Stenka Razin ( Стенька Разин ) - a Russian Ballad
A Russian Ballad song about the 17th century Cossack Ottoman named Stenka Razin. Translated Lyrics: From beyond the island into the open, On the expanse of the waves of the river, Sail the brightly painted Ships with the sharp cutwaters. On the first ship, Stenka Razin, Sits in the embraces of the princess. He is celebrating his new marriage, Merry and drunk. But she, lowering her eyes, Neither alive nor dead, Silently listens to the drunken Atamans words. Behind them is heard a murmur, Theyve turned us into a woman. Just one night was spent with her. In the morning I myself became a woman. This murmur and mockery The fierce ataman did hear, And with a mighty arm, He took the Persian girl by the waist. His dark brow was knitted. The storm was advancing. With wild blood were filled The atamans eyes. I will spare nothing. I will give away her wild head. The powerful voice is heard On the nearby riverbanks. Volga, Volga, native mother, Volga, Russian river, You have never seen a gift From a Don Cossack ataman. And lest there be a commotion Among the sailing crowd, Volga, Volga, native nother, Receive the beauty. With a brawny arm he raises The beautiful princess, And he throws her overboard Into the onrushing wave. What, brothers, are you sad? Hey, Filka, you devil, dance! Lets sing a mournful song To the memory of her soul. From beyond the island into the open, On the expanse of the waves of the river, Sail the brightly painted Ships with the sharp cutwaters. Song of Stenka Razin. Russian folk song. Из-за острова на стрежень.
Краткая история о Стеньке Разине и персиянке здесь: www.sovsekretno.ru The folk song of Stenka Razin is very popular in Russia. Boris Shtokolov performes it with great feeling & expressiveness. Folk songs incarnate the voice, history & soul of the people whove created them, glorifying human feelings & aspirations. Folk songs arising from the necessity of man to give vent to his intermost feelings pertine to the most lively, versafile & emotional form of popular art. Whose heart can remain cold to the sounds of a slow Russian song with its stern grandeur & broadness of melody? These characteristics are true of "Song of Stepan Razin". In this video you can also see the pictures of Volga-river, which I've taken for this song in I-net & pieces from the film "Sadko".

"The Carnival Is Over" - "Stenka Razin" - Seekers Time Capsule
Most all fans of The Seekers know that when Tom Springfield wrote "The Carnival Is Over" he set his lyrics to an old Russian folk song, "Senka Razin". I've done a time capsule for Carnival before, but I wanted to make another one including some of that old folk song. It starts out with the Russian song and is followed by several "Carnival" performances by The Seekers over the years.

1202. Stenka Razin (Dmitri Volnitsa) - in English
In case some of you do not understand Russian, here is the English version of "Stenka Razin", the song I put up earlier today. Stepan (Sten'ka) Timofeyevich Razin was a Cossack leader who began as a bandit but later fought for the poor against the wealthy lords under the rule of the Tsar in South Russia. In 1670 he led a rebellion against the government, capturing Astrakhan and establishing a Cossack republic along the Volga River, before advancing towards Moscow. In 1671 he was captured and taken to Moscow, where he was tortured and quartered alive in the Red Square. Prince Ivan Miloslavsky restored full government control in November, 1671. Dmitri Sadovnikov wrote the lyrics of this popular Russian song about Stenka Razin in 1883. It is also known as "Ponizovaya Volnitsa" and "Volga, Volga Mat' Rodnaya. He used a traditional Russian tune, which was later adapted by Tom Springfield for his song "The Carnival is Over", a big hit for The Seekers in 1965. One of the very first Russian films was based on this song, Vladimir Romashkov's 1908 10 minute movie, "Stenka Razin." My Choice 314 - Paul Mauriat: Stenka Razin
Beautiful relaxing music showing photos of sceneries. Stenka Razin, Op. 13, is a symphonic poem composed by Alexander Glazunov in 1885. Dedicated to the memory of Alexander Borodin, it is one of the few compositions written by Glazunov on a nationalist subject and is composed in a style reminiscent of Borodin and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Glazunov's composition dramatizes and romanticizes the career of the Cossack Stenka Razin. After leading raids against the Tsarist regime, Razin was captured and given amnesty in exchange of an oath of allegiance. He broke his promise, leading an army of several hundred thousand in an attempt to overthrow the government. Captured again, he was executed in 1672. Born into a well-to-do Don Cossack family, Stenka Razin grew up amid the tension caused by the inability of runaway serfs, who were continually escaping from Poland and Russia to the Don Cossack area, to find land and comfortably settle in the prosperous Cossack communities. In 1667 Razin made himself the head (hetman) of a small band of landless newcomers and adventurers and established a new Cossack outpost. ===================================== Our ...
