Indiana University Press, also known as IU Press, is an academic publisher at Indiana University that specializes in the humanities and social sciences. It was founded in 1950. Its headquarters are located in Bloomington, Indiana.

IU Press is currently one of the largest public university presses in the United States.^{[citation needed]} It publishes 140 new books annually, in addition to 29 academic journals. Its current catalog comprises some 2,000 titles.

Indiana University Press mainly publishes in the following areas: African, African American, Asian, cultural, Jewish, Holocaust, Middle East, Russian and East European, and women's and gender studies; anthropology, film, folklore, history, bioethics, music, paleontology, philanthropy, philosophy, and religion.

IU Press also undertakes extensive regional publishing under its Quarry Books imprint.

A university press (U.P.) is an academic, nonprofit publishing house. Most but not all are affiliated with a large research university. They publish work that has been reviewed by scholars in the field. They produces mainly scholarly works, but also often have "popular" titles designed to reach their target audience, such as books on religion or on regional topics. Because scholarly books are mostly unprofitable, university presses may also publish textbooks and reference works, which tend to have larger audiences and sell more copies. Most university presses operate at a loss and are subsidized by their owners; others are required to break even.^[1] In China, university presses are profit-making institutions for their academic owners. Demand has fallen as library budgets are cut and the online sales of used books undercut the new book market. Many presses are experimenting with electronic publishing.^[2]

Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press are the two oldest and largest university presses in the world. They have numerous branches around the world.

University presses emerged in the United States in the late 19th century. Cornell University started one in 1869 but had to close it down; Johns Hopkins University Press has been in continuous operation since 1878.^[3] In 2008, the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) has 125 member presses, of which 95 were operated by universities. Growth has been sporadic, with 14 presses established in the 1940s, 11 in the 1950s; and 19 in the 1960. Since 1970, 16 universities have opened presses and several have closed.^[4] Today the largest university press in the United States is the University of Chicago Press.^[5] University presses tend to develop specialized areas of expertise. For example, Yale publishes many art books, the University of Chicago publishes many academic journals, the University of Illinois press specializes in labor history, and MIT Press publishes linguistics and architecture titles.

Indiana University (IU) is a multi-campus public university system in the state of Indiana, United States. Awards[link]

Indiana University has three medals to recognize individuals.^[8]

• The University Medal, the only IU medal that requires approval from the Board of Trustees, was created in 1982 by then IU President John W. Ryan and is the highest award bestowed by the University. It honors individuals for singular or noteworthy contributions, including service to the university and achievement in arts, letters, science and law. The first recipient was Thomas T. Solley, former director of the IU Art Museum.^[8][9]
• President's Medal for Excellence, a reproduction in fine silver of the symbolic jewel of office worn by the president at ceremonial occasions, is rich in meaning. The first recipients were member of the Beaux Arts Trio on September 20, 1985. It honors individuals for distinction in public service, service to Indiana University, achievement in a profession, and/or extraordinary merit and achievement in the arts, humanities, science, education, and industry.^[8]
• Thomas Hart Benton Mural Medallion "recognizes individuals who are shining examples of the values of IU and the universal academic community." President Ryan was the first to award this honor. It was first awarded to the president of Nanjing University on July 21, 1986. It honors individuals for distinction in public office or service, a significant relationship to Indiana University or Indiana, significant service to IU programs, students, or faculty, significant contribution to research or support for research.^[8]

Indiana University has a number of ways to recognize the accomplishments of faculty.^[10]

• Distinguished Professorships - Indiana University's most prestigious academic appointment
• University Distinguished Teaching Awards - recognizing "shining examples of dedication and excellence"
• Thomas Ehrlich Award for Excellence in Service Learning - recognizing excellence in service learning. The recipient is also the IU nominee for the national Campus Compact Thomas Ehrlich Award for Service Learning.
