1812 Festival Overture, Op. 49
This is a performance of the 1812 Festival Overture, Op. 49. The performers on this recording are the Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra being conducted by the late German conductor Jansug Kakhidze. This piece was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in commemoration of the Battle of Borodino: an encounter on September 7th, 1812, where the French, led by Napoelon Bonaparte, were, to an extent, held by the Russians, led by Mikhail Kutuzov. The battle ultimately resulted in a Pyrrhic victory for Napoleon and marked an important turning point in the French invasion of Russia which led to the invaders eventually retreating due to depleted resources and exposure to the harsh environments. During parts of the overture you can hear the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, bounce in and out. This, coupled with the more Russian sounding sections suggests the struggle between the Russians and the French. The climax to this piece is stunning and I think you'd find it very hard to deny being moved by it. I rank the finale up there with pieces such as Gustav Mahler's 5th Symphony in C-Sharp Minor: My favorite piece of classical music. Take care and enjoy.

1812 Teaser: Kutuzov
A teaser of the style I'm having my 1812 animation in, with the sketches and film effect on. This is just a short scene but the whole thing will be this style hopefully. Sketches by Naomi Allen. The animation is based on Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture which tells the story of Napoleon's failed attempt to invade Russia in the respective year. This scene is of the Russian Supreme Commander, Mikhail Kutuzov, and his soldiers. See my Digital Media blog for more joeldavidmurray.wordpress.com This scene is created with a mixture of Adobe Photoshop and After Effects.

Battle of Borodino
The Battle of Borodino (Russian: Бородинское сражение, Borodinskoe srazhenie; French: Bataille de la Moskova), fought on September 7, 1812, was the largest and bloodiest single-day action of the French invasion of Russia and all Napoleonic Wars, involving more than 250000 troops and resulting in at least 70000 casualties. The French Grande Armée under Emperor Napoleon I attacked the Imperial Russian Army of General Mikhail Kutuzov near the village of Borodino, west of the town of Mozhaysk, and eventually captured the main positions on the battlefield, but failed to destroy the Russian army despite heavy losses. About a third of Napoleon's soldiers were killed or wounded; Russian losses were also heavy, but her casualties could be replaced since large forces of militia were already with the Russian Army and replacement depots which were close by had already been gathering and training troops. The battle itself ended with the Russian Army out of position. The state of exhaustion of the French forces and lack of information on the Russian Army's condition led Napoleon to remain on the battlefield with his army instead of the forced pursuit that had marked other campaigns that he had conducted in the past. The entirety of Napoleon's Imperial Guard, however, was still available to his disposition and in refusing to implement it he lost his singular chance to destroy the Russian army. The battle at Borodino was a pivotal point in the campaign, as it was the last offensive ...

Napoleon bloodiest Campaign. part 1- Russia hell
The French invasion of Russia of 1812 (also known as the Patriotic War of 1812, Russian: Отечественная война 1812 года) was a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars. It reduced the French and allied invasion forces (the Grande Armée) to a tiny fraction of their initial strength and triggered a major shift in European politics as it dramatically weakened French hegemony in Europe. The reputation of Napoleon I as an undefeated military genius was severely shaken, while the French Empire's former allies, at first Prussia, then Austria, broke their alliance with France and switched camps, which triggered the War of the Sixth Coalition. The campaign began on 24 June 1812, when Napoleon's forces crossed the river Neman. Napoleon aimed to compel Emperor of Russia Alexander I to remain in the Continental Blockade of the United Kingdom; an official aim was to remove the threat of a Russian invasion of Poland. Napoleon named the campaign a Second Polish War; the Russian government proclaimed a Patriotic War. Half a million strong, the Grande Armée marched through Western Russia, winning a number of relatively minor engagements and a major battle at Smolensk on August 16-18. However, on that same day, the right wing of the Russian Army, under the command of General Peter Wittgenstein, stopped part of the French Army, led by Marshal Nicolas Oudinot, in the Battle of Polotsk. This prevented the French marching on the Russian capital at Saint Petersburg; the fate of the war had to be ...

Prokofiev: War and Peace opera 1961 (part 3)
Prokofiev's opera War and Peace, directed by Alexander Melik-Pashayev and recorded at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1961. Included in the cast are: Pavel Lisitsian as Napoleon; Artur Eizen as French Officer Captain Rambal; Nikolay Timofeyevich Gres (Николай Тимофеевич Гресь) as General Kutuzov's assistant. This opera has been uploaded in memory of Nic Gres (1920-2003), and that is why the still pictures are of him. The pictures do not relate to the plot of the opera. Sorry the credits at the end say "French office" instead of "French officer" - my typo. Nic Gres playlist on Youtube: www.youtube.com Nic Gres in Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org

The Battle of Krasnoi, Napoleon Total War
"Revenge on me, and I shall be avenged." The Battle of Krasnoi (Krasny) (November 15 to 18, 1812) was a series of skirmishes fought in the final stage of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. This encounter was noteworthy because of the heavy losses inflicted on the remnants of the Grande Armée by the Russians under General Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov. Lacking sufficient artillery, cavalry and supplies to wage battle, Napoleon's object at Krasnoi was to collect his scattered troops and to resume his retreat. Despite the vast superiority of his forces, Kutusov refrained from launching a full-scale offensive during the four days of fighting. At 3 pm on November 18, Ney's III Corps finally made contact with Miloradovich, who had posted 12000 troops on a hill overlooking a deep ravine. Ney had 8000 combatants and 7000 stragglers under his command at this point. Believing that Davout was still in Krasny, directly behind Miloradovich's columns, Ney turned down a Russian offer of honorable surrender, and boldy attempted to ram his way through the enemy. The dogged French troops then succeeded in piercing the first two lines of Russian infantry. The third line, however, proved indominatable, and at the decisive moment, the terrible defeat of the III Corps was thorough enough to induce the chivalrous Miloradovich to extend another honorable surrender to Ney. Again, Ney refused to submit, and with 2000 refugees—all that remained of his corps, the Russians counterattacked. A collection ...
