Birmingham (
i/ˈbɜrmɪŋəm/ BUR-ming-əm, locally /ˈbɜrmɪŋɡəm/ BUR-ming-gəm) is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands of England. It is the most populous British city outside the capital London, with a population of 1,036,900 (2010 estimate), and lies at the heart of the West Midlands conurbation, the second most populous urban area in the United Kingdom with a population of 2,284,093 (2001 census). Birmingham's metropolitan area is also the United Kingdom's second most populous with a population of 3,683,000.
A medium-sized market town during the medieval period, Birmingham grew to international prominence in the 18th century at the heart of the Midlands Enlightenment and subsequent Industrial Revolution, which saw the town at the forefront of worldwide developments in science, technology and economic organisation, producing a series of innovations that laid many of the foundations of modern industrial society. By 1791 it was being hailed as "the first manufacturing town in the world". Birmingham's distinctive economic profile, with thousands of small workshops practising a wide variety of specialised and highly-skilled trades, encouraged exceptional levels of creativity and innovation and provided a diverse and resilient economic base for industrial prosperity that was to last into the final quarter of the 20th century. Its resulting high level of social mobility also fostered a culture of broad-based political radicalism, that under leaders from Thomas Attwood to Joseph Chamberlain was to give it a political influence unparalleled in Britain outside London and a pivotal role in the development of British democracy.

Bradford (i/ˈbrædfəd/) lies at the heart of the City of Bradford, a metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, in Northern England. It is situated in the foothills of the Pennines, 8.6 miles (13.8 km) west of Leeds, and 16 miles (25.7 km) northwest of Wakefield. Bradford became a municipal borough in 1847, and received its charter as a city in 1897. Following local government reform in 1974, city status was bestowed upon the wider metropolitan borough.
Bradford has a population of 293,717, making it the fourteenth-most populous settlement in the United Kingdom. Bradford forms part of the West Yorkshire Urban Area conurbation which in 2001 had a population of 1.5 million and is part of the Leeds-Bradford Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), the third largest in the UK after London and Manchester, with an estimated population in the 2004 Urban Audit of 2.4 million.
Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Bradford rose to prominence during the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture, particularly wool. It was a boomtown of the Industrial Revolution, and amongst the earliest industrialised settlements, rapidly becoming the "wool capital of the world". The area's access to a supply of coal, iron ore and soft water facilitated the growth of Bradford's manufacturing base, which, as textile manufacture grew, led to an explosion in population and was a stimulus to civic investment; Bradford has fine Victorian architecture including the grand Italianate City Hall.

Lake Abaya
Lake Abaya (Abaya Hayk in Amharic) is a lake in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region of Ethiopia. It was named Lake Margherita by the Italian explorer Vittorio Bottego, the first European commonly thought to visit the lake, to honor the wife of king Umberto I of Italy, Queen Margherita. This name appears in older publications, and currently is rarely used.
However, the American explorer Arthur Donaldson Smith records that the local inhabitants, who included an eye witness of the event, told him that the Italian explorer Eugene Ruspoli (died 1891) was killed by an elephant near the lake, which happened before Bottego reached Lake Abaya.
Lake Abaya is located in the Main Ethiopian Rift, east of the Guge Mountains. It is fed on its northern shore by the Bilate which rises on the southern slopes of Mount Gurage, and the Gidabo. The town of Arba Minch lies on its southwestern shore, and the southern shores are part of the Nechisar National Park. Just to the south is Lake Chamo. Lake Abaya is 60 kilometers long and 20 wide, with a surface area of 1162 square kilometers. It has a maximum depth of 13.1 meters and is at an elevation of 1285 meters. There are a number of islands in this lake, the largest being Aruro; others include Gidicho, Welege, Galmaka, and Alkali. The lake is red due to a high load of suspended sediments. Lake Abaya does not always have an outflow, but in some years it overflows into Lake Chamo.

The first designs are in! The challenge they got from the first episode was to create an abaya for Emirati digital artist Sumayyah Al Suwaidi. Sumayyah is going to have a Ramadan Art Bazaar featuring 20 artists with many VIPs attending, so she needs to be wearing something unique with colors that aren't 'loud'. Sumayyah also loves vintage, so she asked if they can include an element of that into their designs as well. See the designs and let us know what you think!

Glittering embroidery, blinking stones and funky colours slowly make their way on the black Yemeni abaya dress. In recent months, the traditional abaya - also called "balto" in Yemen - has increasingly turned into a funky accessory. In Hadda Street in the capital Sana'a, boutiques display the latest creations inspired from the Gulf. [Sanad Al-Amari, Shop Manager, Bint Al-Khalidji]: "The business goes well, with the new fashion designs and changes in fashion and renewal of everything." His prices start at 150 dollars but go up to 500 dollars per balto. Local businessman Taha Omar, who runs another abaya store downtown, is also delighted about the shopping spree. TAHA OMAR, SHOP MANAGER OF AL-ANOOD: "There are unique types of fabrics, different from normal market like frizz or crimpling models. New, special things different from the market." The new-style abayas are made of fabrics such as Japanese crepe or chiffon, and produced in other Gulf countries. The details are then attached to the garment in local handicraft workshops in Sana'a. The abaya "cloak" (Arabic: عباية ʿabāyah or عباءة ʿabā'ah, plural عبائات /عبايات ʿabāyāt), sometimes also called an aba, is a simple, loose over-garment, essentially a robe-like dress, worn by some women in parts of the Islamic world including in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.[1] Traditional abayat are black and may be either a large square of fabric draped from the shoulders or head or a long caftan. The abaya covers the whole body except the face, feet, and hands. It can be worn with the niqāb, a face veil covering all but the eyes. Some women choose to wear long black gloves, so their hands are covered as well.
The Indonesian and Malaysian women's traditional dress kebaya gets its name from the abaya.

Often the Quranic quote, "O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters, and the believing women, to cover themselves with a loose garment. They will thus be recognised and no harm will come to them" 33:59 (Translated by Ahmed Ali) is given as the argument for wearing the abaya.
The abaya is most common in countries with large Salafi Muslim populations, as the entire body, including face and hands are considered elements of the awrah: that which should be concealed in public from males unrelated by blood or marriage.

Outside the few Arab states and Saudi Arabia, in nations with large Muslim populations, such as India, Indonesia and Iranit is uncommon, however many in those countries do wear it.
Middle East[link]
In Saudi Arabia, they require women to cover in public.[2] In Iran, the cover is often referred to as a chador. In South Asia, it is known as a burqa.
United Kingdom[link]
Abayas are not restricted to the East. In cities with strong Islamic communities such as London, Birmingham and Bradford, the abaya is worn by many Muslim women, increasingly commonly with the niqab (face veil). There are numerous shops and online stores selling abayas in the U.K.[citation needed]
Styles[link]
Abayat are known by various names but serve the same purpose, which is to cover. Contemporary models are usually caftans, cut from light, flowing fabrics like crepe, georgette, and chiffon. Styles differ from region to region: some abayat have embroidery on black fabric while others are brightly coloured and have different forms of artwork across them.
