Episcopal Ordination in Croatia Byzantine Rite
On Saturday, July 4.2009, Nikola Nino Kekić, the newly appointed bishop of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Križevci, was ordained in the Greek Catholic cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Križevci. The consecrator was Msgr. Slavomir Miklovš, the apostolic administrator of the Eparchy of Križevci. The co-consecrators were the archbishop and metropolitan of Zagreb, Cardinal Josip Bozanić, and the apostolic nuncio in the Republic of Croatia, Archbishop Mario Roberto Cassari, who read the bull of appointment at the beginning of the ceremony. In the homily, Cardinal Bozanić noted that this episcopal ordination conducted according to the Byzantine-Slavic Rite in the Greek Catholic cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity in Križevci has historical significance. According to the chronicles, all the bishops of Kreževci have been installed outside their episcopal see. He also called attention to the significance of this Byzantine-Slavic ceremony of episcopal ordination, which consists of three parts: the announcement of the appointment, profession of faith and consecration. Addressing Bishop Kekić, Cardinal Bozanić noted that the motto he has chosen, "God is Love," expresses the Christian image of God in a concise and very clear manner. Since God first loved us, Christian love is not a commandment but rather a response to the gift of love. The cardinal urged Bishop Kekić as a good shepherd to assemble his scattered and small flock of Greek Catholic Croats, Rusyns and Ukrainians in Croatia ...

Vancouver, Canada: September 1, 2012 - His Beatitude Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk, 42-years-old and in Vancouver for the second time after fifteen years, sings the Divine Liturgy to mark the beginning of the new liturgical year. The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is the largest Eastern Church in full union with the Apostolic See of Peter. Many have suggested their liturgy to be the most beautiful on the planet earth.

My Big Fat Byzantine Catholic Wedding
After we say our vows, the priest prepares to put the crowns on our heads, as is traditional in Eastern Christian (in this case, Byzantine Rite Catholic) weddings. This is at the Byzantine Cathedral of St. Mary in Sherman Oaks, California. (Sorry there aren't more videos to go with this - we only wound up with this one!)

The Noble Joseph - Byzantine Catholic Lenten Troparion
This is a tropar sung on good Friday (and in part by the priest during the Liturgy). The hymn at the sepulcher is one of the most touching moments of the year, in my opinion, as all sing together and prostrate themselves thrice before the Epitaphios. I have tried to make it with all possible solemnity. I have not included lyrics or translation because the lyrics could not be located; several translations to English are easily found on the web.

Object No. 3: Byzantine marriage crown. Presented by the Rev'd Dr Simon Jones .
A distinctive element in the marriage rites of the Eastern Church was the crowning of the bride and groom. This may have had its origins in pre-Christian times and, as the high point of the liturgy, it continues to occupy a central place within the ritual of eastern wedding ceremonies today. These bronze Byzantine crowns date back to the 10th century, and Dr Simon Jones of Oxford University will explore their significance for our understanding of eastern Christianity and the rite of marriage.
Dr Jones presented the third object in the series, a Byzantine marriage crown, on 3rd November 2011 Deddington Parish Church.

THE HUSHED MUSIC (teaser 7.30)
David and Diego are the only Byzantine Catholic monks in South America. Their days pass in this monastery, that was recently founded by them in a dry and isolated place in the province of Buenos Aires, and that is still under construction. David paints icons, Diego translates Christian texts from Greek and Russian into Spanish. They both belong to the Byzantine rite, akin to the tradition of early Christianity.Nature, which every day draws their landscape is filtered through the windows of the cells, thus setting the timing for each activity and daily routine. The landscape turns into silence. And in this silences mystery plunges and becomes landscape. Here Nature is a sign of the invisible. Of the absence. One day this routine is disrupted by the arrival of Pablo, a visitor who wants to join the congregation and is accepted as an aspirant. Pablols reasons for joining the Congregation are not disclosed. Each one speaks . Each one speaks what is kept silent. This is the sheet music for the hushed music.

Medieval Byzantine Chant from the Basilian Monastery of Grottaferrata. Title: "Κοινωνικόν: Το πνεύμα σου το αγαθόν οδηγήσει με" (Communion chant) Performers: Cappella Romana Album: "Byzantium in Rome - Medieval Byzantine Chant from Grottaferrata" ~ The Basilian Monastery of the Mother of God (Theotokos) was founded by St Nilus the Younger in the town of Grottaferrata, 20 km south of Rome, in 1004. It was a Byzantine Rite abbey following the Rule of St Basil and was (uncommonly) under the See of Rome and remained so after the Great Schism. Two of its abbots, St Nilus the Younger and St Bartholomew the Younger, are saints of both the Latin and the Greek Church as they both died before the schism. In later years one of its most illustrious abbots in commendam was Cardinal Bessarion, himself a Basilian monk. From the day of its foundation to modern times the Monastery has remained in Byzantine rite, despite being so near to Rome and despite the uniformity of rite imposed by several councils - most notably the Council of Trent. Moreover, due to the loss of contact with the rest of the East and the Basilian Order (which in its vast majority remained Orthodox), the Abbey uses the Byzantine chant as delivered at the date of its foundation, unaffected by later changes that occurred in the east. ~ The lyrics of this piece are the second part of the 10th passage from Psalm 142

The Miracle of Damascus: Part One [Lo Res for Dial-up]
May we all be one on Earth as Christ is One with the Father in Heaven. This begins with forgiving and loving one another. Catholic Digital Studio has been given permission from Rick Salbato of Unity Publishing to re-produce and re-cut this 5 1/2 hour documentary series, The Miracle of Damascus, about a church-approved Marian apparition and a Syrian mystic named Myrna Nazzour. She has stigmata, experiences visions of both the Blessed Mother and Jesus, and exudes Olive Oil with healing properties, from her face, hands and eyes. The Icon of Soufanieh also exudes the same oil, which has healed and blessed a vast multitude. Myrna is from the Byzantine Rite of the Catholic Church, specifically Melkite. A Rite represents a church tradition about how the sacraments are to be celebrated. The Catholic Church has four major Rites: Roman, Antiochean, Alexandrian and Byzantine. Byzantine.net defines the Byzantine Catholic Church and its history, "... As the disciples brought the Gospel to different parts of the world, they adapted ceremonies of the Liturgy to the customs and music of that people. In the end, four great centers of Christianity emerged with distinctive Christian customs, but the same faith. These centers were located in the great cities of Jerusalem, Antioch, Rome and Alexandria. A couple of centuries later when the capital of the Roman empire was moved to the Eastern city of Byzantium and renamed Constantinople, an adaptation of the Antioch way of celebrating Liturgy ...
