Dr. Hedy Fry celebrates Trinidad & Tobago's 50th Independence Day
House of Commons June 2012 Hon. Hedy Fry (Vancouver Centre, Liberal): "Mr. Speaker, I stand to pay tribute to the land of my birth, Trinidad and Tobago, on its 50th anniversary of independence. A small country of 1.3 million people, Trinidad and Tobago punches well above its weight in the Commonwealth and in the world. Trinidad and Tobago is the original multicultural nation, its rich cultural diversity spawning renowned author like Vidya Naipaul and Nobel Prize poet Samuel Selvon; bringing to the world calypso, limbo and the only new musical instrument of the 20th century, the steel pan. Through effective long-term management of its natural resources, this little island is now one of the wealthiest countries in the Americas. It was recently removed from the OECD's list of developing countries and named the third best place in the Commonwealth to raise a female child. I am one female grateful for the excellent opportunities Trinidad and Tobago gave me, as a child of poor parents. On behalf of the Liberal caucus, I congratulate my fellow Trinnies on their 50th anniversary, and echo the last verse of the national anthem: Here every creed and race find an equal place and may God bless our nation."

Dr. Hedy Fry presents a second petition to save the Kitsilano Coast Guard base
October 24, 2012 House of Commons Hon. Hedy Fry (Vancouver Centre, Liberal): Mr. Speaker, I rise to present yet another petition on the same topic to the House. There are 700 signatures on this petition. The undersigned citizens of Vancouver in the province of British Columbia draw the attention of the House to the following. Inasmuch as the large area served by the Kitsilano Coast Guard base covers the marine areas stretching from the tip of the University of BC north and east, including English Bay, False Creek, Burrard Inlet and its extremities up to Indian Arm, that the Kitsilano base serves the largest and busiest port in Canada, the Port of Vancouver, that the Kitsilano base serves a large number of pleasure craft, canoes, kayaks, working vessels, tugs, fishing fleets, lumber barges, tourist vessels and cruise ships, as well as cargo ships, that the Kitsilano base performs an average of 300 rescues a year, that the base at Sea Island will increase the response time by 30 minutes to an hour, which will put lives at greater risk, the petitioners call upon Parliament to rescind the closure of Kitsilano Coast Guard base.

Dr. Hedy Fry congratulates Ferne Downey on her presidency of the International Federation of Actors
Hon. Hedy Fry (Vancouver Centre, Liberal Party of Canada.): Mr. Speaker, I am delighted to extend my congratulations to Ferne Downey, who has recently been named president of the International Federation of Actors. Many of us here in the House met Ferne at ACTRA's annual reception on October 15 but may not have heard of her remarkable achievement. She becomes president at a challenging time for the global performing arts community, as we debate the WIPO treaty and questions of performers' moral rights in the Internet age. Ms. Downey spent the past thirty years as a performer on radio, television, film and on stage. As ACTRA's national president since 2009, Ms. Downey played an integral role in ensuring that the voices of Canadian performers are heard and respected. Now, Canadians can be proud that one of our own is the highest ranked global advocate for performers. Her appointment is a testament to Canada's growing arts and entertainment industry, which contributes $85 billion to GDP today; more than mining, fisheries and forestry combined. Please join me in congratulating Ferne Downey and wishing her well in her efforts at the FIA.

Dr. Hedy Fry's Statement on the death of Amanda Todd
Hon. Hedy Fry (Vancouver Centre, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, I rise today in the House to mourn, with her parents and all Canadians, the tragic suicide of Amanda Todd. While the media have reacted with shock and dismay, this incident is but one of what has become a serious, chronic problem. Bullying has always had severe mental and physical effects on the bullied and research shows that bullies have often been victims of abuse themselves. The time is past when society can shrug bullying off as a childhood rite of passage. The Internet has changed that. Cyber-bullying follows one worldwide, through life and even after death. It is relentless, sinister and pervasive. There is no escape and no respite. The suicide of Amanda Todd and others who have found death to be their only haven will have been meaningless unless the House summons the political will not only to develop an immediate national strategy to educate and prevent bullying, but to find and punish perpetrators.

Dr. Hedy Fry asks why the Minister of Health refuses to take action on life-saving cancer drugs
Hon. Hedy Fry (Vancouver Centre, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, last week we learned that 90% of cancer patients and their families suffer severe hardship, often bankruptcy, to pay for prescription drugs and home care. In the 2004 health accord, Prime Minister Martin and the premiers agreed to fund and develop a national pharmaceutical strategy for medically necessary drugs. The current government abandoned that strategy, forcing patients to go on social assistance to get their medication. Is the government saying that Canadians should go bankrupt to stay alive? If not, what is its plan to help them?

Dr. Hedy Fry again asks the government to save the Kitsilano Coast Guard station
House of Commons June 20, 2012 Hon. Hedy Fry (Vancouver Centre, Liberal): Mr. Speaker, Conservative MPs, like the member for Nanaimo—Alberni, are openly criticizing their government's decision to close the Kitsilano Coast Guard base and three marine communication centres in BC He correctly points out that BC is prone to regular earthquakes that can shut down communication stations as well as that maintenance issues with hovercraft will affect the crowded Vancouver port in English Bay. If the government will not listen to this House or experts, will it at least listen to its own members and reverse this dangerous decision before lives are lost?

Dr. Hedy Fry asks if the Minister is ashamed of Canada's decline in gender equality
Hon. Hedy Fry (Vancouver Centre, Liberal): Mr. Speaker, the World Economic Forum reports that Canada dropped 7 points and out of the top 20 nations in gender equality. Women are under-represented in this House, on corporate boards and too many still make less than their male counterparts for work of equal value. It does not help when the minister responsible for gender equality votes to reopen the abortion debate. Is the minister not ashamed that Canada's position has dropped under her watch to the point where we are behind Nicaragua when it comes to gender equality?

Dr. Hedy Fry celebrates the work of Dr. Julio Montaner of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS
House of Commons May 31, 2012 "Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honour an exceptional Canadian researcher, Dr. Julio Montaner, Head of the Division of AIDS at UBC and director of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. Dr. Montaner was recently awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to Austria, given to an individual who has provided outstanding services of public benefit to the country and the world. It cites: "Dr. Montaner's leadership and innovation in HIV and AIDS research has improved the lives of thousands of people in Austria, and millions of people throughout the world". The award recognizes Dr. Montaner's leadership in promoting a major Canadian scientific discovery: highly active anti-retroviral treatment. HAART reduces the viral load of HIV by the second dose, making it impossible to transmit the disease. Called "treatment as prevention" it is hailed by WHO and UNAIDS. Other nations, including China, have implemented it, yet in Canada, only British Columbia has done so, resulting in a consistent decline in new HIV cases there, while other provinces show an increase in HIV. The federal government refuses to meet or acknowledge Dr. Montaner and this significant achievement. Once again, ideology prevails over science. Shame."
