Do You Stick to Your Ethics with Technology?
www.lockergnome.com - When Matt Ryan covered the legality of the Hackintosh in a LockerGnome post a few days ago, it became clear that not only should the legal aspect of Hackintoshes be considered, but ethics as well. Here, we talk about the ethics behind the Hackintosh computer (and other things). The Future of Science & Technology, Ethics, Society
web.media.mit.edu When you think of the word "robot," you probably picture social 'bots like Rosie, the Jetson's maid, and Star Wars' C-3PO. Cynthia Breazeal, an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at MIT, is working to make your humanoid robot dreams a reality. Dr. Breazeal is the founder and director of the Personal Robots Group at MIT's Media Lab, a program that develops the techniques and technologies necessary to develop personal robots. Her most famous robot is Kismet, the first robot designed to engage humans in expressive, natural interactions. Kismet, built as part of Breazeal's doctoral thesis at MIT, was dubbed one of the "50 Best Robots Ever" by Wired Magazine in 2006. Other robots emerging from Breazeal's lab include Leonardo, another expressive robot; Autom, a robot designed to help people lose weight; and RoCo, a robotic computer that can adjust its "posture." So if you see a friendly robot walking down the street 20 years from now, Breazeal might be partially to thank. —Ariel Schwartz Nita Farahany, Patricia Churchland, Aubrey de Grey, Cynthia Breazeal thesciencenetwork.org Nita Farahany focuses on the legal, philosophical and social issues arising from developments in the biosciences, particularly related to behavioral genetics and neuroscience. Her published work has appeared in legal, philosophical and scientific publications as well as the mainstream media. She is the editor of The Impact of Behavioral Sciences on Criminal Law (Oxford ...

Politics, Ethics and Technology: What's fair game?
Politics, Ethics and Technology: What's fair game? Ethical issues frequently abound in the political realm. Now, in an increasingly digital world, the use (and abuse) of technology in politics is creating a whole new set of ethical issues and concerns. How are the ethics of social media in particular changing our political landscape? Given the cacophony of political voices and viewpoints, from the professional pundit to the pajama journalist, what are today's standards of fair play? John Lapinski, Associate Professor of Political Science and member of NBC News' Election Unit, will lead this panel discussion featuring prominent thought-leaders in the political arena. Panelists include: Michael Maslansky, C'92, CEO of maslansky luntz + partners, a corporate and public affairs market research firm; Jesse Salazar, C'05, Director of Government Relations for the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; and Cenk Uygur, W'92, host and co-founder of the progressive Internet and talk radio show The Young Turks. Recorded on Penn Alumni Weekend 2012 Friday, May 11, 2012

Ethical Implications of Technology are an Olympic Concern
In August, national teams from more than 200 nations, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, will gather in Beijing for the summer Olympics. The games promotes themselves as more than just a sporting event. The Olympic charter advocates ethics and fair play. How to ensure fair play has been the topic of much debate. There is unanimous opposition to the use of performance enhancing drugs mostly because they give athletes unfair advantage. VOA's Brian Padden reports the use of technology in training and competition is also being examined to see if it gives some athletes the winning edge.

Legal Ethics in An Age of Technology
Legal Ethics in an Age of Technology... That sounds a wee bit lofty, no? Some of you are probably thinking, "Ethics? We're talking about Facebook and Twitter, here, right?" Well as you will see in this video, the more involved a legal professional gets in social media, the more likely it is that an ethical question might just fall into his or her lap... (This video was originally presented at a Law Society of Upper Canada Continuing Professional Development Webinar, "Ethical Considerations in the Age of Technology" on October 7, 2011)

The Ethics of Reproductive Technologies | Lesson 4
Lesson 4, Tuesday November 16, 7:00 pm | For more information visit JewishBrevard.com Many couples struggle with infertility. In their efforts to bear a child, they are often cast into the complicated ethical web of the new reproductive technologies, many of which call into question the very definition of a parent. In the age of sperm donation, egg donation, and surrogacy, can a child have more than two parents? How does Judaism look at "designer babies"? Can we pre-select the gender of the child to match parent preferences or to prevent genetic illnesses? How far must one go in the quest for biological children, and what recourse is there for those who are unable to bear children of their own?

Cold Evil: Technology and Ethics in the 21st Century
"In the past sin and evil have been seen by most religions as the product of personal decisions by individuals. Has our increasingly technological age created new forms of systemic sin and evil -- evil which is virtually immune from personal choice, that we are all complicit in and that threatens our collective existence, yet is unrecognized by our major religious denominations? Kimbrell will address this important technology and ethics issue." Center for the Study of Science and Religion Executive Director, International Center for Technology Assessment: Andrew Kimbrell
