A Member of the Legislative Assembly (abbreviated MLA) or a Member of the Legislature (abbreviated ML), is a representative elected by the voters of a constituency to the legislature or legislative assembly of a sub-national jurisdiction.

Australia[link]

Members of the Legislative Assembly use the suffix MP in New South Wales^[1] and Queensland.^[2]

In Western Australia, Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, members are known as MLAs. However the suffix MP is also commonly used. South Australia and Tasmania have a House of Assembly and denote its members MHA.

In Victoria members can use either MP or MLA.^[3]

In federal parliament, members of the House of Representatives are designated MP and not MHR.^[4]

Brazil[link]

In Brazil, Members of all 26 Legislative Assemblies (Portuguese: Assembléias Legislativas) are called deputados estaduais (English: statewide deputies). The Federal District Legislative Assembly is actually called Legislative Chamber (Portuguese: Câmara Legislativa), and is composed by deputados distritais (English: district deputies). Unlike the federal legislative body, which is bicameral, Brazilian states legislatures are unicameral. Members of the Lower House are also called deputies, but they are deputados federais (English: federal deputies).

Canada[link]

In Canada, members of legislative assemblies are called MLAs in all provinces and territories except:

• Ontario, where they have been called Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) since 1938 and before 1938 used both MPP and MLA,
• Quebec, where they are called Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) since 1968, and
• Newfoundland and Labrador, where they are called Members of the House of Assembly (MHAs).

Members of the Legislative Assembly in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia (despite being a House of Assembly), Prince Edward Island and in the three territories (Yukon, NWT and Nunavut) are known as MLAs.

Falkland Islands[link]

Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands use the suffix MLA. In 2009 the Legislative Council of the Falkland Islands (which had existed since the 1840s) was replaced with the new Legislative Assembly. As a result, Members of the Legislative Assembly are often still referred to as Councillors.

Hong Kong[link]

Members of Hong Kong Legislative Council are referred to as Legco Councillors.

Northern Ireland[link]

Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly, the devolved legislature of Northern Ireland are known as MLAs (Members of the Legislative Assembly).

The Assembly was suspended on October 14, 2002 but the persons elected to it at the 2003 Assembly Election were called together on 15 May 2006 under the Northern Ireland Act 2006 ^[5] for the purpose of electing a First Minister and Deputy First Minister and choosing the members of an Executive (before 25 November 2006) as a preliminary to the restoration of devolved government in Northern Ireland. Another election was held on 7 March 2007 and powers were restored to the Assembly in May 2007.

In the United States of America, legislator is the generic term referring to a member of the legislative body of any of the country's 50 states.

The formal name varies from state to state. In 24 states, the legislature is simply called the Legislature, or the State Legislature, while in 19 states, the legislature is called the General Assembly. In Massachusetts and New Hampshire, the legislature is called the General Court, while North Dakota and Oregon designate the legislature as the Legislative Assembly.

Just as a member of the United States House of Representatives is officially a member of Congress (abbreviated MC) despite being referred as a congressmen or representatives, a legislator in the lower chamber of state legislatures would be a member of the Legislature (abbreviated ML), member of the State Legislature (abbreviated MSL), member of the General Assembly (abbreviated MGA), member of the General Court (abbreviated MGC) or member of the Legislative Assembly (abbreviated MLA) even though they are commonly referred to as representatives or assemblymen.

Further confusion over the proper title of legislators comes when newspapers, using the Associated Press guidelines for journalists, refer to legislators as state representatives or state senators to avoid confusion with federal counterparts.

Legislative Assembly is the name given in some countries to either a legislature, or to one of its branch. The name is used by a number of member-states of the Commonwealth of Nations, as well as a number of Latin American countries.

Legislative Assemblies in the Commonwealth[link]

A number of colonies in the British Empire were given a degree of involvement in running their own affairs by the creation of a representative body, often named the Legislative Assembly. Typically the Legislative Assembly was partially or wholly elected by popular vote; this was usually in contrast with the other chamber of the legislature, called the Legislative Council, whose membership was generally either nominated by the Governor, or indirectly elected. Conflict between the two chambers frequently led to the Legislative Council being reformed, or even abolished outright, thus leaving the Legislative Assembly as either the more powerful chamber in the parliament, or the only one.

The modern-day Legislative Assembly in a Commonwealth country, either as a national or sub-national parliament, is in most cases an evolution of one of these colonial legislative chambers.

In a number of territories, the name House of Assembly is used instead.

Members of Commonwealth Legislative Assemblies[link]

Members of a Legislative Assembly in a Commonwealth country are usually referred to as a "Member of the Legislative Assembly", commonly abbreviated as MLA; however, in Canada, members of the province of Ontario's Legislative Assembly are known as a "Member of the Provincial Parliament" (MPP, Ontario).

Although Northern Ireland's legislature is called the Northern Ireland Assembly, its members are also known as MLA's.

In India, the lower or sole house of each constituent state's parliament is called the Legislative Assembly, or Vidhan Sabha. The same name is also used for the lower house of the legislatures for two of the union territories, Delhi and Pondicherry. The upper house in the seven states with a bicameral legislature is called the Legislative Council, or Vidhan Parishad. Members of the former are called MLAs, and those of the latter MLCs.

The lower houses of the parliaments of the Australian states of New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia are called the Legislative Assembly. In contrast, the state of Queensland has abolished the former upper house of its parliament, leaving the Legislative Assembly as the sole chamber. The sole house of parliament in the Australian Capital Territory is the Legislative Assembly.

In Malaysia, the State Legislative Assemblies of each individual states are known as Dewan Undangan Negeri. There are thirteen State Legislative Assemblies in Malaysia and it is a unicameral legislature.

In Quebec, the Legislative Assembly was renamed the National Assembly, as part of the abolition of the Legislative Council on December 31, 1968.

In Mauritius, the unicameral Parliament was known as the Legislative Assembly until 1992, when, following the establishment of a republic, it was renamed the National Assembly.

Satpal Singh (born 1955) is a wrestling coach and former wrestler of India. He was a Gold Medalist in 1982 Asian Games and a Bronze medalist in 1974 Asian Games.Today he is better known as the coach of Olympic Bronze medal winner Sushil Kumar.^[2]

Biography[link]

Satpal born on 1 February 1955 in Bawana village in Delhi. He was coached by the famous wrestling coach Guru Hanuman.

"Mahabali" Satpal now works as Deputy Director of Education, Delhi. He is also the President of School Games Federation of India. He runs an Akhada for coaching of wrestling with fellow coach Virender Singh from 1988 in Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. He trained Olympic bronze medallist, Sushil Kumar for the Beijing Olympics 2008.

He was awarded Dronacharya Award in 2009 by the Indian Government. Earlier in 1983 he has been awarded by the Padma Shri award. ^[3]

Charanjit Singh Atwal (born 15 March 1937) was deputy speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Phillaur constituency of Punjab in 14th Lok Sabha and is a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) political party.

He is a former Speaker of the Punjab Assembly.He was born in Montgomery in Pakistan and graduated from GGN Khalsa College, Ludhiana. He obtained the LLB degree from Punjab University, Chandigarh and was Speaker of the Punjab Assembly from 1997-2002. Earlier he was a member of the Lok Sabha from 1985-1989.

from 1997 to 2000 he was Chairman of the Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes. He was jailed during 1975-77 emergency.

Charanjit Singh (born 3 February 1931 in Nehari, Punjab ( Now in Himachal Pradesh) ) is a former field hockey player from India. He captained the Indian hockey team that won the gold medal in the 1964 Summer Olympics at Tokyo, Japan.^[1][2]

He retired as Director Department of Physical Education in Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He currently stays in Una. , Himachal Pradesh. He is having two sons and a daughter Kiran.
