James Blunt

James Hillier Blount (born 22 February 1974), better known by his stage name James Blunt, is an English singer-songwriter and former soldier. He had signed with EMI before securing a recording contract with Atlantic Records and Custard Records.

Blunt rose to prominence in 2004 with the release of his debut studio album Back to Bedlam, before achieving worldwide fame with the singles "You're Beautiful" and "Goodbye My Lover". The album sold over 11 million copies worldwide, topping the UK Albums Chart and peaking at number two in the US. Blunt's second album, All the Lost Souls, which was released in 2007, topped the charts in over 20 countries and produced the hit single "1973". His third album, Some Kind of Trouble, was released in 2010, after its lead single Stay the Night. A deluxe edition was released the following year, titled Some Kind of Trouble: Revisited. In 2013, he released his fourth album, Moon Landing, which was preceded by the lead single "Bonfire Heart", which peaked at number four in the UK Singles Chart following promotion on The One Show and The Graham Norton Show, as well as receiving extensive radio airplay.

"1973" is a song by English recording artist James Blunt. It was released as the lead single from his second studio album, All the Lost Souls from 2007.

First performed by Blunt during his Autumn 2006 North American tour, "1973" was released for radio play on 23 July 2007, to selected radio stations around the world. It was made available for download exclusively from the Verizon Wireless network in the United States on the same date. Starting on 7 August 2007, the song was made widely available for digital download, with physical releases being made available from 3 September 2007. The single peaked at number four on the UK Singles Chart.

Background

"1973" is written by Mark Batson and James Blunt. "He was trying to write an English singer-songwriter song, and I was trying the Dr. Dre end of the scale," says Blunt. The song was inspired by the club scene in Ibiza, where Blunt maintains a residence and enjoys the social scene. The song has been remixed by Pete Tong and Dave Spoon as part of their Ibiza 2007 Remix Project, and Tong started playing the remix in July 2007 when acting as DJ at Pacha, the Ibiza club that inspired the song and opened in 1973. Blunt has stated in a radio interview with KISFM on 8 September 2007, that the girl from his lyrics "Simona" was indeed based on a real woman he had met at the club.

Same Mistake

"Same Mistake" is the second single from James Blunt's second studio album, All the Lost Souls. The song was released to radio on 1 November 2007, before being officially released on 3 December 2007. The song was heavily edited for radio play.

Release

The single was released on three different physical formats. CD1 features the album version of "Same Mistake", plus an additional OpenDisc feature which allows users to access and download a free mp3 of the acoustic version. CD2 features an Ashley Beedle Remix of "1973", a live version of "One of the Brighest Stars", and the video for "Same Mistake". The 7" Vinyl features the live version of "One of the Brighest Stars".

Music video

The video for "Same Mistake" was filmed in Toronto, Canada on 5 October 2007. It was directed by Jonas Åkerlund, who is well known for his work with artists such as Madonna and Christina Aguilera. The video uses an unusual filming technique, where the camera is attached to a frame worn on Blunt's upper torso and is focused on his face throughout the entire video. It was released on 1 November 2007 on the website of The Sun, a British tabloid-style newspaper, and on MSN. The camera "follows" Blunt through a day in his life, from awakening with a beautiful young woman beside him, through his morning ablutions and breakfast, strolling his neighbourhood, meeting up with friends, appearing to hold up a convenience store and taking off in the back of a Jeep, eventually arriving at a club. At the club, Blunt becomes the focus of attention of numerous women, although his reaction appears to be zombie-like. Eventually he leaves the club, and returns home with one of the women. They make love, although Blunt appears detached and bored. The video ends with Blunt singing "where did I go wrong?" and falling asleep.
