Makhdoom Mohiuddin (Urdu: مخدوم محی الدین , Telugu : మఖ్దూం మొహియుద్దీన్) or Abu Sayeed Mohammad Makhdoom Mohiuddin Huzri (February 4, 1908 – August 25, 1969) was an Urdu poet and Marxist political activist of India. He was a distinguished revolutionary Urdu poet. On February 4 and 5, 2008, a slew of programmes were organized in Hyderabad to mark his birth centenary celebrations in which top writers like Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Vibhuti Narain Rai, scientists like P. M. Bhargava and Vice-Chancellor of Hyderabad University Syed E. Hasnain participated.^[1]

Early life[link]

Mohiuddin was born in the village of Andole in Medak district in the princely state of Hyderabad, India.

He earned a masters degree in 1936 from Osmania University. He founded the Progressive Writers Union in Hyderabad and was active with the Comrades Association and the Communist Party of India, and at the forefront of the 1946–1947 Telengana Rebellion against the Nizam of the erstwhile Hyderabad state.

Makhdoom grew up to become an Urdu language poet of incredible versatility. He is best known for his collection of poems Bisat-e-Raqs (The Dance Floor), for which he was awarded the 1969 Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu. His published works include an essay "Tagore" and his Poetry, a play, Hosh ke Nakhun (Unravelling), an adaptation of Shaw's Widowers' Houses, and a collection of prose essays. Bisat-e-Raqs is a complete collection of Makhdoom's verse including his two earlier collections Surkh Savera (The Red Dawn) 1944, and Gul-e-Tar (The Dewdrenched Rose) 1961

He is known as Shayar-e-Inquilab' ('Poet of the Revolution'). His ghazals and lyrics have been used in many Hindi films. Among his notable is the romantic ghazal: Ek Chameli Ke Mandve Taley and Phir Chhidi Baat, Baat PhooloN Ki.

Makhdoom had a mixed childhood. His father died when he was just six years and mother got married to another man. His paternal uncle took over his guardianship and ensured that he gets the best education and treated him fairly. Makhdoom was very kind to children and loved them a lot, since he got orphaned at very young age probably he very well knew the feelings of a child. He got his school and religious education in his village and later on moved to Hyderabad city for higher education (Bachelors and Masters Degree). He settled down in Hyderabad after completing his higher education and got involved in the fight for "Free India" against the British rule . He was the founder of Communist Party in Andhra Pradesh (southern) Indian state. Therefore he is also called as "Freedom Fighter" of India and has also rallied against the then Monarchy of the Princely State of Hyderabad to merge with India. The then ruler of Hyderbad, Mir Osman Ali Khan (Nizam) had ordered to kill him for awkening people for freedom and get rid of the Nawab or the princely rule.

He got married to Rabia Begum and had three children with her. The elder among his children is daughter Zakia Begum followed by two sons. The first son is Nusrath Mohiuddin, ex-employee of State Bank of Hyderabad, a well-known poet, a member of CPI, secretary of Insaf Tehreek. The second son is Zafar Mohiuddin, works for Singareni colleries in Khammam district, Andhra Pradesh.

His daughter is the eldest among his children and Makhdoom had special love and affection for his daughter. She could not complete her school education due to pressure from elder members of her family as her father was always busy with trade union meetings campaigning for his communist party and public life. But he always presented her gifts whenever he returns from a foreign trip. She too loved her father very much and she died due to kidney failure and long illness on August 6, 2010.She was married to Syed Abdul Rahim Quadri and had three daughters and three sons. The eldest daughter is Manzoor Fatima, Farrukh Rahim Quadri(eldest son),Farida Ashraf Fatima, Tooba Anjuman Fatima, Anwar Rahim Quadri and Raoof Rahim Quadri. Makhdoom was very fond of photography and had a wealth of family photos.

Nusrath Mohiuddin got married to Naseera Sultana in 1968. They have two daughters: the eldest Ayesha Siddiqua has a girl child named Nida Un Naser. The second Asma Siddiqua Khan has a daughter Tahniyath Unissa also known as Maryam and a son Mohammed Laiq Ali Khan alias Omer. Zafar mohiuddin has three daughters and a son. Their names are: Firasat Fatima (elder daughter), Aslam Mohiuddin (son), Afshan, Juveria.

Makhdoom died with a massive heart attack while attending a convention held by Communist Party High Command in New Delhi in 1969. He is remembered all over India for his dedicated work towards the upliftment of poor and fighting for their cause. Though he was the Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Housing Board for five years but he never owned a house.

He was also a member of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council for 5 years and the most popular political leader across India. Among his close friends are: Raj Bahadur Gaur, Syed Sibte Hassan, Saher Ludhianwi, Shakeel Badayuni, Sajjad Zaheer, S A Dange. He had travelled almost all European countries that exist under the umbrella of Russia and also visited China. He also met Yuri Gagarin when he visited Moscow and wrote a poem on him.

In jail they were given very worse kind of meal. Once the party members found some insects in their meal, Makhdoom commented: Tell your jailor that we all here are vegetarian, we don't eat this non-vegetarian meal.

In jail he met Aamir, who was sent to jail by his lover's family mambers. He requested Makhdoom to help. Makhdoom replied: We should now start a lovers union, and the slogan should be, Lovers of the world, Unite! Later in jail Aamir learned about the Telengana Movement and marxism and later on joined the struggle.

Ali Sardar Jafri (Hindi: अली सरदार जाफरी, Urdu: علی سردار جعفری; November 29, 1913 – August 1, 2000)^[1] was an Urdu writer, poet, critic and film lyricist from India.

Early life and education[link]

Ali Sardar Jafri was born in an aristocratic family in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, where he spent his formative years.^[2]

His early influences were Josh Malihabadi, lyricist Jigar Muradabadi and Firaq Gorakhpuri. In 1933, he joined Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and soon got exposed to Communist ideology, subsequently he was expelled from the University in 1936, for ‘political reasons’. Eventually he graduated from Zakir Husain College (Delhi College), Delhi University in 1938, though his post graduation studies at Lucknow University ended prematurely following his arrest during 1940-41 for writing anti-War poems, and taking part in Congress led political activities as Secretary of the university's Students' Union.^[3]

Literary career[link]

Ali Sardar Jafri published his first collection of short stories titled, Manzil (Destination) in 1938,^[4] which started his literary career, and his first collection of poems, Parvaz (Flight) came out in 1944. In 1936, he presided over the first conference of Progressive Writers' Movement in Lucknow, a stature he maintain for the rest of his life.^[5] In 1939, he became co-editor of Naya Adab, a literary journal devoted to the Progressive Writers' Movement, and the journal continued til 1949.^[3]

Ali Sardar Jafri was involved in several social, political and literary movements. On 20 January 1949, he was arrested at Bhiwandi, for holding of a (now banned) Progressive Urdu writers' conference, despite warnings from Morarji Desai, the Chief Minister of Bombay State; three months later, he was rearrested.

His important works as a lyricist include Dharti Ke Lal (1946) and Pardesi (1957) .

Between 1948 to 1978, he published eight poetry collections, which include, Nai Duniya Ko Salaam (Salute to the New World), (1948), Khoon Ki Lakeer, Amn Ka Sitara, Asia Jaag Utha (Asia Awakes) (1951), Patthar Ki Deewar (The Stone Door) (1953), Ek Khwab Aur, Pairahan-i-Sharar (The Robe of Sparks) (1965); and Lahu Pukarta Hai (The Blood Calls) (1965), which were followed by Awadh ki khak-i-haseen, Subhe Farda, Mera Safar (My journey) and last anthology titled as Sarhad, which then Prime Minister of India carried with him on his bus journey to Lahore. In fact, Sarhad is an audio album dedicated to Indo-Pak amity produced by Squadron Leader Anil Sehgal and sung and composed by "Bulbul-e-Kashmir" Seema Anil Sehgal. Indian Prime Minister A B Vajpayee created history when he presented Sarhad, as a national gift, to his erstwhile Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharief, during the historic Lahore Summit, 20–21 February 1999.

During his literary career spanning five decades, Ali Sardar Jafri, also edited anthologies of Kabir, Mir, Ghalib and Meera Bai with his introductions, wrote two plays for the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA), produced a documentary film, Kabir, Iqbal and Freedom, and two television serials, including a 18 parts, Kahkashan, based on lives and works of noted Urdu poets, and Mehfil-e-yaaran in which he interviewed people from different walks of life, and his autobiography. He was also the editor and publisher of one of the leading and most respected literary Urdu magazines of the sub-continent, Guftagu

He died on 1 August 2000 in Mumbai, and on his first death anniversary in 2001, a book "Ali Sardar Jafri: The Youthful Boatman of Joy",edited by Squadron Leader Anil Sehgal,a close associate of the poet, was released.^[6]

He is only the third Urdu poet to receive the Jnanpith Award (1997) after Firaq Gorakhpuri (1969) and Qurratulain Hyder (1989). He has also been conferred with several other honours and awards including Padma Shri in 1967, Gold medal from the Pakistan Government for Iqbal studies (1978); Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy Award for poetry, Makhdoom Award, Faiz Ahmad Faiz Award, Iqbal Samman of the Madhya Pradesh government and the Sant Dyaneshwar Award of the Maharashtra government.

The Aligarh Muslim University had conferred a D.Litt. on him in 1986, fifty years after he was expelled from the University.^[3] His writings have been translated into many Indian and foreign languages.^[8]

Farooq Sheikh or Farooque Sheikh (born 25 March 1948) is an Indian actor, philanthropist and a popular television presenter. He is best known for his films during the 1970s and 1980s. His major contribution was in Parallel Cinema or the New Indian Cinema. He has worked with directors like Satyajit Ray, Muzaffar Ali, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Ketan Mehta.^[1]

He has acted in many serials and shows on television and performed on stage in famous productions such as Tumhari Amrita (1992), alongside Shabana Azmi, directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, and presented the TV show, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai (Season 1).^[2] He won the 2010 National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for Lahore.^[3]

Shaikh was born to Mustafa Shaikh, a Mumbai lawyer and Farida Shaikh in Amroli in Gujarat's Surat District. His family were Zamindaris, and he grew up in luxurious surroundings. He was the eldest of five children.^[4]

He went to St. Mary's School, Mumbai and then to St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. He studied law at Siddharth College of Law.^[5]

In his early days, he was active in theatre, doing plays with IPTA and with well-known directors like Sagar Sarhadi. His first major film role was in the 1973 film Garam Hawa. He went onto act in several notable films such as Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khiladi (Chess Players) (1977), Noorie (1979), Chashme Buddoor (1981) and Kissi Se Na Kehna (1983). He formed a successful pair with Deepti Naval.

In the 1990s he acted in fewer films and made his last few film appearance in Saas Bahu Aur Sensex (2008) and Lahore (2009), for which he won the 2010 National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In the late 90s, Farooq Sheikh acted in a number of television serials. Chamatkar on Sony and Ji Mantriji on Star plus are among the few.

Supriya Pathak Kapoor (born 7 January 1961) is an Indian actress hailing from a long line of performers. She is famous for her role in the Indian sitcoms Khichdi and Idhar Udhar.^[1][2]

Supriya Pathak is daughter of Dina Pathak, a well known character actress famous for playing mother and grandmother roles during the 1980s and 1990s. Her sister Ratna Pathak Shah is also an actress, who is married to actor Naseeruddin Shah. Supriya is married to actor Pankaj Kapoor with whom she has a daughter and son. Her step son is the famous Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor.

Supriya began her career with the critically acclaimed 1981 film Kalyug which was followed by roles in many more critically acclaimed films such as Vijeta (1982), Bazaar (1982), Masoom (1983) and Mirch Masala (1985). Talat Aziz (born 11th Nov, 1956) is a popular ghazal singer from Hyderabad, India.^[1]

Early life[link]

Born in Hyderabad, India to Abdul Azeem Khan and Sajida Abid, a famous Urdu writer and poet. He went to Hyderabad Public School till the 12th standard when he finished his ISC and then joined The Indian Institute of Management and Commerce for his B'Com(Hons) Course.

His family loved fine arts and used to organize Mehfils in their house, inviting artists and poets like Jagjit Singh Jan Nisaar Akhtar the father of the famous writer Javed Akhtar to name a few. This greatly influenced him and started learning music from an early age. He is Sania Mirza's uncle.

Talat Aziz took his initial training in music from Kirana Gharana. He was trained primarily by Ustad Samad Khan and later by Ustad Fayaz Ahmed who were famous classical music singers.

After the initial training, Talat decided to learn music from music maestro Mehdi Hassan. On many occasions, like on a concert tour of the US and Canada in 1986 he shared the same stage with him on concerts in India and abroad.

His first major performance was in Hyderabad at a place called King Kothi. He sang before a crowd of over 5,000. He sung Kaise Sukoon Paoon and some ghazals by noted shaayars of Hyderabad. Though he was nervous at his first performance in front of audience yet he performed well.

After his graduation he moved to Bombay in 1976 on a suggestion from Jagjit Singh. He also trained under classical music Ustad Samaad Khan and Faiyaz Ahmed Khan. And for his ghazal training he became a disciple of Mehdi Hassan in 1978. With the help of Jagjit he released his first album in 1979, Jagjit Singh Presents Talat Aziz. But for several years he was to struggle for a living. Talat also sang some ghazals in films like Umrao Jaan and Bazaar, which were super-hit.

Talat has also composed music for TV serials and has also acted in several of them. He composed music for teleserials to name a few like Deewar, Baaz, Adhikaar, Ghutan, Sailaab, Aashirwaad and the magnum opus, Noorjehan. His acting was appreciated in serials like Sahil, Manzil,, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayee and Noorjehan a TV serial written by Nida Fazli. Talat released many albums like Jagjit Singh presents Talat Aziz, Talat Aziz live,Images A team Come True Lehren, Ehsaas, Suroor, Saughaat,Tasavvur, Manzil, Storms, Dhadkan, Shahkaar, Mehboob,Khubsoorat,Irshaad, Khushnuma, to name a few with his latest offering in 2009 Caravan e Ghazal in which Sonu Niigaam also participated in a duet 'Qurbaton mein bhi' a ghazal written by Ahmed Faraaz

The singer was the ghazal artiste to release a ghazal music video of Tasavvur, in 1987 when a video album was not even thought of .He is often seen on the small screen in various roles as a music judge. However, his fans would love to see him on the silver screen too. He worked in a film in 1990. It was Mahesh Bhatt's `Dhun' opposite Sangeeta Bijlani. The film never got released for various reasons but the music was released by HMV in 1991 and was a great hit of that time featuring tracks like ' Main Aatma tu Parmaatma' a bhajan sung as a duet with none another than Mehdi Hassan and Talat and other tracks like 'Yaad aane waale' Laagi prem dhun laagi' which became a rage with the young crowd

The advent of the ghazal as a popular genre began in the late seventies and became a rage in the 80" when artists like Talat Aziz used to sell out albums in the hundreds of thousands of units.

Begum Akhtar had her following of ghazal lovers. Then came Mehdi Hassan's, Ghulam Ali who was equally well known.On this side of the border, the Indian couple Jagjit and Chitra Singh, the ghazal exponents did live shows and sang at private mehfils. During that period Sanjeev Kohli,son of Madan Mohan, discovered a singer called Talat Aziz, who was young, good-looking, malleable and above all, he had a good voice. Jagjit Singh had already heard Talat sing at a Mehfil in Hyderabad, so he agreed to compose his first album.In 1979 his first album titled "Jagjit Singh presents Talat Aziz" came out which was phenomenal success thus gave him a launch pad for his meteoric rise. Then came the classic ghazal ' zindagi jab bhi teri bazm mein " from Umrao Jaan composed by Khayyam the ghazal from Bazaar ' Phir chidi raat baat phoolon ki' a duet with none other than the legend Lata Mangeshkar and the iconic nazm 'Aaina mujh se meri' from Mahesh Bhatt's film Daddy.

Talat Aziz has been singing in concerts for over three decades and has traveled the globe with his sell out performances . He completed his 25 Years Silver Anniversary with the launch of a special audio and video album in 2004 at the NCPA Mumbai where the veritable who's who of the music industry were present and the ones like Mehdi Hasan and Lata Mangeshkar who could not make it sent in their messages on video and a special documentary on his life was screened. This was released by Universal Music India as a special commemorative DVD with the audio cd pack of two released by Times Music.

Since then he has many albums . He is equally versatile while singing a popular sufi number like "Damadam mast Kalandar" or the soul stirring rendition of "Aaina Mujhse Meri" from the film Daddy. Between 1979 and 1984 he was the top artist recording for Music India Company. In 1984, he joined HMV, the giant recording company.He also worked with Venus Records for a brief period and then released albums with Universal Music India and the latest with Saregama Music.
