Mission Highlights: SpaceX's Dragon Makes History
On May 25, 2012 SpaceX made history when the Dragon spacecraft became the first privately developed vehicle in history to successfully attach to the International Space Station. Previously only four governments -- the United States, Russia, Japan and the European Space Agency -- had achieved this feat. This video features highlights from the mission, including: May 22: Launch Day: SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket launched the Dragon spacecraft into orbit from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. May 23: Dragon orbited Earth as it traveled toward the International Space Station. May 24: Dragon's sensors and flight systems were subjected to a series of tests to determine if the vehicle was ready to attach to the space station. May 25: NASA gave Dragon the GO to attempt berthing with the station. Dragon approached. It was successfully captured by the station's robotic arm. May 26: US astronaut Don Pettit opened Dragon's hatch and the astronauts entered. May 31: After six days at the International Space Station, Dragon departed for its return to Earth, carrying a load of cargo for NASA. SpaceX completed its historic mission when Dragon splashed down safely in the Pacific.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk_ Europe's rocket has no chance.
SpaceX CEO and chief designer, Elon Musk, talks to the BBC's science correspondent Jonathan Amos at The Royal Aeronautical Society. California-based SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corporation) became the first company to launch a privately operated rocket, Falcon 9, on a mission to the International Space Station, and now has its sights set on commercial satellite launch market. As ministers meet to discuss the funding of Europe's space programme, Elon Musk says he believes Europe's rocket, Ariane 5, does not have a future in an increasingly competitive market. Ariane 5's prime contractor, Astrium Space Transportation, has previously said it will find new production technologies and cut costs to meet the challenge.

SpaceX Falcon 9 / Dragon Launch CRS-1 (10-7-2012, SpaceX Webcast Version, HD)
This is the webcast for the SpaceX Falcon 9 / Dragon launch for October 7th, 2012 (10-7-2012). The video begins at T-00:10:00 and continue through to the end of the webcast, post orbital insertion. The rocket did appear to suffer an engine problem at roughly T+00:01:20, but the other engines were able to compensate to complete the mission. The Dragon spacecraft is scheduled to dock later this week. UPDATE: Regarding the anomaly at T+00:01:19, this is SpaceX's official statement: "Approximately one minute and 19 seconds into last night's launch, the Falcon 9 rocket detected an anomaly on one first stage engine. Initial data suggests that one of the rocket's nine Merlin engines, Engine 1, lost pressure suddenly and an engine shutdown command was issued. We know the engine did not explode, because we continued to receive data from it. Panels designed to relieve pressure within the engine bay were ejected to protect the stage and other engines."

NASA & SpaceX Hangout
NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk discussed the first contracted cargo resupply flight to the International Space Station during a Google+ Hangout from 1-1:30 pm EDT Friday, Oct. 5. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and its Dragon cargo spacecraft are scheduled to lift off at 8:35 pm, Sunday, Oct. 7 from at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Bolden and Musk talked about the flight, which will be the first of 12 contracted for NASA by SpaceX to resupply the space station. The SpaceX flights under the Commercial Resupply Services contract will restore an American capability to deliver and return significant amounts of cargo, including science experiments, to the orbiting laboratory -- a feat not achievable since the retirement of the space shuttle. The Dragon will be filled with about 1000 pounds of supplies. This includes critical materials to support the 166 investigations planned for the station's Expedition 33 crew, including 63 new investigations. The Dragon will return about 734 pounds of scientific materials, including results from human research, biotechnology, materials and educational experiments, as well as about 504 pounds of space station hardware.
