How Oil Drilling Works On Discovery's Dirty Jobs
In 2008 alone, the United States produced an estimated 4.9 million barrels of crude oil per day and imported 9.8 million barrels per day from other countries [source: US Energy Information Administration]. This oil gets refined into gasoline, kerosene, heating oil and other products. To keep up with our consumption, oil companies must constantly look for new sources of petroleum, as well as improve the production of existing wells. How does a company go about finding oil and pumping it from the ground? You may have seen images of black crude oil gushing out of the ground, or seen an oil well in movies and television shows like "Giant," "Oklahoma Crude," "Armageddon" and "Beverly Hillbillies." But modern oil production is quite different from the way it's portrayed in the movies. Source of video: science.howstuffworks.com Video Rights: dsc.discovery.com DIRTY JOBS profiles the unsung American laborers who make their living in the most unthinkable — yet vital — ways. Our brave host and apprentice Mike Rowe introduces you to a hardworking group of men and women who overcome fear, danger and sometimes stench and overall ickiness to accomplish their daily tasks.

Eagle Ford & Bakken Shale Oil: The New Rush For Black Gold
One of America's biggest energy challenges is foreign oil dependency. The US imports about half the oil it uses, putting the nation's energy security at risk and costing hundreds of billions of dollars per year. New drilling innovations are unlocking vast new reserves and boosting local economies. But is the new drilling also forcing a tough choice between oil and water in drought-stricken Texas? This week, energyNOW! explores the latest US oil boom. Black Gold From Shale Rock The combination of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing in shale rock formations is opening up previously unrecoverable oil, just as those technologies did for natural gas. It's driving a boom in US energy production and creating bright spots in a tough economy across America. Correspondent Patty Kim visits Williston, North Dakota, the site of America's largest shale oil field and heart of the new oil rush, to check out life in an oil boom town. Is The Oil Boom Worsening The Texas Drought? Texas is home to America's second largest shale oil field, and business is booming - production has skyrocketed from under 1000 barrels a day in 2004 to more than 8 million so far in 2011. But hydraulic fracturing in shale rock requires millions of gallons of water, a precious resource during one of the worst droughts in the state's history. Anchor Thalia Assuras visits the Eagle Ford shale in Texas to see how rapidly expanding water use by energy companies is impacting the state. Interview: EPA ...

North Dakota Oilfield Oil Well Blows Oil 100 Feet Into The Air
A crew working over a well in North Dakota get a suprise when hundreds of gallons of sweet crude oil get them all soaking wet. Oil squirts into their eyes, ears and noses. The work is hard, the hours are long, but the pay is usually worth it all.

We've Struck Oil in Oklahoma....June 2, 2012
'Mystery Oil Well Leaking Into Washington County Creek.' "WASHINGTON COUNTY, Oklahoma - Oil from a 100 year-old well, is spilling into a Green Country creek. State workers are trying to pinpoint the exact leak's location along Coon Creek northeast of Dewey. It's unusual because oil wells aren't drilled in creeks, and this well was never intended to be in such a place. But over time, erosion pushed back the creek banks, essentially swallowing the well. It's a messy and mucky mystery, John Hurd, a field inspector with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, says there's an oil well somewhere in the area that was abandoned possibly a century ago. Hurd says he suspects at some point the well quit producing enough oil to turn a profit, so the operators shut it down and took every bit of equipment with them. He also believes they didn't cap the well. "What we end up with is a hole in the ground which makes this 50 times harder to find, because we've gone over this whole thing with metal detectors," Hurd said. The leak was spotted about three weeks ago and ever since workers have been trying to unearth the well. Hurd says it could be buried some 600 feet under the earth's surface. "They drilled into that, now it's beginning to pressure up and it's pushing the fluids to the surface and they're breaking out in shale," Hurd said." Read more: www.newson6.com

Basa Resources East Texas Oil Well
This oil well is owned and operated by Basa Resources. The well in located in New London, Texas. It is being pumped by a Lufkin 114D pumping unit powered by an electric motor. It is producing out of the historic East Texas Oil Field from the Woodbine Formation at a depth of 3600 feet. The East Texas Oil Field is driven by a water flood and produces mainly water with skim oil. Wells in this field are generally produce around 150 to 1000 barrels of fluid a day. All the produced water is re-injected back into the same Woodbine formation by either the operator's injection wells or by the East Texas Salt Water Disposal Company. New London, Texas November 2011

East Texas Woodbine Oil Well Longview, Texas
This oil well is located in Longview, Texas on the RK Johnson "P" lease. It is being pumped by a Lufkin pumping unit. It is producing out of the East Texas Woodbine Oil Field from 3600'. This well was drilled in 1932 by Mid Continent Drilling Company. For decades, it was operated by Phillips Petroleum Company then sold to independents. I had new 4.5" casing installed in 2011. The well is now owned and operated by Southlake Operating LLC. Longview, Texas May 2012

Well Oil be [Wheels on fire]!
I popped out on Saturday morning to film tug 071 on the 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey empties service when 66070 & 66014 on 6B13 caught me a little off guard and had to wait for the camera to warm up. Shortly after 60071 came into view. As I was filming I became aware of smoke from midway along train (in the distance it looked like the engine exhaust) as the offending tank passed under the footbridge there was one of the most disgusting smells rising. If you have ever smelt burning brakes then you'll know what I mean. I carried on filming then became aware that the train was stopping in the station, so a quick drive there ensued only to find the station had been evacuated and the Fire brigade on there way. Nearly an hour later the train was allowed to crawl the half mile or so to Alstone lane loop, again with the Fire brigade in attendance.

Oil Well Abandonment - Andersen Environmental
In various regions throughout the United States, including Southern California, oil exploration was prevalent in the previous century, as well as today. Although existing oil wells are essentially the responsibility of the oil companies, some oil fields have long been abandoned by oil exploration companies, along with their history. In such cases developers and/or owners of said properties may be faced with uncertainties and adverse property conditions due to improper abandonment by the oil company based on current abandonment standards. Such adverse conditions may thwart development, create a hazardous situation, and ultimately adversely affect the monetary worth of the property. www.andersenenviro.com
