Helmut Newton, born Helmut Neustädter (October 31, 1920 – January 23, 2004) was a German-Australian photographer. He was a "prolific, widely imitated fashion photographer whose provocative, erotically charged black-and-white photos were a mainstay of Vogue and other publications."

Early life

Born in Berlin to a German-Jewish button-factory owner and an American mother, Newton attended the Heinrich-von-Treitschke-Realgymnasium and the American School in Berlin. Interested in photography from the age of 12 when he purchased his first camera, he worked for the German photographer Yva (Elsie Neulander Simon) from 1936. The increasingly oppressive restrictions placed on Jews by the Nuremberg laws meant that his father lost control of the factory in which he manufactured buttons and buckles; he was briefly interned in a concentration camp on 'Kristallnacht,' November 9, 1938, which finally compelled the family to leave Germany. Newton's parents fled to Chile. He was issued with a passport just after turning 18, and left Germany on December 5, 1938. At Trieste he boarded the 'Conte Rosso' (along with about 200 others escaping the Nazis) intending to journey to China. After arriving in Singapore he decided to remain as a reporter for the ''Straits Times'' and worked as a portrait photographer.

Life in Australia

Newton was interned by British authorities while in Singapore, and was sent to Australia on board the Queen Mary, arriving in Sydney on September 27, 1940. Internees travelled to the camp of Tatura, Victoria by train under armed guard. He was released from internment in 1942, and briefly worked as a fruit picker in northern Victoria. In April 1942, he enlisted with the Australian Army and worked as a truck driver. After the war in 1945, he became an Australian citizen and changed his name to Newton in 1946. In 1948, he married actress June Browne, who performed under the stage name June Brunell. She later became a successful photographer under the ironic pseudonym Alice Springs (after Alice Springs, the central Australian town).

In 1946, Newton set up a studio in fashionable Flinders Lane and worked on fashion and theater photography in the affluent post-war years. He shared his first joint exhibition in May 1953 with Wolfgang Sievers, a German refugee like himself who had also served in the same company. The exhibition of 'New Visions in Photography' was displayed at the Federal Hotel in Collins Street and was probably the first glimpse of 'New Objectivity' photography in Australia. Newton went into partnership with Henry Talbot, a fellow German Jew who had also been interned at Tatura, and his association with the studio continued even after 1957, when he left Australia for London. The studio was renamed 'Helmut Newton and Henry Talbot'.

London 1950s

Newton's growing reputation as a fashion photographer was rewarded when he secured a commission to illustrate fashions in a special Australian supplement for Vogue magazine, published in January 1956. He won a 12-month contract with British Vogue and left for London in February 1957, leaving Talbot to manage the business. Newton left the magazine before the end of his contract and went to Paris, where he worked for French and German magazines. He returned to Melbourne in March 1959 to a contract for Australian Vogue.

Paris 1960s

Newton settled in Paris in 1961 and continued work as a fashion photographer. His works appeared in magazines including, most significantly, French ''Vogue'' and ''Harper's Bazaar''. He established a particular style marked by erotic, stylized scenes, often with sado-masochistic and fetishistic subtexts. A heart attack in 1970 slowed Newton's output, but his notoriety continued to increase, most notably with his 1980 "Big Nudes" series, which marked the pinnacle of his erotic-urban style, underpinned with excellent technical skills. Newton also worked in portraiture and more fantastical studies.

Newton shot a number of pictorials for Playboy, including pictorials of Nastassia Kinski and Kristine DeBell . Original prints of the photographs from his August 1976 pictorial of DeBell, "200 Motels, or How I Spent My Summer Vacation" were sold at auctions of Playboy archives by Bonhams in 2002 for $21,075, and by Christies in December 2003 for $26,290.

Establishment of Helmut Newton Foundation

Newton was fond of his hometown of Berlin, and in October 2003 he donated an extensive photo collection to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, establishing the Helmut Newton Foundation. The foundation's mission is the conservation, protection and presentation of the oeuvre of Helmut Newton and Alice Springs.

Death

In his later life, Newton lived in Monte Carlo and Los Angeles. He was in an accident on January 23, 2004, when his car sped out of control and hit a wall in the driveway of the Chateau Marmont which had for several years served as his residence in Southern California. He died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. His ashes are buried next to Marlene Dietrich at the Städtischer Friedhof III in Berlin.

Cynthia Ann "Cindy" Crawford (born February 20, 1966) is an American model. Known for her trademark mole just above her lip, Crawford has adorned hundreds of magazine covers throughout her career. She was named #3 on VH1's ''40 Hottest Hotties of the 90s''. Her success at modeling made her a celebrity that has led to roles in television and film, and to work as a spokesperson.

Early life

Crawford was born in DeKalb, Illinois, the daughter of Jennifer Sue Crawford-Moluf (née Walker) and John Crawford (not to be confused with actor and former Mouseketeer Johnny Crawford, of ''The Rifleman'' fame). She was discovered at the age of 16 by a newspaper photographer. He noticed Cindy at work during her summer job of detasseling corn and took a picture of her. The photo and positive feedback she received were enough to convince her to take up modeling. She entered the Elite Model Management's Look of the Year contest at 17 and was the runner-up. The Elite modeling agency in Chicago then started representing her.

Crawford graduated from DeKalb High School in 1984, as valedictorian. She won an academic scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University, which she attended for only one quarter. She dropped out in order to pursue a full-time modeling career. After working for photographer Victor Skrebneski in Chicago, Cindy moved to Manhattan in 1986; she was signed with the Elite New York modeling agency.

Career

During the 1980s and 1990s, Cindy Crawford was among the most popular supermodels, and a ubiquitous presence on magazine covers, runways, and in fashion campaigns. She was repeatedly and frequently featured on the cover of many magazines, including: ''Vogue'', ''W'', ''People'', ''Harper's Bazaar'', ''Elle'', ''Cosmopolitan'', and ''Allure''. A partial count in 1998 totalled over 400 appearances. Crawford also appeared in many fashion campaigns during her career, including those for Gianni Versace, Escada, Revlon, Ink. She has also worked for Omega, Maybelline, and Clairol.

In 1987, Crawford appeared during the opening credits of the Michael J. Fox film ''The Secret of My Success''. Three years later she appeared in the video for George Michael's "Freedom '90" alongside other models Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz and Naomi Campbell. Subsequently, Crawford played the lost love of Jon Bon Jovi in the video for his 1994 version of "''Please Come Home For Christmas''".

The red Versace dress which she wore to the 63rd Academy Awards in 1991 had a major influence on fashion, and many copies and fakes of the dress were produced. In 1992, Crawford—through GoodTimes Home Video and her company Craw Daddy Productions—made an exercise video with Radu Teodorescu named ''Cindy Crawford: Shape Your Body''; although criticised by some for being unsafe, it was hugely successful and led to two equally lucrative followups, ''Cindy Crawford: The Next Challenge'' in 1993 (again with Radu) and ''Cindy Crawford: A New Dimension'' in 2000 (the latter, made with fitness expert Kathy Kaehler and produced not long after Cindy gave birth to her first child, was aimed at new mothers getting back into shape). In 2001, Cindy also made a shorter fitness video aimed at children, ''Mini-Muscles with Cindy Crawford and the Fit-wits'', an animated production featuring the voices of Cindy (who also appears at the beginning in live action), Radu and Kobe Bryant.

The inaugural issue of ''George'', a short lived political magazine in the 1990s, featured Crawford dressed like George Washington on the cover. In 2005, The American Society of Magazine Editors listed it as the 22nd best magazine cover of the last 40 years.

Crawford is 5 feet 9 inches tall, with brown hair and eyes. Her measurements are 34"-26"-35". Crawford's trademark is a mole (or "beauty mark") above her upper lip. She is so closely associated with this physical feature that she appeared in an advertising campaign for chocolates featuring commercials wherein she "licked off" her own mole. During the beginning of her career, the mole was removed from her earlier modeling pictures, including her first ''Vogue'' cover. Her resemblance early in her career to model Gia Carangi led her to being known as "Baby Gia".

Crawford has also been on TV and in films. From 1989 to 1995, Crawford was host of MTV's ''House of Style''. In the early 1990s, Crawford starred in the Pepsi and Pepsi Stuff advertising. In 1995, Crawford broke into movies as the female lead in the movie ''Fair Game''. Her performance was panned by critics-- Leonard Maltin commented "In her acting debut, supermodel Crawford makes a good jogger." The film was also a financial failure, with expenses of $50 million and $11 million takings at the box office. In 2001, she costarred as part of an ensemble cast in ''The Simian Line''. Again the film was not successful or critically acclaimed, but Crawford's acting was not criticized. She has had many lesser roles guest starring on TV and as supporting roles, often playing herself. For example, in 2000, she was one of the celebrities (along with Victoria Silvstedt, Anna Falchi and Megan Gale) playing themselves in the Italian comedy ''Bodyguards - Guardie del corpo''.

In July 1988, she posed nude for ''Playboy'' magazine in a shoot by photographer Herb Ritts. In October 1998, Crawford returned to the pages of ''Playboy'' for a second nude pictorial, again taken by Ritts.

Crawford has consistently ranked highly on lists of the world's sexiest people. She was ranked number 5 on ''Playboy'''s list of the 100 Sexiest Stars of the 20th century. A 1997 ''Shape'' magazine survey of 4,000 picked her as the second (after Demi Moore) most beautiful woman in the world. In 2002, Crawford was named one of the 50 Most Beautiful People by ''People'' magazine. In her forties, she claimed #26 in the 2006 Hot 100 issue of ''Maxim'' magazine.

After modeling

Crawford quit modeling in 2000; however, she still appears from time to time in (and on the covers of) fashion magazines in new shoots. She continues to provide celebrity endorsement for a variety of projects. In 2005, Crawford created a line of beauty products with Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh called Meaningful Beauty for Guthy-Renker. Crawford has admitted to regularly receiving certain cosmetic procedures, including Botox and vitamin injections. She first saw a plastic surgeon at the age of 29.

In 2005, Crawford launched a new line of furniture under the "Cindy Crawford Home Collection" name. This collection is manufactured by HM Richards Inc., and is sold through many retailers including Art Van Furniture and Rooms To Go. She assisted in the creation of the line by directing the designers to include certain features, colors, or styles that fit the needs of families or reflected her own tastes. She also has a furniture line with Raymour & Flanigan and launched another home goods line with J. C. Penney in late 2009.

Crawford came back to modeling in May 2011, landing the cover of May 2011 issue of ''Vogue'' Mexico.

Personal life

Crawford was married to actor Richard Gere between 1991 and 1995; although they had no children, she cited him as one of the more influential people in her life (after her parents). She has been married to Rande Gerber since May 29, 1998, with whom she has two children, Presley Walker (born July 2, 1999) and Kaia Jordan (born September 3, 2001). She currently resides in Malibu, California.

Activism and charity work

When Crawford was 10 years old, her younger brother Jeff - whom she continues to praise as "the fourth most influential person in my life" - died of leukemia. Since becoming a model, Crawford has made childhood leukemia a focal point of her charity work, donating proceeds of her calendars to medical research. She is also an honorary board member of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

In 2007, she became an official supporter of the Ronald McDonald House Charities and is a member of their celebrity board, called the Friends of RMHC. Crawford is on the Honorary Committee of the California Wildlife Center.

Rômulo Pires (born June 6, 1983) is a Brazilian male model. Romulo is of Italian and Brazilian ancestry.

Pires was working as a mechanic when a woman with a flat tire said he was attractive and had the skill for modeling. He subsequently entered a model search held by Elite Model Management of Brazil and won the first place. However, his modeling career stalled until Karl Lagerfeld took notice of him two years later.

Before walking his first runway, Romulo was hired to appear in high profile campaigns for Chanel and Lagerfeld Gallery. Life and career

Early life

Wolf Hudson was born on November 24, 1984, in New York, New York, and is of mixed ancestry: French, Afro-Latin American/Dominican descent. Hudson briefly lived in the Dominican Republic in his early teens, but grew up in the Bronx for most of his youth. Hudson started as a Pop and lock dancer, joining a Hip-Hop dance group in High School. During that time he mastered the dance styles of Michael Jackson. At age 18, he began studying Method Acting and Jazz dance at the New Dance Group Arts Center in New York. Hudson performed in several theater, dance and independent film productions.

Pornography career (2006-2009)

Hudson started his porn career in late 2006 at age 21 in New York. Michael Lucas gave Hudson his first role in a pornographic film in Lucas Entertainment's ''Michael Lucas' Auditions Vol. 22''. He later moved to San Francisco in early 2007 to focus in adult industry full time and worked for porn studio Factory Videos. Hudson had an early desire to work with director Chi Chi LaRue, and began attempting to contact her. After receiving personal pictures from him, LaRue contacted Hudson, expressing a desire to work with him. Their first film together was ''Suck It Up''.

In 2007, Hudson took part in Falcon Entertainment's relaunching of ''Jocks Studios'', after the studios two-year hiatus, with ''Road Trip Vol.1 - Russian River'' to coincide with the 35th anniversary of Falcon. Hudson gained popularity as a dancer, earning the title "Porn Dancer" among gay porn viewers. He gained further notoriety for dancing naked to Michael Jackson in the movie ''Mug Shots'', which became a hit in gay porn blogs in 2008. Hudson was cast in the worlds first gay porn sitcom "Dirty Tricks", which later made it available on DVD. The comic-erotic series earned a brief moment of pop culture infamy in early 2008 when performer James “Crazy James" Zinkland was cast on the reality series ''Big Brother 9''.

In February 2008, Hudson made the sudden announcement that he was leaving gay porn and entering into straight adult films. He changed his stage name to "Kane Rivers", in honor of porn legend and friend Sharon Kane. He signed with LA Direct Models after being referred by Lexi Love and had plans to move to Los Angeles. Though LA Direct represents former gay porn models like Christian, he was dropped after it was revealed that he had a gay porn past, for which he initially denied, but later admitted. He vowed he would to continue using "Wolf Hudson" as his stage name.

In August 2008, he co-starred in the GayVN Award-winning 2008 bisexual film ''Shifting Gears'', directed by Chi Chi LaRue. The film drew controversy when the term Straight-for-pay (a play on word for Gay-for-pay) was coined to reference performer Blake Riley's first encounter with a woman (Shy Love) and liking it. Riley received most of the criticism, including Hudson and LaRue. He worked with porn starlet Kimberly Kane for Kink.com's ''Men In Pain'', Kane’s first-time topping a man on-camera. Hudson has been one of the most public faces of Kink.com's ''Bound Gods'', performing and doing major events like the 2008 Folsom Street Fair, where he took part in live BDSM demonstrations with director Van Darkholme. Unzipped Magazine named Hudson "One of porn's hottest new performers" in the October 2008 issue and receiving praise from Lucas himself, quoted as saying: "I think he has good looks and everything that it takes to be a porn star…Anyone who doesn’t invite him into their movie is missing out on a potential great scene".

Hudson appeared in the third season of the Canadian TV show ''Webdreams'', which followed Jet Set Men directors Chris Steele and Chad Donovan. On October 14, 2008, he became the first male porn star to appear on Kerrang! Radio's ''The Night Before'' with UK host Nick Margerrison.

Hudson turned down an offer to appear on a January 22, 2009 episode of ''The Tyra Banks Show'' concerning Gay-for-pay performers. He expressed his reservations about going on there because of how the show could twist things around to make the guys look bad. In a January 20, 2009 interview with ''Unzipped Magazine'', he stated that he will scale back on gay porn to pursue work in straight porn. But one month later, Hudson surprised the industry by signing a one-year contract with Los Angeles based internet studio CockyBoys.com as an exclusive model. His unusual exclusive contract applies solely to the gay side of the adult business, but allows him the flexibility to shoot straight-adult content as well, an industry first. This is a controversial move since its hard for a gay performer to crossover into the straight market and Hudson plans on doing both at the same time. He is the second major porn star to go web only, with Jesse Santana being the first for CockyBoys as well.

Hudson and Chi Chi LaRue appeared in the first ever internet telecast; to announce the 2009 GayVN Award Nominations. In March 2009, he became the first fan-selected co-host of the Grabby Awards, along side LaRue, Chicago drag queen Honey West, and Blake Riley, Fans were allowed for the first time to choose their favorite porn star to co-host.

Hudson made his directorial debut in 2009, with online studio CockyBoys.com. Known for his creative, experimental approach to gay porn, with plans to expand his horizons by directing for the company. The first scene he directed paired himself with Jesse Santana and gained rave reviews from critics. On July 2009, Hudson was one of the featured performers at Hustler Magazine's 35th Anniversary celebration in Santa Monica, California.

Following the death of pop icon Michael Jackson, in late 2009, Hudson made a short film dance tribute to the hit song Billie Jean. Jackson was Hudson's greatest dance influence and was devastated by his untimely death.

Pornography career (present)

Hudson is set to appear in the forthcoming Bruce LaBruce independent feature L.A. Zombie, starring François Sagat, due out in early 2010. He also makes an appearance in director Ed Powers' new book/documentary ''Porntography'' about the adult film industry, filming a sex scene with FTM porn star Buck Angel. Angel mentions Hudson as one of his favorite male performers to work with.

Personal life

Hudson identifies as heterosexual, even going as far as to call himself a "sexualist", instead of the term Gay-for-pay. He is quoted as saying, "I am not conventional.
