Artifact Spotlight: SWIFT BOATS IN VIETNAM
At the height of the U.S. Navy's involvement in the Vietnam War, the riverine force, or "Brown Water Navy" as it came to be known, included more than 30,000 Sailors and over 350 patrol vessels.
Among these vessels was the Patrol Craft Fast, a class of civilian water taxis that the Navy obtained to patrol the coastal areas and later for work in the interior waterways. Outfitted with armor and heavy firepower, these boats would be better known by their nicknames: Swift Boats.

Patrol Boat, River & Swift Boats (documentary)- Vietnam War
Patrol Boat, River or PBR, is the United States Navy designation for a small rigid-hulled patrol boat used in the Vietnam War from March 1966 until the end of 1971. They were deployed in a force that grew to 250 boats, the most common craft in the River Patrol Force, Task Force 116, and were used to stop and search river traffic in areas such as the Mekong Delta, the Rung Sat Special Zone, the Saigon River and in I Corps, in the area assigned to Task Force Clearwater, in an attempt to disrupt weapons shipments. In this role they frequently became involved in firefights with enemy soldiers on boats and on the shore, were used to insert and extract Navy SEAL teams, and were employed by the United States Army's 458th Transportation Company, known as the 458th Seatigers.

To combat the Vietcong guerillas disrupting communications and supplies in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War, the U.S. Navy utilized small fiberglass hull boats designated Patrol Boat, Riverine (PBR). The boats began operations in March 1966 with Operation Game Warden and were used for stop and search inspections for junks and sampans in the river traffic and to assist the U.S. Army's 9th Infantry Division to search out and destroy large formations of Viet Cong operations.
The PBR was the first jet-propelled watercraft used in combat, and it became an integral element of the “Brown Water Navy.”
The Vietnam War (also known by other names) was a conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. It was the second of the Indochina Wars and was officially fought between North Vietnam
and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supported by the Soviet Union, China, and other communist allies; South Vietnam was supported by the United States and other
anti-communist allies. The war is widely considered to be a Cold War-era proxy war. It lasted almost 20 years, with direct U.S. involvement ending in 1973. The conflict also spilled over into neighboring states, exacerbating the Laotian Civil War and the Cambodian Civil War, which ended with all three countries becoming communist states by 1975.

Swiftships’ 28 Meter Coastal Patrol Craft (CPC28) is designed for multiple roles, including Coastal Defense, Anti-Surface Operations, Maritime Security Operations (MSO), Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO), Surveillance, and Intelligence Gathering, Search and Rescue, and more. As of March 22, 2023, 26 vessels have been built, and 23 vessels are under construction and/or contracted, for a grand total of 49, making the CPC28 one of the world's most serially produced vessels. The CPC28 is co-produced with the Egyptian Navy based on Swiftships' proprietary design, with Swiftships supplying kits, in-country production supervision, and SME support. The success of the CPC28 is based on the vessel's unmatched performance, extremely low lifecycle cost, and easy maintenance characteristics. This program is also a co-production success story that started in 2010, and it evidences Swiftships' expertise in Planning Yard and Co-production programs.
The CPC28 is based on an exceptionally well-proven hull and can be built in all steel, all aluminum, or a steel hull with an aluminum superstructure. Weather survivability includes sea state 5 at the best heading and fully operational capability at sea state 3. This vessel runs on diesel fuel, has a top speed of 25 knots, and a range of 900 nautical miles. Maximum range can be increased by side-by-side refueling at sea.

With the 1/25 scale PCF Mark I, Pro Boat honors the heroes who piloted Patrol Craft Fast (PCF) vessels on patrols during the Vietnam war. Veterans, their families, and history enthusiasts will all appreciate the depth and the accuracy of its detail. On the water, Pro Boat engineering delivers outstanding performance for all RC boat enthusiasts to admire!
The real PCF boats — also known as Swift Boats — were all-aluminum, 50-foot craft developed by request of the U.S. Navy specifically to combat insurgent activities. Initially used to patrol coastal areas, PCF missions later expanded to interior waterways where they carried Vietnamese forces, blocked enemy arms and munitions, and transported SEAL teams for counter-insurgency operations.
Though detailed enough to simply enjoy on display, the Pro Boat PCF Mark I is also equipped to execute daring missions at your local lake or pond. Two 390 brushed motors with aluminum heatsinks supply the muscle to move easily at scale speeds and maneuver with finesse. The included Spektrum SLT3 radio and 40-amp ESC/RX 2-in-1 provide dependable control of the on-board electronics — and let you operate the boat’s LED lights right from the transmitter.
In addition to the lights, there are plenty more faithful scale features on the molded ABS hull. These include a .50 caliber gun on the bow, M60 machine guns, and a .50mm gun on the transom, plus life rings, docking tires, light pods, antennas, rail chains, and a flag. Eager to take its accuracy to an even higher level? The PCF Mark I comes ready to upgrade for an optional rotating machine gun turret (servo and custom transmitter required).
Out of the box, the Pro Boat PCF Mark I arrives expertly painted and finished with an accurate military trim scheme that enhances the boat’s scale realism and its ready-to-run ease. Just add your choice of 3S LiPo battery and charger and you’re ready for patrol!
