TEDxSydney - Paul Kelly - How to Make Gravy
Paul Kelly is one of the most significant singer/songwriters in Australia. Here's his solo rendition of one of his best-loved songs, chosen as the final performance of TEDxSydney 2011.
As well as issuing an enduring body of work with his own bands, Kelly has recorded film scores (Lantana and the Cannes 2006 highlight, Jindabyne) and written songs with and for many other artists.
Songs From The South, a selection of his popular songs first assembled in 1997 and expanded to a double album in 2008, continues to have wide appeal, with many of his songs now lodged deep in the Australian psyche.

Tens of thousands of people enjoyed the day: 800 in the theatre, over 1,000 via big screen simulcast in The Forum, up to 48,000 online via YouTube ... and up to 80,000 tuning in to ABC Radio National. It was a grand day. About TEDx, x = independently organised event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Where once they had gathered the wealth of the land
Daily the pressure got tighter and tighter
Gurindju decided they must make a stand
They picked up their swags and started off walking
At Wattie Creek they sat themselves down
Now it don't sound like much but it sure got tongues talking
Back at the homestead and then in the town
From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow
Vestey man said I'll double your wages
Eighteen quid a week you'll have in your hand
Vincent said uhuh we're not talking about wages
We're sitting right here till we get our land
Vestey man roared and Vestey man thundered
You don't stand the chance of a cinder in snow
Vince said if we fall others are rising
From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow
Then Vincent Lingiari boarded an aeroplane
Landed in Sydney, big city of lights
And daily he went round softly speaking his story
To all kinds of men from all walks of life
And Vincent sat down with big politicians
This affair they told him is a matter of state
Let us sort it out, your people are hungry
Vincent said no thanks, we know how to wait
From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow
Then Vincent Lingiari returned in an aeroplane
Back to his country once more to sit down
And he told his people let the stars keep on turning
We have friends in the south, in the cities and towns
Eight years went by, eight long years of waiting
Till one day a tall stranger appeared in the land
And he came with lawyers and he came with great ceremony
And through Vincent's fingers poured a handful of sand
From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow
That was the story of Vincent Lingiari
But this is the story of something much more
How power and privilege can not move a people
Who know where they stand and stand in the law
From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow
A must watch.

Lyrics:
Every day the sun comes up
Like the day before
Every day I fill my cup
Stand up straight and walk through the door
Every day my mother’s voice
Talks to me
Every day I make my choice
What to do and how to be
Every day I build my life
On her sacrifice
Every day I face my strife
But I know where to go for advice
Many roads I could have gone down
Many, many ways to disappear
Every day I hear the sound
Of her voice right by my ear
So clear, so clear
She taught me to be strong
I guess I got lucky
Now I’ve got a dance and I’ve got a song
They can’t take that way away from me
(Every day
Every day
Every day)
Every night the stars come up
Just like the night before
Every night I drain my cup
Lay me down and close the door

When I travel to new countries, I am always extra curious when it comes to languages -- and this one is crazy! I have this obsession with learning them -- at least a few words but likely more -- so I can communicate with locals and feel more connected to their culture.
Few languages have boggled my mind more than what they speak here in Georgia. It's my second time in this country, and I'm just as confused as I remembered back in 2015 when trying to grasp the language.
And then I learned that the Georgian language is, in fact, one of the most ancient, unique and creative languages in the world! So I made this video all about it :)

We'll quickly pass over some of its standout characteristics, from its ejective sounds to its striking writing system, before we settle down into Georgian's atypical syllable structure.
Not only are its syllables long, they're full of sonority violations. This happens thanks to the language's morphology, particularly the way its verbs put pieces together. We'll end with a contrast betw...

Have you ever come across a language that you found particularly interesting? Which ones? Hungarian and Turkish always make me think!

Information about the fascinating and unique Georgian language - the national language of Georgia (country in the Caucasus region, not the US state), belonging to the Kartvelian language family. I explain how the Georgian functions in this short and hopefully comprehensive video so this language can become a little bit more familiar to you.

~ Briefly ~
Starting from one clustery word, we'll go on a journey looking for the "root" of this record-breaking consonant phenomenon known as Georgian.
We'll end with a contrast between the clustered but relatively benign gvprtskvni-like verbs versus ones that look deceptively easier to say but have much trickier grammar.
