Double Pendulum Chaos Light Writing (computer simulation) 1
Double pendulum comprising two rigid linkages of negligible mass with point masses attached to the ends of the linkages, confined to two dimensional rotational motion about their joints without any dissipation. Here the double pendulum is held at 90 degrees and then released. Initially the motion appears regular, but chaos soon sets in, with the end point of the pendulum eventually covering the whole space available to it for a given starting energy. The double pendulum is a wonderful example of how chaos exists in even a simple, non-dissipative, un-forced rigid 2DOF system! In this universe, chaos truly is the rule rather than the exception. In the same way as turbulent flow is well mixed, the end point of this pendulum is also "well mixed" in the sense that it has explored all of the space energetically available to it. The linkages are coloured according to the instantaneous tension. A red colour scheme is employed during tension and a blue colour scheme during compression. A point source of light is placed at the pendulum end point and an exposure map is created by accumulating this light on the pixels that it traverses throughout the simulation. The light source has a Gaussian spread with standard deviation of 2 pixels for added realism. So for a given point at which the light happens to be, a square grid of 4 standard deviations is placed around that point and an array is increment at those indices with the gaussian spread function evaluated on that square grid. An ...

VISSIM Simulation for Lincoln, NE Roundabout
The City of Lincoln asked Ourston Roundabout Engineering to complete a simulation of a high-capacity roundabout at the intersection of Superior St. and North 14 St. The City was hesitant to implement a roundabout with three lane entries, and requested a visual animation of how the roundabout would operate. The projected 2025 peak hour volumes are around 5700 vehicles per hour.

Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE)
Nuclear reactor operators can expand safety margins with more precise information about how materials behave inside operating reactors. INL's new simulation platform makes such studies easier & more informative by letting researchers "plug-n-play" their mathematical models, skipping years of computer code development. Ocean currents likely to carry oil to Atlantic
Update: February 28, 2011 - What happened to the oil? Detectable amounts never made it to the Atlantic, at least not in an easily visible form on the ocean surface. In this follow-up article we review: * the difference between a projection and an actual forecast * the challenges of making short-term projections of natural processes that can act chaotically, such as ocean currents. See: www2.ucar.edu ------ June 3, 2010 A detailed computer modeling study released June 3, 2010, indicates that oil from the massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico might soon extend along thousands of miles of the Atlantic coast and open ocean as early as this summer (see www2.ucar.edu ). The modeling results are captured in a series of dramatic animations produced by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and collaborators. The colors represent a dilution factor ranging from red (most concentrated) to beige (most diluted). The simulations do not make any assumptions about the daily rate or total amount of oil spilled and the dilution factor does not attempt to estimate the actual barrels of oil at any spot. Instead, one unit per day of a liquid "dye tracer" is injected in the model at the spill site (injected continuously over the period April 20 through June 20). The animation on this page shows possible scenarios of what might happen to dye released in the upper 65 feet of ocean at the spill site. The dilution factor depicts how dye released at the site of the spill will be ...

Across the Universe: Cosmological Computer Simulations
In this movie, we are using an artistic approach to communicate a scientific topic. Dr. Agnieszka "Bronka" Bronowska, a HITS researcher and artist, has designed and produced a video on dark matter and cosmological computer simulations. The Theoretical Astrophysics group (TAP) of the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies, supermassive black holes, stars, and planets. Group leader Professor Volker Springel has worked on cosmological computer simulations like the renowned "Millennium Simulation". He is one of the most-cited astrophysicists today and just received an ERC starting grant for new computer simulations of galaxy formation.

Computer Simulation of Star Being Devoured By Black Hole
This computer simulation shows a star being shredded by the gravity of a massive black hole. Some of the stellar debris falls into the black hole and some of it is ejected into space at high speeds. The areas in white are regions of highest density, with progressively redder colors corresponding to lower-density regions. The blue dot pinpoints the black hole's location. The elapsed time corresponds to the amount of time it takes for a Sun-like star to be ripped apart by a black hole a million times more massive than the Sun. NASA | Computer Model Shows a Disk Galaxy's Life History
This cosmological simulation follows the development of a single disk galaxy over about 13.5 billion years, from shortly after the Big Bang to the present time. Colors indicate old stars (red), young stars (white and bright blue) and the distribution of gas density (pale blue); the view is 300000 light-years across. The simulation ran on the Pleiades supercomputer at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., and required about 1 million CPU hours. It assumes a universe dominated by dark energy and dark matter. Credit: F. Governato and T. Quinn (Univ. of Washington), A. Brooks (Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison), and J. Wadsley (McMaster Univ.). Is Schrodinger's cat proof we're living in a computer simulation?
There is a growing number of people, like this guy: io9.com ...who believe that the odds are vastly in favor of the fact that we're experiencing a computer-simulated reality. In fact, many think that the observer effect in quantum physics: en.wikipedia.org ...is just an artifact of the computer that is simulating our reality!
