"5 Astraea" is a large asteroid from the asteroid belt. Its surface is highly reflective and its composition is probably a mixture of nickel–iron with silicates of magnesium and iron. It is an S-type object in the Tholen classification system.
Astraea was the fifth asteroid discovered, on December 8, 1845, by K. L. Hencke and named for "Astræa", a goddess of justice named after the stars. It was his first of two asteroid discoveries. The second was 6 Hebe. An amateur astronomer and post office employee, Hencke was looking for 4 Vesta when he stumbled on Astraea. The King of Prussia awarded him an annual pension of 1,200 marks for the discovery.
Photometry indicates prograde rotation, that the north pole points in the direction of right ascension 9 h 52 min, declination 73° with a 5° uncertainty. This gives an axial tilt of about 33°.
Astraea is physically unremarkable but notable mainly because for 38 years it had been thought that there were only four asteroids. In terms of maximum brightness, it is indeed only the "seventeenth brightest" main-belt asteroid, being fainter than 192 Nausikaa and even, at rare near-perihelion oppositions, the highly eccentric carbonaceous 324 Bamberga. It will be at magnitude +8.7 on a favorable opposition on February 15, 2016.
After the discovery of Astraea, thousands of other asteroids would follow. Indeed, the discovery of Astraea proved to be the starting point for the eventual demotion of the four original asteroids to their current status, as it became apparent that these four were only the largest of a whole new type of celestial body.

The real boss here is Garl Vinland (Maiden Astraea's bodyguard) as Maiden doesn't attack you at all, even if you get right up in her face (Garl Vinland won't allow that though).
As you enter the fog you will see a few worshipping depraved ones, ignore them as they will not attack you.
As you enter you will see Garl Vinland blocking the path to the left, you can go down there and fight him head on if you wish, but that is the trickier way to deal with this boss battle (although it isn't too hard that way either).
Instead head down the path to the right all the way to the next bunch of worshippers, and you will see Garl run back towards Maiden to protect her. From here you could arrow her, but you would lose all strength in the arrows from here so don't bother.
Now backtrack the way you came, and down the path Garl was protecting and towards Maiden. As you approach Garl will approach you, but he will then back track. Get your free aim on Maiden and arrow her.
She has a healing miracle she uses, but as long as you keep the arrows flying towards her she won't have time to heal herself enough.
Once she is dealt with Garl is no longer a threat, so leave him (or fight him if you want) and head back to the Nexus.
Don't forget to return straight away though, cos you will see Garl's body armour and shield lying there now, collect that as the Dark Silver armor and Dark Silver shiled has fantastic magic protection!

We aim to burn this accursed swamp but many obstacles stand in our path. This video's a good example of how costly it is to underestimate encounters in Souls games. Looking back, maybe we should have simply slain Saint Astraea with a bow, but where's the fun in that?

Welcome to Lord Fussington's Walkthrough of Demon's Souls.
In the "Valley of Defilement 5-3," we descend into the depths of this vast, bleak valley to battle its final boss, "Maiden Astraea." She is easy to kill; Garl Vinland, her protector and possible lover, on the other hand, is not so easy. Also, the worst sort of swamp festers here - I suppose because it is the very bottom of the valley: it causes plague - oh, and plague babies rise from it to attack you. In other words, avoid the swamp as much as possible. You can ignore the depraved ones on the cliffside - or kill them; I certainly do.
Garl Vinland's moves mainly consist of smashing his rather heavy mace (Bramd) into your skull - he isn't picky about it being in one or both hands; his shield (Dark Silver Shield) is much better in his hands than in ours - it blocks much more than it should... so pretty much everything.
I do not recommend using a bow and arrows strategy on Vinland: he has high defense and blocks a lot - if your arrow is blocked, it will only do one damage. I suggest a strategy similar to the one in the video: provoke him into attacking and when he is recovering from smashing his mace into the ground, you can either slash, bash or fire a spell in his face.
I opt for the sword and shield method, but a spear held in both hands can work just as well - your rolls have to be much more precise though. In my experience, fire spells take forever, but homing soul arrow is brilliantly: cast the spell, provoke him into attacking, and it'll do great damage; you have to time it so that he doesn't block it with his shield.
However, if you do not want to fight Garl Vinland, you can just kill Maiden Astraea first: when you encounter him afterwards, he will not attack you, unless provoked; quit, reload, and his items will be waiting for you - as they would if you had killed him.
In terms of Maiden Astraea, you can kill her easily: her armour is really just Vinland. If you kill Vinland first, she will commit suicide when you talk to her. On the other hand, if you haven't killed Garl Vinland and opt to fight her with ranged attacks (e.g., bow and arrows on the cliffside), she will heal; your stats and weapons must cause enough damage to overcome her healing spell. Furthermore, if you haven't killed Garl Vinland and opt to fight her with melee attacks, she will use God's Wrath.
To be honest, the environment and Garl Vinland are more dangerous than Maiden Astraea, but patience and prudence can make this another very easy boss battle.

Welcome to Lord Fussington's Walkthrough of Demon's Souls. In the "Valley of Defilement 5-3," we descend into the depths of this vast, bleak valley to battle its final boss, "Maiden Astraea." She is easy to kill; Garl Vinland, her protector and possible lover, on the other hand, is not so easy. Also, the worst sort of swamp festers here - I suppose because it is the very bottom of the valley: it causes plague - oh, and plague babies rise from it to attack you. In other words, avoid the swamp as much as possible. You can ignore the depraved ones on the cliffside - or kill them; I certainly do. "5 Astraea" is a large asteroid from the asteroid belt. Its surface is highly reflective and its composition is probably a mixture of nickel–iron with silicates of magnesium and iron. It is an S-type object in the Tholen classification system.
Astraea was the fifth asteroid discovered, on December 8, 1845, by K. L. Hencke and named for "Astræa", a goddess of justice named after the stars. It was his first of two asteroid discoveries. The second was 6 Hebe. An amateur astronomer and post office employee, Hencke was looking for 4 Vesta when he stumbled on Astraea. The King of Prussia awarded him an annual pension of 1,200 marks for the discovery.
Photometry indicates prograde rotation, that the north pole points in the direction of right ascension 9 h 52 min, declination 73° with a 5° uncertainty. This gives an axial tilt of about 33°.
Astraea is physically unremarkable but notable mainly because for 38 years it had been thought that there were only four asteroids. In terms of maximum brightness, it is indeed only the "seventeenth brightest" main-belt asteroid, being fainter than 192 Nausikaa and even, at rare near-perihelion oppositions, the highly eccentric carbonaceous 324 Bamberga. It will be at magnitude +8.7 on a favorable opposition on February 15, 2016.
After the discovery of Astraea, thousands of other asteroids would follow. Indeed, the discovery of Astraea proved to be the starting point for the eventual demotion of the four original asteroids to their current status, as it became apparent that these four were only the largest of a whole new type of celestial body.

The real boss here is Garl Vinland (Maiden Astraea's bodyguard) as Maiden doesn't attack you at all, even if you get right up in her face (Garl Vinland won't allow that though).
As you enter the fog you will see a few worshipping depraved ones, ignore them as they will not attack you.
As you enter you will see Garl Vinland blocking the path to the left, you can go down there and fight him head on if you wish, but that is the trickier way to deal with this boss battle (although it isn't too hard that way either).
Instead head down the path to the right all the way to the next bunch of worshippers, and you will see Garl run back towards Maiden to protect her. From here you could arrow her, but you would lose all strength in the arrows from here so don't bother.
Now backtrack the way you came, and down the path Garl was protecting and towards Maiden. As you approach Garl will approach you, but he will then back track. Get your free aim on Maiden and arrow her.
She has a healing miracle she uses, but as long as you keep the arrows flying towards her she won't have time to heal herself enough.
Once she is dealt with Garl is no longer a threat, so leave him (or fight him if you want) and head back to the Nexus.
Don't forget to return straight away though, cos you will see Garl's body armour and shield lying there now, collect that as the Dark Silver armor and Dark Silver shiled has fantastic magic protection!

Welcome to Lord Fussington's Walkthrough of Demon's Souls.
In the "Valley of Defilement 5-3," we descend into the depths of this vast, bleak valley to battle its final boss, "Maiden Astraea." She is easy to kill; Garl Vinland, her protector and possible lover, on the other hand, is not so easy. Also, the worst sort of swamp festers here - I suppose because it is the very bottom of the valley: it causes plague - oh, and plague babies rise from it to attack you. In other words, avoid the swamp as much as possible. You can ignore the depraved ones on the cliffside - or kill them; I certainly do.
Garl Vinland's moves mainly consist of smashing his rather heavy mace (Bramd) into your skull - he isn't picky about it being in one or both hands; his shield (Dark Silver Shield) is much better in his hands than in ours - it blocks much more than it should... so pretty much everything.
I do not recommend using a bow and arrows strategy on Vinland: he has high defense and blocks a lot - if your arrow is blocked, it will only do one damage. I suggest a strategy similar to the one in the video: provoke him into attacking and when he is recovering from smashing his mace into the ground, you can either slash, bash or fire a spell in his face.
I opt for the sword and shield method, but a spear held in both hands can work just as well - your rolls have to be much more precise though. In my experience, fire spells take forever, but homing soul arrow is brilliantly: cast the spell, provoke him into attacking, and it'll do great damage; you have to time it so that he doesn't block it with his shield.
However, if you do not want to fight Garl Vinland, you can just kill Maiden Astraea first: when you encounter him afterwards, he will not attack you, unless provoked; quit, reload, and his items will be waiting for you - as they would if you had killed him.
In terms of Maiden Astraea, you can kill her easily: her armour is really just Vinland. If you kill Vinland first, she will commit suicide when you talk to her. On the other hand, if you haven't killed Garl Vinland and opt to fight her with ranged attacks (e.g., bow and arrows on the cliffside), she will heal; your stats and weapons must cause enough damage to overcome her healing spell. Furthermore, if you haven't killed Garl Vinland and opt to fight her with melee attacks, she will use God's Wrath.
To be honest, the environment and Garl Vinland are more dangerous than Maiden Astraea, but patience and prudence can make this another very easy boss battle.
