has failed to achieve any substantial development. In fact, it's dubious whether democracy has bettered life at all, as factions and political parties follow their own violent agendas. "The significant capital is with the militias, who establish civil organisations that cause destruction: they build organisations that destroy." Yet a few resolute citizens remain confident that change will ensue: "there is a space for democracy, it might be small but it is being established". Tareq al-Hashemi, former Iraqi VP reactions after being sentenced to death in absentia
Fugitive Iraqi Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi on Monday rejected the death sentence handed to him by a Baghdad court on charges of running death squads. Hashemi earlier described the trial as a political vendetta against him. Al-Hashemi fled to Turkey after Iraq's Shiite-led government issued the terror charges against him in December, the day after US troops withdrew from the country. He would receive a retrial if he agrees to return to Baghdad, but al-Hashemi has refused, saying he will never get a fair hearing in a Baghdad court. He reacts on FRANCE 24. Sirens Of Baghdad - Iraq
September 2009 For the first time, a foreign crew has followed fire fighters in Baghdad as they handle the aftermath of suicide bombings. They bear witness to the absurd violence that is still tearing the city apart. "You see this bullet-hole? Look: theres another here, and another one there." Mohammed points to the numerous impacts puncturing his truck. "One day a car bomb exploded in a parking lot. The military warned us there could be another but we still went." Ideal targets, fire fighters like Mohammed face constant danger. With sectarian violence reaching new heights, Sunni and Shiite alike are forced to hide their true identity, which makes the job even riskier. "They will tell from my name that I am a Sunni", Assam chips in nervously. The phone rings. Thirty suicide bombers are in circulation. Sixty people already dead. Mohammed rushes to the scene but the chaos slows him down. Powerless to prevent the violence, the fire fighters of Baghdad can only pick up the pieces.

Talk to Al Jazeera - Massoud Barzani: Flying the Kurdish flag
There are more than thirty million Kurds - most of them living in an overlapping area of Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. It is said to be the biggest ethnic community in the world without a homeland. In some of the countries in which they live, they are prevented from speaking their language or obtaining citizenship. Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi leader, used chemical weapons against the Kurds, destroyed their villages and killed tens of thousands of them during his rule. The bodies are still being unearthed. The US encouraged them to rise up against Saddam when his forces were driven out of Kuwait in 1991 but then left them hanging. And thousands died fleeing to Turkey as refugees. But the no-fly zone that the US, British and French established to protect them from Saddam's attacks, allowed them to break away from Iraqi government authority, while remaining part of Iraq. Since 2003, the Kurdish region has become the most stable and prosperous part of Iraq, fuelled by oil and Turkish investment. And while relations with Turkey have improved, they have worsened with Baghdad - with disagreements over oil, land and politics that some fear could turn violent. Massoud Barzani, the Kurdish president, has emerged as a crucial player in Iraqi politics and as the leader of Kurdish aspirations in the region. He has warned that Iraq's Kurds could seek independence if they do not get what they need from Baghdad. And that his region will not be dragged down by the rest of Iraq. On ...

Ace In The Hole- Capturing Saddam Hussein
Baghdad fell after just twenty-one days of combat, but the capture of Saddam Hussein took a further eight months and was played out amid a brutal guerrilla war in which the hunters frequently became the hunted. The dictator had simply disappeared and finding him dead or alive was a top priority for US forces. The search for Saddam quickly became a real life crime drama as investigators combined sophisticated software and old-fashioned police work to tighten the noose on Saddam's inner circle. Ace in the Hole is the first-hand story of the US Army investigators who tracked down every lead until their final raid uncovered the Iraqi dictator cowering in his 'spider-hole.
