Anahit Misak "Ana" Kasparian^[1] (Western Armenian: Անահիտ Միսաք Գասպարյան; Western Armenian pronunciation: [ɑnɑˈhid miˈsɑkʰ kʰɑsbɑˈɾjɑn]) ^[2]; born July 7, 1986) is an Armenian American co-host and producer for the online news show The Young Turks. Kasparian began working as a fill-in producer for The Young Turks in 2007.^[3] She also appears as on the TV version of the show The Young Turks that airs on the Current TV Network.

Ana was born on July 7, 1986 the daughter of Western Armenia immigrant parents. Kasparian graduated from California State University, Northridge in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts, Journalism (BAJ). Kasparian has worked with AOL News, YouTube, TidalTv and On Point. She also worked in news production at CBS radio affiliate KNX (AM) in Los Angeles.^[4] In addition to being the host of The Young Turks, Ana Kasparian appears frequently on the English version of the Russian-based channel RT and RT America.^[5] In 2007, Kasparian became the producer and co-host of the progressive talk radio on Sirius XM Satellite Radio and now internet show/TV Show The Young Turks/The Young Turks with Cenk Uygur on where she functions as commentator on pop culture and celebrity gossip.^[6] She completed her Master of Political Science in political science in 2010.^[3]

Cenk Kadir Uygur (Turkish pronunciation: [ˈdʒɛŋk ˈujɡur]; born March 21, 1970), is the main host and co-founder of the progressive^[2] Internet and talk radio show, The Young Turks (TYT).^[3][4] A naturalized U.S. citizen, Uygur was born in Turkey and raised from age eight in the United States. He worked as an attorney in Washington D.C. and New York before beginning his career as a political commentator. Originally a moderate Republican, he has since become a staunch critic of both the Republican and Democratic parties and has adopted more progressive and liberal views.^[5][6]

In addition to hosting TYT, Uygur appeared on MSNBC as a political commentator in 2010, later hosting a weeknight commentary show on the channel for nearly six months—until the time slot was given to Al Sharpton.^[7] Shortly after leaving MSNBC, Uygur secured a show on Current TV that began airing on December 5, 2011 before Countdown with Keith Olbermann.^[8]

Early life, education, and career[link]

Uygur was born in Istanbul, Turkey and emigrated with his family to the United States when he was eight years old.^[9] He grew up in East Brunswick Township, New Jersey and graduated from East Brunswick High School. He attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania where he majored in management^[10] and was on the Student Activities Council representing the Turkish Students Association.^[11] He also earned a J.D. from Columbia Law School^[12] and worked as an associate attorney at the law firms of Drinker Biddle & Reath in Washington, D.C. and Hayes & Liebman in New York City.^[13]

Uygur first appeared as a talk show host on a weekend radio show on WWRC in Washington, D.C. and on WRKO in Boston. He later wrote for, produced, and appeared on the WAMI-TV news show The Times in Miami, then started The Young Turks on Sirius Satellite Radio.^[14]

Political views[link]

Early years (1980s–1990s)[link]

While in college, he wrote a column in the Daily Pennsylvanian criticizing affirmative action recruiting at the university and suggesting that all students should be "judged on their merits rather than their physical characteristics."^[10] He supported the pro-life position on the abortion issue, criticized the radical aspects of the feminist movement, and felt Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was treated unjustly during his Senate confirmation hearings.^[15] He also criticized organized religion as based on mythology and as a divisive force between peoples.^[16]

He has stated that he worked for a time for Republican former New York Congressman Joe DioGuardi.^[17] and voted for George H. W. Bush in the 1992 presidential election and for Bob Dole in 1996.

Uygur supported the Gulf War of 1990–1991, and supported the War in Afghanistan from its beginning in 2001 until 2009—though he has strongly opposed the Iraq War.^[5]

Later views[link]

On social issues, Uygur is now pro-choice on abortion and supports LGBT rights, including same-sex marriage. In 2009, he advocated the liberalization of drug laws, arguing that the War on Drugs has been a failure, as shown by the continuing violence in Mexico and the border region. He also opposes imprisoning non-violent drug offenders for marijuana possession. He previously supported capital punishment, but now opposes it largely due to multiple exonerations of death row inmates since its reinstatement.

Uygur has expressed support for a return to Clinton-era income tax brackets and has criticized the 2010 Obama–GOP compromise which provided for a temporary extension of the Bush tax cuts. Uygur has stated that he favored welfare reform as enacted under Bill Clinton. He has been critical of excessive regulation, but has argued that in recent decades, regulation of the financial sector has been inadequate. In particular, he faults the deregulatory policies of Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. He views the repeal (which Clinton signed into law) of the Glass–Steagall Act, as a major contributor to the late-2000s recession. However, on many issues Uygur maintains that many of his economic positions have not moved (He describes himself as a fiscal conservative in many cases) instead the right wing has shifted by becoming more extreme even since the end of Bush's presidency, describing Texas governor Rick Perry as "George Bush on Steroids".^[18]

On national security and civil liberties issues, Uygur has strongly opposed the practices begun under the Bush administration, of indefinite detention, warrantless wiretapping and extraordinary rendition, and believes that waterboarding is an illegal torture technique. Uygur has been a strong critic of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the right-wing Israeli government and has stated that he is an advocate for a two state solution in the West Bank and has repeatedly criticized the Israeli government for its failure to materialize.^[19]

On Democratic politicians and officeholders[link]

The 2000 election was the first time Uygur voted Democratic, supporting Al Gore. Uygur has supported Democratic congressional and presidential candidates ever since, though he frequently criticized the Democratic congressional leadership for insufficiently opposing the Bush administration on civil liberties and foreign policy issues. Uygur has criticized Blue Dog Democrats and other centrist and conservative Democrats, some of whom he has labeled as "corporatists". He has described former Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold, a Democrat, as "probably the only guy in the whole entire Senate we can trust".^[20] When Feingold was defeated for reelection in 2010 by Republican Ron Johnson, Uygur said Feingold had been "the best Senator we had, and we no longer have him".^[17]

In part because of concerns over Bush's foreign policy and policies on civil liberties, Uygur said he would support an impeachment of Bush. Early in the 2008 Obama campaign, Uygur questioned Obama's suitability for the presidency, claiming the Obama lacked political experience at the national level and had limited achievements in the U.S. Senate. Nevertheless, he moved to a position of strong support later in the campaign.

Since the fall of 2009, Uygur has taken an increasingly critical attitude towards the Obama administration, saying after two years in office, Obama is, "not a progressive .... He is a consummate politician."^[21] Uygur has criticized the 2010 health insurance reform law as overly watered-down, owing to excessive concessions to business and conservatives in Congress, noting the deal made between Obama and the drug companies. Uygur has similarly criticized the 2010 financial reform law.

Uygur feels the Obama administration has too readily conceded to conservative ideological arguments to the point of demonstrating an unwillingness to defend liberal positions.

Uygur has stated that he will not endorse any candidate in any upcoming elections although he had stated his intention to vote for Obama in the 2012 U.S. Presidential Election.^[22]

Uygur created the talk show The Young Turks with the goal of starting a moderate liberal political and entertainment show.^[2][23] It launched on 13 February 2002. It later became a success online, and aired on the Sirius Satellite Radio network.^[24] The Young Turks claims to be the first Internet video news show and states that it is now the largest online news show in the world. Collectively it has amassed over 700,000,000 views on YouTube. Video of the show is streamed daily on its website and is available as a podcast.^[25][26]

On September 20, 2011, Current TV announced that The Young Turks would launch a weeknight TV edition of the show at 7 p.m. EST (M-F) on the network beginning sometime in the fourth quarter of 2011. According to the show's website, the show is introduced as The Young Turks with Cenk Uygur to differentiate itself from the popular web series.^[27]

MSNBC[link]

On October 21, 2010 MSNBC announced that Uygur had been officially hired as a contributor and substitute anchor for the network. On January 21, 2011, it was announced that Uygur would hosting the 6 p.m. Eastern slot on MSNBC as the anchor of a new prime time edition of MSNBC Live, after the network parted ways with Keith Olbermann, resulting in a rearrangement of the timeslots of MSNBC's other prime time shows. Uygur filled the time slot vacated by Ed Schultz,^[28][29] from late January through June 2011, earning first among people 18–34 in the second quarter. His contract was ended when he did not accept a lower profile weekend slot.^[7] An MSNBC spokesperson expressed regret at Uygur's leaving.^[30] Uygur gave his side of the story on Democracy Now!, saying that MSNBC President Phil Griffin had called him into his office in April and told him that he had been talking to people in Washington and that they did not like Uygur's tone.^[31] MSNBC denied the claim, saying that "We did have numerous conversations with Cenk about his style, not substance."^[32]

Radio and television appearances[link]

Uygur has appeared on numerous occasions on MSNBC, CNN Headline News, E! Entertainment Television, Aljazeera, ABC News, Voice of America, NPR and the Fox News Channel.^[33] He was a regular guest on The Dylan Ratigan Show for a segment opposite various conservative commentators. On several occasions, Uygur filled in for the MSNBC shows of Ratigan,^[34] Ed Schultz, and Keith Olbermann, both before and after becoming a regular paid contributor to MSNBC in October 2010.

Jon Stewart showed clips of Uygur on Comedy Central's The Daily Show in August and September 2010; in one instance Uygur spoke on internet neutrality, and in the other, he commented on pastor Terry Jones and his Koran burning controversy.^[35][36] On December 22, 2010 Uygur interviewed Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on MSNBC's The Dylan Ratigan Show.^[37] He appeared on George Galloway's political radio show on February 11, 2011 as an American correspondent, explaining problems he perceives with American politics for a British audience.^[38] He hosted Good Day L.A. in March 2012.^[39]

Wolf-PAC[link]

In late 2011, after seeing the momentum of Occupy Wall Street, Uygur decided to launch a long term project of his, a political action committee named Wolf-PAC. Wolf-PAC aims to lobby state legislators to pass Resolutions calling for a constitutional convention. If this convention is formed the aim is then to pass an amendment to the United States Constitution that would end corporate person-hood (also reversing Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission), limit private funding of elections and end Super PACs, three issues which Uygur calls "legalized bribery".^[40]

Personal life[link]

Uygur was born and raised in a Sunni Muslim family, but is now a self-described "fervent agnostic".^[1][41] In 2010, along with Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Uygur accepted the "Emperor Has No Clothes Award" from the Freedom From Religion Foundation.^[42] He is married to Wendy Lang Uygur, a marriage and family therapist, who previously worked as a social worker^[43] and now runs her own practice. The Uygurs are the parents of one son, Prometheus Maximus Uygur, born July 2010.^[44]

Greg Gutfeld (born (1964-09-12)September 12, 1964) is an American television personality, political satirist, humorist, magazine editor and blogger. Gutfeld is the host of Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld on the Fox News Channel. He is also one of five co-hosts/panelists on Fox News political talk-show The Five, which debuted on July 11, 2011. Gutfeld identifies politically as libertarian.^[3] Gutfeld (2009): "I became a conservative by being around liberals and I became a libertarian by being around conservatives. You realize that there’s something distinctly in common between the two groups, the left and the right; the worst part of each of them is the moralizing."^[4]

Gutfeld was born and raised in San Mateo, California. He attended Junípero Serra High School^[5] and the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1987.^[6] He currently resides in New York City with his wife, Elena Moussa, whom he met in London. He previously lived in Allentown, Pennsylvania for approximately ten years.

After graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in English, he interned at The American Spectator, as an assistant to R. Emmett Tyrrell. He then got his first full-time job as a staff writer at Prevention magazine. In 1995, he became a staff writer at Men's Health.

He was promoted to editor-in-chief of Men's Health in 1999. In 2000, he was fired by Mens Health for putting his mother in the magazine and replaced by David Zinczenko, who took the magazine in a different direction, departing from the shirtless buff guy to using celebrities on the cover. Yet as David Zinczenko took Mens Health to new heights, Gutfeld himself rebounded quickly. Soon after he became editor-in-chief of Stuff. At Stuff, the circulation increased from 750,000 to 1.2 million during his tenure. In 2003, he hired several little people to attend a conference of the "Magazine Publishers of America" on the topic of "buzz," with the instructions to be as loud and annoying as possible. The stunt did generate publicity for Stuff, but it led to Gutfeld being fired from the magazine soon afterward; he was then made head of "brand development" at Dennis Publishing.^[6]

He helmed Maxim magazine in the UK, from 2004 to 2006.^[6] However, Gutfeld's contract expired without renewal after losses in readership under his tenure. His final year at Maxim saw a loss of about 40,000 readers.^[7] On the December 16, 2009 episode of Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld, Gutfeld's former boss, Maxim owner Felix Dennis, stated that Gutfeld was fired as a result of a Maxim story entitled "The Ikea Sex Party", for which the publication was sued.

Gutfeld was one of the first posting contributors to the The Huffington Post from its launch in 2005 until October 2008; frequent targets of his sarcasm included his colleagues Deepak Chopra, Cenk Uygur, Arianna Huffington, and Huffington Post bloggers. Many of his Huffington Post commentaries/blogs are still available on its website.^[8] He currently blogs at his own site, "The Daily Gut."

Since February 5, 2007, Gutfeld has been host of the hour-long Fox News Channel late-night program, Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld, which airs at 3 AM Eastern Time. Since the show began, Bill Schulz has been Gutfeld's sidekick and Andy Levy has been the show's ombudsman. Schulz is a former colleague of Gutfeld's from Stuff magazine and Andy Levy was a blogger at The Huffington Post who caught Gutfeld's attention with his funny postings.

In July 11, 2011 Gutfeld became a co-host/panelist, along with Juan Williams, Dana Perino, Andrew Napolitano and others, on the Fox News political-opinion program 'The Five'. The panel for the first four episodes consisted of Gutfeld, Andrea Tantaros, Bob Beckel, Dana Perino, and Eric Bolling. The program airs weekdays at 5 PM ET/2 PM PT.^[9]

He also appeared on the show Louie in the episode titled "Come On, God". He plays himself hosting a parody show called Real Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld. His show is hosting a debate between Louis C.K. & Ellen Farber (Liz Holtan). Ellen is the spokeswoman for an organization called Christians Against Masturbation, while Louie is the only person they could find to defend masturbation. The episode aired on August 11, 2011 on FX.

Controversial Remarks[link]

In March 2009 Gutfeld faced a public outcry in Canada after he, Bill Schulz and guest panelists of Red Eye mocked a Canadian military official's remarks that Canada's military could take a year-long 'synchronized break' from its role in the War in Afghanistan.^[10] Canadian Minister of National Defence Peter MacKay demanded an apology from Fox News, which Gutfeld then provided a day later, saying in a statement that "It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize."^[11]

In August 2010 Gutfeld made news by proposing to open a gay bar for Muslims next door to the planned Park51 Mosque in New York City, sometimes referred to as the "Ground Zero mosque".^[12]

Kardashian was born in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of attorney Robert Kardashian and his wife Kris Kardashian (née Houghton). Her father was a third generation Armenian American, and her mother is of Dutch and Scottish descent.^[4] Kardashian has two sisters, Kourtney and Khloé, and one brother, Robert. She has stepbrothers Burton Jenner, Brandon Jenner, and reality TV star Brody Jenner, step-sister Casey Jenner, and half-sisters Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner.^[5] She attended Marymount High School.^[6]

2003–07: Controversy and reality television[link]

In February 2007, a home sex video that she made with singer Ray J in 2003^[10] was leaked.^[11] Vivid Entertainment bought the rights for $1 million and released the film as Kim Kardashian: Superstar on February 21.^[11] Kardashian sued Vivid for ownership of the tape. In late April 2007, Kardashian dropped the suit and settled with Vivid Entertainment for $5 million.^[12]

Kardashian was a friend of Paris Hilton, who introduced her to the socialite scene.^[13] Her first acting role was in the television series Beyond the Break. In October 2007, along with her two sisters, mother, brother, half-sisters, and stepfather she starred in the E! television series, Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Kardashian co-owns a clothing boutique called D-A-S-H with her sisters Kourtney and Khloé.^[14] In December 2007, Kardashian posed nude for Playboy.^[15] In February 2008, Bongo Jeans announced that she would be their face model.^[16] She has also modeled for Carl's Jr., Sugar Factory lollipops, and various other products.^[17][18]

Kardashian starred in the 2008 disaster film spoof Disaster Movie as Lisa,^[19] and appeared in the How I Met Your Mother episode "Benefits". She also appeared on the Season 3 premiere of the series 90210 with her sisters Khloé and Kourtney; they all played themselves.^[20] Kardashian was a guest hostess of WrestleMania XXIV and appeared as a guest judge during Cycle 13 of America's Next Top Model.^[21] On December 16, 2009, Kardashian made a guest star appearance on CBS's CSI: NY with Vanessa Minnillo.^[22][19] In 2009 she had a cameo as club bouncer in the 2009 porn film spoof Deep in the Valley^[19]

Kardashian was one of 13 participants on the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars.^[23][19] She was partnered with Mark Ballas and was the third contestant voted off the show on September 30, 2008, finishing in 11th place overall.^[24] Sanford Siegal, the creator of the Cookie Diet, sued Kardashian, claiming she defamed him on Twitter. According to Siegal, Kardashian tweeted in October 2009 that he was "falsely promoting" that she was on the cookie diet. Siegal filed a claim in a Florida state court claiming the statements are false and defamatory. He also alleges that Kardashian was on QuickTrim's payroll when she posted the tweet. Kardashian's tweet appears to stem from an article on CookieDiet.com, that named Kardashian as one of many celebrities who saw positive results on the diet. Kardashian sent a cease-and-desist order to Siegal, demanding the link be removed.^[25]

Kardashian released her own fragrance product in 2010.^[26] In March 2009, Kardashian launched an endorsement with ShoeDazzle shopping,^[27] of which she is the co-founder and chief fashion stylist.^[17] The following month on April 9, 2009, Kardashian released a workout DVD series, Fit In Your Jeans By Friday, with trainers Jennifer Galardi and Patrick Goudeau.^[14][28] In September 2009, Fusion Beauty and Seven Bar Foundation launched "Kiss Away Poverty", with Kardashian as the face of the campaign.
