Hutu Muslims saved Tutsis during Rwandan genocide - 8 Apr 09
Rwanda has been marking the 15th anniversary of the country's genocide when according to the government 1.2 million people were killed, the UN says 800000 died, most of those murdered were ethnic Tutsis. During that genocide, tens of thousands of Tutsis fled into Muslim mosques to escape from the machete-wielding Hutu mobs. And their lives were spared because many Hutus believed Muslims were evil and were afriad to go into mosques. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege tells the story of survivors who narrowly escaped death, and the Islamic resistance to the genocide.

Congolese Army Targets Hutu Rebels
The Congolese army has deployed to South Kivu province to begin operations aimed at forcing out Hutu rebels. Thousands of people are fleeing their homes and heading south to avoid the conflict. The Congolese national army (the FARDC) have extended their operations against Rwandan Hutus (the FDLR) in the South Kivu region. It follows a FARDC and Rwanda troop joint operation in January in North Kivu against the same group, who are seen as the cause of 15 years of conflict in the eastern Congo. In retaliation Hutu rebels, some from the former Rwandan military and others from the extremist militia who orchestrated the 1994 genocide, are committing acts of violence against civilians. Lufuno Ngnaniami, fled his village due to the violence. [Lufuno Ngnaniami, Internally Displaced Person]: "They rape women, they kill people, they steal our crops and destroy our fields." To the civilian population of eastern Congo it seems not to matter who is attacking who, the result has always been misery. Examples of the casualties of this conflict are evident at a hospital in Bunyakiri. Charlotte Safi, a patient at the hospital, and her family, were attacked in Busunguri when Hutu rebels fired into their home, injuring four family members, including her 18-year-old daughter. Chris Baguma, International Medical Corp Project Manger explained a further tragic consequence for the daughter. [Chris Baguma, Project manager, International Medical Corps]: "She had a miscarriage following the emotional ...

euronews cinema - Kinyarwanda, a Tutsi-Hutu Love Story
www.euronews.net Kinyarwanda traces a series of interlinked stories about ordinary people living through the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Alrick Brown, the director, said: "It's our belief that as much as it is important to show the statistics and the death and the horror in Rwanda, you prevent these things, and you prevent war, by showing life and love and by humanizing people, as opposed to dehumanizing them and showing seas of faceless bodies."

Synopsis
