Badminton House
Badminton House is a large country house in Gloucestershire, England, and has been the principal seat of the Dukes of Beaufort since the late 17th century, when the family moved from Raglan Castle, which had been ruined in the English Civil War. The architect William Kent renovated and extended the house in the Palladian style in the early 18th century, but many earlier elements remain. The sport of badminton was re-introduced from British India and popularised at the house, hence the sport's name.

The original building was established in approximately 1300 AD by Henry of Kingswood as a tithe barn annex of Kingswood Abbey. The estate was expanded to include a 16th century manor house and other buildings. Structures added in the Late Middle Ages to mid 17th century include a chapel, granary and stables and other buildings. The buildings are all constructed from limestone; which locally quarried stones are typically flat and easily stacked for drystone wall purposes.

Cinderford
Cinderford is a small town in Gloucestershire, England, with a population of 8,116 people (United Kingdom Census 2001). The town lies on the eastern fringe of the Forest of Dean. The town only came into existence in the 19th century due to the rapid expansion of the local coal mines. There is a visual clue to Cinderford's origins in that the style and layout of the town, with long rows of identical terraced housing, very similar to many of the South Wales Valleys towns that also grew up from the coal mining industry. When the mines here closed in the 1950s, Cinderford suffered worse than Coleford, the other main town of the Forest, because it had few other industries to fall back on. Today Cinderford has some light and heavy industry, but generally the town is doing as well economically as the older towns in the west of the Forest, and unemployment in the town is quite low.

Dean Forest Railway
The Dean Forest Railway is a long heritage railway that runs between Lydney and Parkend in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. The route was part of the Severn and Wye Railway which ran from Lydney to Cinderford. The society that operates the line started steam locomotive operations in 1971, and bought the trackbed and line from British Rail in 1986. Services were extended from Norchard to Lydney Lakeside in 1991, Lydney Junction in 1995/96, Tufts Junction in 2001, and to Whitecroft in 2003. HM Railway Inspectorate approval for the section to Parkend was granted in December 2005. Trains are operated by both steam and heritage diesel locomotives, and heritage diesel multiple units.

The River Churn is one of the Cotswold rivers that feeds into the River Thames catchment. It arises at Seven Springs (on the A436 road) near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England and flows south across the Cotswold dip slope, passing through Cirencester and joining the River Thames near Cricklade in Wiltshire. Its length from source to confluence with the Thames is considerably greater than the Thames itself from source to the same confluence but, historically, the Churn is a regarded as a tributary. Rodmarton Manor
Rodmarton Manor is a large country house, in Rodmarton, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire, built for the Biddulph family. It is a Grade I listed building. It was constructed in 1909-1929 in an Arts and Crafts style, to a design by Ernest Barnsley. After Barnsley's death in 1925, it was completed by Sidney Barnsley, his brother, and then by Norman Jewson, Ernest's son in law. All the construction materials were obtained locally, and were hand worked by local craftsmen. It contains a fine collection of Cotswold Arts and Crafts furniture and associated contents, and is set in a garden of the period, which is regularly open to the public.

Thomas Wolsey
Thomas Wolsey (c. 1471 or 1475? – 29 November 1530; sometimes spelled Woolsey) was an English political figure and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. When Henry VIII became king of England in 1509, Wolsey became the King's almoner. Wolsey's affairs prospered and by 1514 he had become the controlling figure in virtually all matters of state and was extremely powerful within the Church. The highest political position he attained was Lord Chancellor, the King's chief advisor, enjoying great freedom and often depicted as an alter rex (other king). Within the Church he became Archbishop of York, the second most important seat in England, and then was made a cardinal in 1515, giving him precedence over even the Archbishop of Canterbury. His main legacy is from his interest in architecture, in particular his old home of Hampton Court Palace, which stands today.

Although the event was officially cancelled again this year due to health and safety concerns, around 500 loyal fans from Gloucestershire and as far away as New Zealand turned up to watch the action from the sidelines. Local lad Chris Anderson was the champion for another year running, and the atmosphere on the hill was fantastic despite the dreadful British weather. While there was some police presence on the day, the authorities were particularly friendly to members of the public who had feared they wouldn't even be allowed access to Cooper's Hill on foot. This annual cheeserolling event is famed for the steepness of its course and the hazards to the competitors as they hurtle downhill in pursuit of a Double Gloucester cheese. Because of the terrain, descent is fast, dangerous and exciting to watch -- expect a large crowd lining the hillside, protected from flying cheese by plastic barriers. Injuries to entrants are common as there are precipitous slopes, tussocks of grass and potentially slippery conditions to negotiate; the winner is the first to reach the bottom of the hill and will be very lucky to make their descent without falling on the way. After visiting the Evesham Vale Light Railway we took a trip to Toddington Station on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. Due to the landslip at Chicken Curve the Railway has been split, one section being steam hauled between Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse and the other being a DMU service from Toddington to as near as permitted to the landslip then back to Toddington with a five minute wait before the DMU then proceeds onwards onto the recently opened Laverton extension. This video focuses on the DMU service where in service was BR Class 117 Unit nos.51365 & 51407 which were on loan from the Plym Valley Railway. We see her at Toddington waiting to depart with the 1600 train to Laverton. We then see her departing Toddington heading south on the first part of the journey. Afterwards we move to a footbridge near Stanton where we see her heading north along the Laverton extension. Gloucestershire (
i/ˈɡlɒstərʃər/ GLOSS-tər-shər; abbreviated Glos.) is a county in South West England. The county comprises part of the Cotswold Hills, part of the flat fertile valley of the River Severn, and the entire Forest of Dean.
The county town is the city of Gloucester, and other principal towns include Cheltenham, Cirencester, Stroud, and Tewkesbury.
When considered as a ceremonial county, Gloucestershire borders the preserved county of Gwent in Wales (now Monmouthshire), and in England the ceremonial counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Somerset. Ceremonially, it includes the area covered by the South Gloucestershire unitary authority.
According to a 2002 campaign by the charity Plantlife, the county flower of Gloucestershire is the Wild Daffodil.[1]

Gloucestershire is a historic county mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in the 10th century, though the areas of Winchcombe and the Forest of Dean were not added until the late 11th century. Gloucestershire originally included the then "small town" of Bristol. The "local" rural community moved to the port city, (as Bristol was to become) and Bristol's population growth accelerated during the industrial revolution. Bristol became part of the administrative County of Avon in 1974.
Upon the abolition of Avon in 1996, the region north of Bristol became a unitary authority area of South Gloucestershire and is now part of the ceremonial county of Gloucestershire.
The official former postal county abbreviation was "Glos.", rather than the frequently used but erroneous "Gloucs." or "Glouc.".
In July 2007, Gloucestershire suffered the worst flooding in recorded British history, with tens of thousands of residents affected. The RAF conducted the largest peace time domestic operation in its history to rescue over 120 residents from flood affected areas. The damage was estimated at over £2 billion.[2]
The county recovered rapidly from the disaster, investing in attracting tourists to visit the many sites and diverse range of shops in the area.

Gloucestershire has mainly comprehensive schools with seven selective schools; two are in Stroud (Stroud High School for girls and Marling School for boys), one in Cheltenham (Pate's Grammar) and four in Gloucester (Sir Thomas Rich's and The Crypt for boys and The High School and Ribston Hall for girls). There are 42 state secondary schools, not including sixth form colleges, and 12 independent schools, including the renowned Cheltenham Ladies' College, Cheltenham College and Dean Close School. All but about two schools in each district have a sixth form, but the Forest of Dean only has two schools with sixth forms. All schools in South Gloucestershire have sixth forms.

Gloucestershire has one university, the University of Gloucestershire, one university college, the Royal Agricultural College, and four higher and further education colleges, Gloucestershire College, Cirencester College, Stroud College and the Royal Forest of Dean College. The cathedral of Gloucester, the magnificent abbey church of Tewkesbury, and the church of Cirencester with its great Perpendicular porch, are described under their separate headings. Of the abbey of Hailes near Winchcombe, founded by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, in 1246, little more than the foundations are left, but these have been excavated and interesting fragments have been brought to light.
Most of the old market towns have fine parish churches. At Deerhurst near Tewkesbury, and Bishop's Cleeve near Cheltenham, there are churches of special interest on account of the pre-Norman work they retain. The Perpendicular church at Lechlade is unusually perfect; and that at Fairford was built (c. 1500), according to tradition, to contain the remarkable series of stained-glass windows which are said to have been brought from the Netherlands. These are, however, adjudged to be of English workmanship, and are one of the finest series in the country.
Calcot Barn is an interesting relic of Kingswood Abbey. Thornbury Castle is a Tudor country house, the pretensions of which evoked the jealousy of Cardinal Wolsey against its builder, Edward Stafford, duke of Buckingham, who was beheaded in 1521. Near Cheltenham is the fine 15th-century mansion of Southam de la Bere, of timber and stone.[citation needed] Memorials of the de la Bere family appear in the church at Cleeve. The mansion contains a tiled floor from Hailes Abbey. At Great Badminton is the mansion and vast domain of the Beauforts (formerly of the Botelers and others), on the south-eastern boundary of the county. At Owlpen is one of the most picturesque Tudor manor houses set in a densely-wooded valley.
There are several royal residences in Gloucestershire, including Highgrove House, Gatcombe Park, and (formerly) Nether Lypiatt Manor.
An annual "cheese-rolling" event takes place at Cooper's Hill, near Brockworth and the Cotswold Games occurred within the county.

Gloucestershire's daily newspapers are The Citizen, which covers Gloucester, Stroud and the Forest of Dean, and the Gloucestershire Echo, which covers Cheltenham, Tewkesbury and the Cotswolds. The two daily papers, along with free weeklies The Forester, Stroud Life, The Gloucester News and The Cheltenham and Tewkesbury News, are all published by Northcliffe Media.[7] The Stroud News & Journal is a weekly paid-for newspaper based in Stroud. It is published in a tabloid format by Newsquest. Newsquest also produces the weekly Wilts and Glos Standard newspaper, which covers the southern and eastern parts of the county.
Radio stations in Gloucestershire include BBC Radio Gloucestershire and Heart Gloucestershire, and Total Star Gloucestershire. There are also several community radio stations including Gloucester FM, Radio Winchcombe, Forest of Dean Radio, and North Cotswold Community Radio.
Gloucestershire in popular culture[link]
There are two well-known accounts of childhood in rural Gloucestershire in the early 20th century, Laurie Lee's Cider With Rosie and Winifred Foley's A Child in the Forest. Part of Mrs. Craik's novel John Halifax, Gentleman is set in Enderley, a thinly disguised Amberley, where she lived at the time of writing.[8] Most of the book is set in Nortonbury, easily recognisable as Tewkesbury. The county has also been the setting for a number of high profile movies and TV series, including Die Another Day, Harry Potter and BBC TV series Butterflies.[9]
