Chapter 13 of the First Epistle to the Corinthians, written by Paul the apostle covers the subject of love, principally the love that Christians should have for everyone. In the original Greek, the word αγαπη agape is used throughout. This is translated into English as charity in the King James version; but the word love is preferred by most other translations, both earlier and more recent.

1 Corinthians illuminates the early church's efforts to define itself, not only in terms of doctrine, but also allegiance to spiritual leaders such as Peter, Paul, Apollos and Jesus. A significant portion of the preceding chapter (1 Corinthians 12:1-10) focuses on the issue of spiritual gifts, and there appear to have been interpersonal conflicts based upon the possession of such gifts, including speaking in tongues or prophecy. Paul tells his audience that they may have all the gifts of the Holy Spirit, but unless they first have Christian love, called charity, these gifts mean nothing:

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. (King James Version)

The first epistle of Paul the apostle to the Corinthians, often referred to as First Corinthians (and written as 1 Corinthians), is the seventh book of the New Testament of the Bible. Paul and "Sosthenes our brother" wrote this epistle to "the church of God which is at Corinth", in Greece.^[1Cor.1:1-2]

This epistle contains some of the best-known phrases in the New Testament, including (depending on the translation) "all things to all men" (9:22), "without love, I am nothing" (13:2), "through a glass, darkly" (13:12), and "when I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child" (13:11).

There is near consensus among historians and Christian theologians that Paul is the author of the First Epistle to the Corinthians, typically classifying its authorship as "undisputed" (see Authorship of the Pauline Epistles). The letter is quoted or mentioned by the earliest of sources, and is included in every ancient canon, including that of Marcion. However, two passages may have been inserted at a later stage. The first passage is 1 Cor 11:2-16 dealing with praying and prophesying with head covering. The second passage is 1 Cor 14:34-35 which has been hotly debated. Part of the reason for doubt is that in some manuscripts, the verses come at the end of the chapter instead of at its present location. Furthermore, Paul is here appealing to the law which is uncharacteristic of him. Lastly, the verses come into conflict with 11:5 where women are described as praying and prophesying.

Before joining Apple, she was a physicist and archaeologist. She married another Macintosh team member, Alain Rossmann, and is the mother of two children.

Bob Utley is a contemporary Bible teacher who is best known for his commentary series that covers the Old and New Testaments.

Utley was born in Houston, Texas in 1947.

Utley attended East Texas Baptist University from 1969–1972 and graduated with a Bachelors in Religion. He then pursued a Masters in Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary between 1972 - 1975. In 1976 he continued post-graduate studies at Baylor University. His academic studies then went on hiatus until 1987 when he began a Doctorate in Ministry with Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois - which he completed in 1988. In 1991 he once again performed post-graduate studies, this time in Koine Greek and Hermeneutics at Wycliffe Bible Translators Summer Institute of Linguistics. In 1994 he returned to Trinity Evangelical Divinity School for further post-graduate studies which he completed in 1997.
