Conflict & IDA: Breaking the cycle of conflict and poverty
More than 1.5 billion people live in fragile and conflict-affected countries. For these people, conflict worsens poverty by undermining economic development. Political instability and armed violence in these countries cannot only hinder development in neighboring countries, but can also lead to refugees, cross-border crime, human trafficking, and terrorism, with regional and potentially global impacts. IDA, the World Bank's Fund for the Poorest, supports fragile and conflict-affected countries by providing the financing needed to rebuild state institutions and develop the infrastructure that people need to resume peaceful and constructive lives. Many conflict-affected countries receive exceptional allocations from IDA and can also benefit from IDA's policies on debt relief. IDA is a multi-issue institution, supporting the world's 81 poorest countries through a range of activities that pave the way toward equality, economic growth, job creation, and better living conditions. IDA places emphasis on four areas where support is urgently needed: gender, climate change, fragile and conflict-affected countries, and crisis response. Learn more at: www.worldbank.org

Elite Plan One World Bank at Bilderberg Confab
Around 150 of the world's elite approached the grounds of a suburban Virginia hotel on Thursday for the first day of the 2012 Bilderberg Conference, but also on hand were throngs of protesters who gathered to oppose the top-secret gathering. Journalists and critics of the annual clandestine conference stationed themselves outside of a Chantilly, Virginia Marriott hotel near Washington, DC early Thursday to catch a glimpse of the government officials, entrepreneurs, and other assorted members of the privileged elite who had gathered for this year's event. www.infowars.com www.prisonplanet.tv twitter.com www.facebook.com [Check out Alex's New Social Network-'Planet Infowars' planet.infowars.com

Rising and volatile food prices are causing pain and suffering for poor people around the world, driving 44 million people into extreme poverty in recent months. Let Africa Trade With Africa
In Africa, non-tariff trade barriers raise transaction costs and limit the movement of goods, services, people and capital across borders. To further development, African governments must embrace regional integration, break down these barriers and help Africans trade with each other.

The Crisis of Credit Visualized
The Short and Simple Story of the Credit Crisis.

The goal of giving form to a complex situation like the credit crisis is to quickly supply the essence of the situation to those unfamiliar and uninitiated. This project was completed as part of my thesis work in the Media Design Program, a graduate studio at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

Public Domain (Domínio Público) - English Subtitles
We started filming this documentary independently over one year ago with very little funding, which we obtained by throwing a party. The crew waived their salary and we received equipment free of charge. During this period we roamed through the communities of Vidigal, Vila Autódromo, Providência, the port region of Rio and the surroundings of the Maracanã stadium, collecting images, interviewing residents, participating in their meetings, debates and conflicts. These communities have been recognized as some of the most affected by real estate speculation, a phenomenon in which housing prices are increasing due to preparation for the major world events to be hosted in Rio: the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016. As a result of the rising prices, Rio residents, primarily the poorest residents are being forced to move to distant suburbs that lack infrastructure and services and are dominated by heavily armed militia.
We then began to investigate were these billions of Brazilian reais directed towards the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics are being directed. It is quite clear that a large sum of this money will come from tax payers’ pockets, only to be used for the financial gain of a small group of contractors, politicians, bank owners and businessmen involved in these events. The legacy left for the benefit of the majority of the population will be minimal. And worst of all, many communities are being removed illegally in areas of great real estate interest, and the residents are relocated to distant suburbs that lack infrastructure and are dominated by a heavily armed militia.
In addition, we have acquired images of UPP (Pacifying Police Unit) in Mangueira, and the Almeão Complex cable car, through our collaborators. We also interviewed professor Carlos Vainer of the Institute of Research and Urban and Regional Planning of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IPPUR/UFRJ), an expert in the field of mega events and state and federal deputies Marcelo Freixo and Romario. In the case of the latter we were obliged to visit Brasilia and took the opportunity to film the nation’s capital and the construction being done at Mané Garrincha stadium.
Do you believe change is possible, but you’re not sure how to help? Collaborate with us! The script is not complete, but together we can rewrite the end of this story. Your donation will help us produce and share this information, helping society to decide its own future. We need 90,000 reais (approximately 45,000 USD), a minimal sum to film extensively and finalize our film, publicize on the internet, and to exhibit the film in the streets, parks and communities through Cine Ataque, translated as “Film Attack,” We believe our film can create world wide awareness to these deplorable acts being committed against the Brazilian people. Together we can change this reality. Participate!!!

World Bank Report on Cambodia
Cambodia is emerging from decades of civil war and isolation. Helped by international programs aimed at reducing poverty, international donors this year alone have more than 600 million dollars to help the country. The World Bank coordinates much of Cambodia's aid plan. By focusing on empowering the poorest people and working with the government, private sector and civil society, assistance efforts are beginning to yield results.

"Beyond Aid" - Speech by World Bank President Robert Zoellick
September 14, 2011 - World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick said the "time for muddling through is over" and all countries needed to be "responsible stakeholders" in the world economy; they need to act on today's problems while building for tomorrow's challenges; they need to solve national issues with an eye towards shaping a healthy international system. In a speech at George Washington University entitled "Beyond Aid", Zoellick said the world needs to recognize the new realities, unimaginable in 1944 when the World Bank was created, and move to a global system that integrates developed and developing countries, innovation, private investment, and the 50 percent of the world's population too often kept behind -- women.
