La Défense, Paris
A brief visit to the pedestrian plaza and transportation hub of La Défense, the trendy business suburb of Paris. La Défense is a planned community in which cars, trains, and buses have been banished to underground tunnels and terminals, leaving the open street level to pedestrians. The area got off to a slow start decades ago, but has grown in prestige and popularity and is now one of the most expensive business districts in Europe. It's a nice place to work, especially at lunchtime, when everyone comes out onto the plaza! At night, though, it's deserted. This video shows the plaza and some of its best known buildings, including the CNIT, Grande Arche, etc. It also takes a look at the vast underground transportation complex beneath the plaza (7:30).

Hello Kalani,
In this video you have Oxbow team riders Laird Hamilton, Kai Lenny and Jason Polakow.
Amazing!
Kind regards,
Delphine LAMOUR

I love it if you "like" it, please share me if you love me.
Aloha all, just wanted to post a little footage from Jaws today...These waves are insanely huge and I have so much respect for the surfers that have the guts to do this as well as the jet ski operators that are tremendously talented in their own right, many of them big wave riders as well..
Anyhow, I live a couple of miles from Jaws on W.Kuiaha in a little town called Haiku. At night I can hear these monsters breaking, they sound like thunder...

3:50 Hawaii Time
I just spoke to Laird around 3pm Hawaii time (5pm PST) from Maui. He said they had a good morning and that his board and body were feeling good. They went out fairly early, and it had not gotten too crowded yet. The boys (Dave Kalama, Terry Chun, Derrick Doerner and others) came in for gas fuel and food fuel for lunch. By then a front had come in and “chop sueyed” the waves. Laird then proceeded to watch some of the action from the cliff side. He said a lot of skis went up on to the rocks along with some boards. He felt like there may have been several new comers who were having to work it all out.
I’m on Kauai and Kings reef began to break ever so slightly. The ocean floor by this reef is so deep that you don’t even see Kings unless it’s starting to be Hawaiian 25 ft (that’s double in the front).
The boys are going to sit tight on Maui and then make their plan for tomorrow. As most of you know the swell hits Kauai first, then Oahu (which is having a bit of rain and some major water surging), Maui and so on. Once they get a beat on the conditions (wind, swell) they will most likely decide to continue to stay on Maui and surf Peah’i (aka Jaws) tomorrow. If I hear anything of interest I will let you all know."

MAKE presents: The LED
Take a tour through the world of the light-emitting diode. Learn - who invented it, how to use it, and how to make your own.
Collin Cunningham: People are fascinated by light. I mean just glancing over at a display of flashing lights can grab my attention. Do you ever remember sitting around a campfire? Staring at the flames and just being totally transfixed, almost like if you're watching TV. It's comforting, and it can even by hypnotic. Recently, technology has made creating light a whole lot easier to do. For that, we have this little guy to thank. The light emitting diode, or LED for short.
LEDs have a lot of different uses, from a simple power on indicator to traffic signals. LEDs use about ten percent of the energy of a traditional light bulb, and they can last about thirty times longer. That makes them a pretty big hit with businesses looking to do large scale visual communication.
The first person to ever report the effects of a light emitting diode was researching another form of communication. In 1907, a man by the name of H. J. Round was researching radio waves for Marconi Labs. He was using a device called a cats whisker detector, which no, does not contain any cats or part of cats. Round was searching for a sweet spot on a crystal silicon carbide when he noticed something odd. Part of the crystal started to glow, it lit up a pale yellow, and that was an LED.
H. J. Round's crystal experiment was so cool and simple that I had to try it myself. So I got a piece of silicon carbide, then I hooked that up to the positive lead on my power supply. That's an alligator clip. I hooked a little sewing needle to the ground on my power supply. Then I began to search for light emitting zones.
I built my own sort of cats whisker detector in order to keep the needle in place on a particularly bright spot I found. Now I can sit back and enjoy the warm glow of a homemade LED anytime I choose, even though it's pretty dim, but it's still cool.
As far as we know, Round's research into light emitting crystals ended here, which is a shame because he was definitely on to something. But of course that's not the end of the story. Fifteen years later, in imperial Russia, a scientist and inventor named Oleg Vladmirovich Losev noticed that certain diodes in radios started to glow a bit when in use. Losev conducted a lot of heavy research and published his findings in several languages. But, sadly, they seem to have gone unnoticed. It wasn't until 1962, that a visible light emitting diode was made practical by Nick Holonyak working at General Electric. He's widely known as the father of the LED.
The technology that Holonyak brought to the public is remarkably similar to our crystal experiment. A thin metal wire connects one side of the circuit to a small piece of semi-conductive material on the other side. The LED's two leads are cut to different lengths to show you how it should be connected. The longer is called the anode, and that connects to positive. The shorter is the cathode, and that goes to negative. To power an LED, you can just use a simple coin cell. This is a CR2032. And just make sure the longer lead is on the positive side, which is wider and smoother, and negative is on the other. If you plan to use a battery, let's say a nine volt, you'll also need a resistor to limit the current so we don't burn out the LED. Connect negative to the cathode, the shorter lead, and we'll put a 470 ohm resistor between the positive battery and the anode. For more useful info, check out the LED Center, and there's a lot of great history at the LED Museum. For all types of project ideas, info, and inspiration head over to Makezine.com.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) and Maitland City Council (MCC), with additional support from the Migration Heritage Centre NSW, is excited to present the first in a series of artistic and historic exhibitions focused on the many waves of migration to regional NSW with a specific focus on the Hunter Valley in NSW.
Hanna Kay was commissioned to create this exhibition because her evocative style of painting figurative images of land and the influence of nature made her an ideal choice. Kay also understands the fabric of the Jewish faith and she often travels past the cemetery on her weekly trips to teach Hebrew at the University of Sydney.
Kay was born in Israel and has travelled and lived in Europe, America and has now settled in the Upper Hunter in NSW. This exhibition tells the story of displacement and migration in regional NSW during colonial times. Philip Adams, writer and long time friend of Kay, described the paintings in the exhibition Undertow as ‘intensely beautiful and deeply moving; and they are a paradox’.
Australia's history of migration can be understood in the context of world history and British colonial and Australian Federal Government policies. All people in Australia share the legacy of migration. Unless we are Aboriginal people, we are all migrants or descendants of migrants. For the exhibition Undertow MRAG has adopted the philosophy of the Migration Heritage Centre NSW in which a more representative heritage is preserved for future generations that aims to validate migrants' experiences and challenge myths and prejudices.
Undertow is an exhibition created by Hanna Kay who was commissioned to create a series of paintings that is influenced and informed by the Jewish Cemetery in Maitland; one of only two ‘stand alone’ Jewish Cemeteries in regional NSW. Along with the cemetery itself, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue tells the story of the people buried there as a way to re-tell the story of the Jewish community in colonial Maitland.
Historian and academic Janis Wilton OAM also contributed to the exhibition with a historical study that flanks the exhibition Undertow. Wilton researched the stories of the people buried at the cemetery and the stories of the place itself; the people buried there, the communities from which they came, the lives they led and their place in Maitland’s history.
The exhibition Undertow will travel to at least 7 locations across the east coast of Australia over an eighteen month period. Venues include Broken Hill, Orange, Tamworth, Moree in NSW, Stanthorpe and Dalby in Queensland and The Jewish Museum of Australia in Melbourne.
4th April 2011 - Maitland Regional Art Gallery received the National Trust Heritage Award for Interpretation and Presentation, Corporate/Government, for Undertow - the Maitland Jewish Cemetery Project (http://www.nationaltrust.com.au/events/festival/heritageawards/)
Here are the judges' comment:
Judges’ Comments – National Trust Heritage Awards: Interpretation and Planning, Corporate/Government Category:
A remarkable and visionary project, which sought to revive interest in the small forgotten 1840s cemetery of some fifty graves. The outcomes have encompassed an exhibition of artworks inspired by the Cemetery, with interpreting catalogues and education program, a wonderful published history, and similar projects that have been initiated within other regional and rural communities. A truly remarkable outcome for the modest resources invested, demonstrating the discoverable relevance and importance of heritage places, and how the celebration can inspire other communities.

Gedda Headz - Spaced Out
One day, I was on set for a corporate shoot, in the east mountains of France. I was busy as a runner can be, carrying heavy equipment, wires, spotlights, all sorts of things, when I got a phonecall. The number was hidden, and a stranger spoke to me with what I thought to be an Indian accent. Danish. He was Danish. I found a mail later this day, from this guy, asking me to come up with my own concept and shoot a music video for him. As most of those random proposals turn out to be dead-ends, I was a bit skeptical at first. But mails followed, and we talked about concepts, team, shooting, and other practicalities. Then I went to the Berlin Film Festival, where I met Keidrych. He sat down in front of me, and ask me: "Do you have a project ? Is there a budget ?". We started talking about it. Weeks later, we were flying to Hong Kong to make this happen. Hong Kong because it's futuristic and intense, like an Asian Neverland. The track has a little Asian feeling to me, the techno beat mixed with the 8-bit-style synthesizers.
Followed a month of preparation, careful plannings, a few arguings, meetings, location scouting, a tad of random castings drunk at 5am in the clubbing street. A week of intense sweating, shouting and shooting. Another month of post-production, grading, etc. And finally, here it is.
I have many thanks to make. First, to Ulrik, for offering me this great project, and for trusting me. Then, to Keidrych, for our teamwork and our passionate discussions about life, Boards of Canada, Thai food and music videos. To Sophia, for her strength and kindness. To Purcy, for sticking to the plan. To Sam, for putting together the best riders of Hong Kong. To Miggy, for making the costumes real, and Irving, who did just the same with the set. To Connie, for her communicative joy. To Yindy, for her "Don't go in that street ! The triads will ransom and kidnap us !" To the whole camera and lighting crew, who made us never worry about anything technical. It just worked. To Anna, Eric and the Free-D Workshop team for having done great VFX in no time. To Christophe and Alexandra, from Tempesta Production, Etienne and Charles, from Digimage, for their generosity. To Tommy, for his amazing photography ( check his http://www.flickr.com/tgkw ), his sense of the decisive moment, and his vibrant colours. To the riders, George, Chun Chai 俊仔, Thai Chai 泰仔, Alex and Billy. Thanks for having made the rollerbladers come back. To all the actors and actresses, for their patience and because they really played the game. To Teresa. Thank you. For you being amazing, for your unique and silent way to talk to the camera. I'm shooting a short film with her, produced by Sophia. It should be finished in a few months.
To Anna, Neha and Yin Kei. Thank you for joining the team.
To my closest friends, Tommy, Samuel, Manu, and my family, for supporting me.
