MEGHALAYA TRAILER (6 mins)
Meghalaya is located on the outskirt of Himalaya in India. It is one of the largest matrilineal societies on Earth. Here, it’s a women’s world. For over 2300 years, women here have been handing down the family property from mother to daughter. Women head businesses, farms, and industries and, together with the maternal uncle, make decision. Moreover, women prevail over men in the private sphere. When a man marries, he must leave everything and move into his wife’s house. Often, he is the one who stays to raise the children. If his wife grows tried of him, she can throw him out and he will go back to his mother. In this society, parents pray for a girl.
Director Isaac Isitan has been following this community with his camera.
