The Open Road London (1927)
London is the last stop in an epic trip across Britain filmed in remarkable early colour. London was the final stop in a marathon journey around Britain filmed as a series of cinema travelogues. Pioneering filmmaker Claude Friese-Greene brought these picture-postcard scenes to life with a specially-devised colour film process. Credit: BFI

Solvay Physics Conference 1927
www.FreeScienceLectures.com The most known people who participated in the conference were Ervin Schrodinger, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Auguste Piccard, Paul Dirac, Max Born, Wolfgang Pauli, Louis de Broglie, Marie Curie, Hendrik Lorentz, Albert Einstein and others. The film opens with quick shots of Erwin Schrodinger and Niels Bohr. Auguste Piccard of the University of Brussels follows and then the camera re-focuses on Schrodinger and Bohr. Schrodinger who developed wave mechanics never agreed with Bohr on quantum mechanics. Solvay gave Heisenberg an opportunity to discuss his new uncertainty principle theory. Max Born's statistical interpretation of the wave function ended determinism in atomic world. These men - Bohr, Heisenberg, Kramers, Dirac and Born together with Born represent the founding fathers of quantum mechanics. Louis de Broglie wrote his dissertation on the wave nature of matter which Schrodinger used as basis for wave mechanics. Albert Einstein whose famous response to Born's statistical interpretation of wave function was "God does not play dice." Twenty-nine physicists, the main quantum theorists of the day, came together to discuss the topic "Electrons and Photons". Seventeen of the 29 attendees were or became Nobel Prize winners. Following is a "home movie" shot by Irving Langmuir, (the 1932 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry). It captures 2 minutes of an intermission in the proceedings. Twenty-one of the 29 attendees are on the film. --- It's Never ...

Col. John Boyd (1927-1997)
For Erie native John Boyd, an early career as an Air Force pilot led to greater renown as a military strategist. Boyd entered the Air Force during World War II with a love of flying. He later fought in the Korean War. But he is best-known for developing the strategy credited with winning the 1990-91 Gulf War. That theory, the OODA Loop -- which stands for "observe, orient, decide, act" -- is aimed at making good decisions faster than the opponent. While Boyd's daughter, Mary Ellen Boyd, who lives in Virginia, said her father's experience in war helped him as a strategist, she is heartened that his theories have applications beyond the battlefield. The OODA Loop, for example, is often cited as a strategy in business, law and sports. "I like that it isn't just about death and destruction," Mary Ellen Boyd said. "His work applies all over the place." She cited her father's ability to "hyperfocus" as a factor in his success. He would study at home, Mary Ellen Boyd said, and nothing else occurring in the house would bother him. "He just focused," she said.

1927 - The Animals and Children took to the Streets
Founded by performance poet Suzanne Andrade and animator Paul Barritt, 1927 began life on the outskirts of the cabaret scene. The company's first show, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, was a hit in Edinburgh in 2007 and toured widely from New York to Sri Lanka. Now supported by BAC (Battersea Arts Centre), 1927 is best known for its playful mix of live performance and projected animation. With darkly comic storytelling, the company explores contemporary issues inspired by the macabre nature of fairy stories, silent films and Edwardian illustration. 1927's second production The Animals and Children took to the Streets tells the story of Agnes Eaves and her daughter who live in Bayou Mansions, a decrepit tenement block with a sinister air. The imaginary setting emphasises the timeless nature of its themes, as the characters navigate government oppression and the paranoia of inner-city life. Visually inventive and filled with live music and song, this show doesn't rely on the English language and is suitable for a wide age range. 'A jaw-droppingly clever and gloriously subversive parable... 1927 conjure a world so complete it feels as if you've fallen down a rabbit hole' The Guardian 'A mind-blowingly beautiful piece of theatre' Time Out 'Macabre, musically ingenious and graphically glorious... Anyone interested in the theatre should see this company now' The Observer www.britishcouncil.org/edinburghshowcase Image © Nick Flintoff

John McCarthy (1927-2011): Artificial Intelligence (complete) - Thinking Allowed -Jeffrey Mishlove
www.thinkingallowed.com The science of artificial intelligence is a program to accomplish the Socratic injunction, "Know Thyself." The late John McCarthy, Ph.D., invented LISP, the major language today used for artificial intelligence. Here he discusses the history of artificial intelligence and the future role which non-monotonic reasoning will play in enabling computers to simulate the human mind.

YES! WE HAVE NO BANANAS 1927 Edisonic Beethoven Diamond Disc Phonograph
TA Edison's response to Victor's Credenza was the Edisonic Phonograph. Especially designed to play the new Electric Edison Diamond Discs, the Beethoven sports the new Edisonic reproducer and the longest horn on any Diamond Disc Machine. Check out more photos and description of the machine here: myvintagetv.com Introduced at the end of 1927, the Edisonic Beethoven was Edison's last acoustic Diamond Disc phonograph. Its short production run of only 18 months and sluggist sales make it one of the rarest Edison Phonographs. The improved acoustic design of the Edisonic makes it the best sounding Diamond Disc Machine, with a fat, thumping bass and loud volume. Recorded from an original Diamond Disc: 1923: Green Brothers Novelty Orchestra: Yes! We have no Bananas A word to the sound: I have recorded the actual record on the machine with an external condensor mike and spliced it into the video. Hence you will sometimes notice jumps in sound quality. Volume has been adjusted to maximum level without clipping and distortions. No peak volume compression or other sound manipulations have been applied. If you find that the volume of my videos are lower than on other videos, the reason may be the absence of artificial compression and volume boosting. Enjoy. Check out more great tunes and amazing vintage phonographs at My YouTube Videos: www.youtube.com More about this and other machines on my Changer Website myvintagetv.com
