Bilva tree.
The Bilva tree grows in almost all parts of India, irrespective of the nature of the soil, and is bitter, astringent and dry by nature. Tall and austere, with a stern aspect, gnarled trunk and sharp thorns, the Bilva is undoubtedly Lord Shiva's tree. Shiva is always worshipped with its leaves, and it is said that this tree is much loved by him. It is to be found in all Shiva temples throughout India. The Bilva is also found in Devi temples, where it is worshipped. At midnight, on the evening before Durga and Kali pooja (worship), a tantric ritual called Bel Varan is performed with the appropriate mantras. A particular energy is taken from the tree and placed in a kalash (pot). This energy is then transferred to the statue of Durga or Kali to charge or empower it for the coming pooja. The process is called prana pratishtha, the establishing of the life force in the statue. When the pooja is over, the energy is released, a process called visarjan.

Dilen Holi
Holi (referred to as Phagwa in Bhojpuri), also called the Festival of Colours, is a popular Hindu spring festival observed in India, Guyana, Trinidad, and Nepal. In West Bengal, it is known as Dolyatra (Doljatra) or Boshonto Utsav ("spring festival").
On the first day, burning of the demoness Holika, Hiranyakashipu's sister, in huge bonfires at night. It is called Kama dahanam in Andhra Pradesh.
On the second day, known as Dhulheti, people spend the day throwing coloured powder and water at each other. The spring season, during which the weather changes, is believed to cause viral fever and cold. Thus, the playful throwing of the coloured powders has a medicinal significance: the colours are traditionally made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva, and other medicinal herbs prescribed by Āyurvedic doctors. A special drink called thandai is prepared, sometimes containing bhang (Cannabis sativa).
Rangapanchami occurs a few days later on a Panchami (fifth day of the full moon), marking the end of festivities involving colours.
Holi takes place over two days in the later part of February or March. As per the Hindu calendar, it falls on the Phalgun Purnima (or Pooranmashi, Full Moon), which occurred on March 22 in 2008. (In 2007, Holi was celebrated on 3 March, the burning of Holika was on 4 March and the Dhuleti on 5 March.)

Maha Shiva Raatri 2010
Hello everybody !!!
Here are some glimpses of the Maha Shiva Raatri celebrations of 2010 at Sri Kambliswami Madam, in Pondicherry.
Maha Shiva Raatri is the most important festival for Lord Shiva, one of the three major Gods of the Hindus with Brahma and Vishnu. He is also the Supreme Lord and Teacher of all the Yogis.
Maha Shiva Raatri is considered a very auspicious and powerful day for spiritual practice. Many stories are told to illustrate the specialness of this day.
One of them tells of a hunter hunting in the jungle without success. At nightfall, a tiger started chasing him. So he started running for his life and eventually climbed a Bilva tree to be safe. The tiger - a very patient tiger - settled under the tree and waited for the hunter to come down from the tree again. The hunter, sitting on a branch of the tree with the tiger below, was quite tense and couldn't sleep. So he started plucking leaves of the tree and let them fall on the earth. It so happened, that below the tree there was a Shiva Lingam, a representation of Shiva. The whole night went on like this. Shiva was very pleased by the fasting and the offering thus made to him by the tiger and by the hunter - even though unconsciously ... So he granted them Moksha, deliverance on the spot.
Plenty of good inspirations and of good and auspicious energies to all of you !!!
