Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeroes NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros can't exactly slip into an office building unnoticed: Clad in the same clothes they'd worn at a concert the night before, the LA band's 10 ragtag misfits would have fit in far more seamlessly at, say, Burning Man. Seeming to exist in a blissed-out alternate universe — during the wonderful "Home," singer Jade Castrinos exclaims, "Good morning, everybody!" as the clock behind her reads 2:10 pm — this is a band whose performances beg to be seen as well as heard, not to mention shot through a wide-angle lens. The biggest band to play a Tiny Desk Concert - the 10 members of The Magnetic Zeroes played three songs from their debut album (Up From Below). The set included: - Janglin - Home - 40 Day Daydream

NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert: Phoenix
The sounds of the group's best-selling 2009 album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix are so ubiquitous to viewers of TV commercials that they produce a Pavlovian impulse to purchase portable music players and luxury automobiles. But at this Tiny Desk Concert, instantly recognizable hits such as "1901" and "Lisztomania" were stripped down and reassembled as sweetly shambling acoustic numbers.

Of Monsters and Men: NPR Music Field Recording
See more Field Recordings: www.npr.org Even before the gates had opened on the first day of the Sasquatch! Music Festival, we managed to get backstage of the Gorge Amphitheater early to capture a live session with one of the hottest new bands to hit the festival circuit, Of Monsters and Men. No strangers to natural beauty, the Icelanders were nevertheless stunned by the picturesque backdrop of the Gorge as they performed "Mountain Sound," one of the new songs added to the American release of their debut album. "We sleep until the sun goes down" they sang repeatedly as instead the sun broke through the clouds as if called out by their radiant optimism. The band will continue to thrill fans in larger and larger venues, but it's private moments like this when Of Monsters and Men best display their natural charm. Now Now: NPR Music Field Recording
See more Field Recordings at: www.npr.org The "Graffiti Park" in Austin, Texas, is stunning from any angle: Essentially a giant public canvas, the staggered façade on Baylor Street is constantly refreshed with new eye-popping murals by aerosol artists. When the members of Now, Now met us there, they were good enough sports to haul their guitars and amplifiers all the way to the top. Now, Now's newest album, Threads, begins with an ominous dare: "Find a thread to pull, and we can watch it unravel." It's a spot-on metaphor for the on-again, off-again relationship that provides the record's running narrative. Frontwoman Cacie Dalager sings from the fraught space between breaking up and letting go, zooming in on moments where she could cut the problem off at its source, but instead ends up grabbing desperately at its stray ends. Intense as the songs on Threads are, they're also meditative: terse, frank internal monologues which show that Dalager's lovesick narrator is at least being honest with herself. That may be why, perched on a concrete slab high above downtown Austin, the band seemed right at home. It was a spot perfect for deep thinking. Now, Now's three members — Dalager, guitarist Jess Abbott and drummer Bradley Hale — are small in stature, but they think in widescreen. In this performance of "But I Do," stripped of its usual drums, synthesizers and programmed tracks, the band still aims for a saturated sound. Dalager's alto chugs along the low end, Abbott's ...

Sera Cahoone's Tiny Desk Concert at NPR Music
Sera Cahoone got her start playing drums for a few widely adored bands in the Pacific Northwest, most notably Band of Horses and the spell-checker-defying Carissa's Wierd. But her self-titled, self-released 2006 album marked her as a fully formed talent — a warm and inviting singer whose songs convey world-weariness and homespun grace. Cahoone stopped by the NPR offices to perform a few songs at the desk of All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen. Read More: www.npr.org See More Tiny Desk Concerts: www.npr.org

Passion Pit: Tiny Desk Concert
by STEPHEN THOMPSON Passion Pit's Michael Angelakos is a fussy sonic craftsman: A keyboardist and singer who started out working solo on his laptop, he now makes fizzily catchy electro-pop that orbits around monster hooks. He's not, in other words, the first musician you'd associate with a stripped-down performance behind NPR Music's Tiny Desk, where Technicolor production tends to give way to unfiltered voices and bare instrumental essentials. But Angelakos, a gifted songwriter who's been publicly forthcoming and articulate about his battles with bipolar disorder and substance abuse, is no intellectual or musical lightweight. Angelakos clearly saw an opportunity in bare-bones arrangements of his best-known songs — his 2008 breakthrough single "Sleepyhead" and two hits from this year's Gossamer, "Take a Walk" and "Carried Away" — that he couldn't explore with a full band. With only his own falsetto, an electric piano, and simple guitar lines from Passion Pit's Ian Hultquist, Angelakos gets to direct listeners toward his words, which blossom under scrutiny. "Take a Walk," for example, turns up in a zillion commercials thanks to that monster hook, but it's also a rich, thoughtful sketch of an immigrant family's experiences, expectations, dreams and disappointments. In this performance, the hooks do persist, but words rule the day. Set List "Take A Walk" "Sleepyhead" "Carried Away" Credits Producer: Bob Boilen; Editor: Denise DeBelius; Audio Engineer: Kevin Wait ...
