Artés

Artés is a Spanish town in the province of Barcelona, Bages comarca (county), in Catalonia.

Location

The town of Artés is located at the center of Catalonia, at the eastern edge of the plain zone of Bages -commonly known as Pla de Bages. The town is in the basin of the Gavarresa river and of its affluent, the stream of Malrubí.

It is bordered on the North by the towns of Sallent and Avinyó, in the South by Calders and it shares a small border in the West with Navarcles, on the limit of the Llobregat river.

The town is near the Artés Formation, a unique geological formation that owes its name to its proximity with the town.

History

The name of Artés is believed to derive from the Latin word Artium , which means "fortified hill". This is based on the evidence of the existence of a 6th-century fortified church on the top of the hill of Artés, where the first settlers began to expand the village into the valley.

Little evidence of the Prehistory of Artés has been discovered to date. However, a document from the year 938 indicates the presence of three dolmens; and abundant samples of Iberian pottery have been found in the valley of Salabernada.

Artes (magazine)

Artes was a Swedish cultural magazine about art, music and literature published between 1975 and 2005 in Sweden. Compared to younger magazines, it was known for its stability, genuine quality and as somewhat culturally conservative.

History and profile

Artes was started in 1975 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts and the Swedish Academy. Official representative was Horace Engdahl, as permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy.

Östen Sjöstrand was the editor. He opened it for advanced essays and held popular essay competitions. He did not avoid the esoteric and the magazine became of favourite of culturally interested readers. Sjöstrand also became a member of the Swedish Academy in 1975. According to critic Curt Bladh, this gave him insight into the discussions preceding the Nobel Prize in Literature and several prize winners were previously featured in Artes.Samfundet De Nio joined the magazine soon after its start.

In 1989 Bengt Jangfeldt and Gunnar Harding took over the magazine and turned it into more of "an educational institution" according to Horace Engdahl.

Integrated Applications Promotion

ARTES 20 Integrated Applications Promotion (IAP) is an European Space Agency programme that supports the development of services utilizing two or more space assets, such as satellite navigation, communication or earth observation, with terrestrial systems. Projects are focused on creating user-driven applications around solving particular problems or opportunities instead of creating a technological solutions.

Integrated Applications Promotion Programme was approved on ESA ministerial conference in November 2008 as a new branch of Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems programme. Ambassadors platform was opened in May 2010 aiming to further expand awareness of the programme in Eastern and Central Europe. Till September 2014 ESA supported 108 projects in ARTES 20 programme.

Programme is divided between three types of activities:

Open Competitions

Standard procedure of placing contracts with ESA focused around satisfying particular needs of ESA or collaborating institutions while working with a fixed budget and time schedule. Projects cover Feasibility Studies and Demonstrations.
