Dennis Amiss

Dennis Leslie Amiss (born 7 April 1943 in Harborne, Birmingham, Warwickshire) was an English cricketer and cricket administrator.

He played cricket for both Warwickshire County Cricket Club and England. A right-handed batsman, Amiss was a brilliant stroke maker particularly through extra cover and midwicket - his two favourite areas to score runs. He was an accomplished batsman in all forms of the game. He averaged 42.86 in first-class, 35.06 in List-A, 46.30 in Tests and 47.72 in One Day Internationals. In first-class cricket he scored 103 centuries.

After retiring as a player in 1987, he served Warwickshire as Chairman of the Cricket Committee, and he followed David Heath as Chief Executive from 1994 until 2005. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Birmingham in the summer of 2007.

England career

Amiss made his Test debut for England in the fifth Test of the 1966 series with West Indies, and he proved an accomplished Test match batsman. He was one of the first batsman to use a protective helmet. In scoring 3,612 Test runs, Amiss made eleven half-centuries and eleven centuries, including two double centuries against the West Indies. His highest Test match score, also his highest first-class score, was 262 not out against the West Indies in the 1973-74 Kingston Test, an innings that saved the Test match for England after they conceded a first innings lead of 230. The next highest score in England's innings was 38. After being dropped by England in 1975, he made a successful return against the West Indies at The Oval in the final Test of 1976, although his 203 in the first innings did not prevent England losing the match. Amiss's last Test came in 1977 when he was left out to make way for Geoff Boycott's return from self imposed exile.

Amiss was also a handy One Day International batsman scoring 859 runs, including four centuries and one half-century, with a top score of 137 against India which is still England's highest individual score in the cricket World Cup. He has the distinction of scoring the first ever One Day International century (103 in the second ever One Day International in 1972). He ended with an ODI batting average of 47.72, which excepting those players to have played fewer than five times remains the highest of any England batsman who has completed his career, although the still-active Kevin Pietersen averaged over 50 throughout the first 60 matches of his ODI career up until September 2007.

He was selected as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1975.

Around 20000 people watched the opening match of the 1975 World Cup between England and India at Lord's. India went into the match with only one specialist spinner, leaving out Bedi in what proved a controversial decision. England won the toss, batted and dominated against India's steady but unthreatening medium-pace seam attack. Amiss plundered 137 from 147 balls, hitting 18 fours, mainly crisp off-side drives and cuts. Keith Fletcher offered support with 68, while captain Mike Denness (37 from 31) and Chris Old (51 from 30) provided some big hitting at the death. The lone spinner, Venkataraghavan, was by far India's most economical bowler. In response, India decided not to chase the target and instead engaged in what was assumed to be "batting practice". Sunil Gavaskar scored just 36 not out from 174 balls, and was later heavily criticised both in the press and by Indian team management. This movie got mixes reviews at its screen release, but I've always thought... This movie not only tells the story of the accidental connection of two people, one black and one white, who would probably have never met in their normal lives, it also presents a vivid portrait of the time in which they lived. Set against the background of the JFK assassination and the aftermath, the protagonists meet and help each other through turning points in their lives. At first wary of each other, they come to understand the forces which have shaped each other's personalities and then come to appreciate the humanity and longing they have in common. Segregation and prejudice on both sides are explored without preaching. Finally it ends if not happily at least on a note of hope. This is the best performance I've ever seen by Pfeiffer. She is practically unrecognizable--her southern accent is perfect and her Jackie O-inspired <b>...</b>

With England still 258 runs behind, Ian Chappell had no hesitation in enforcing the follow-on. They faced Lillee, Walker and a rejuvanated Jeff Thomson, who had been hampered by a shoulder injury in the first innings. Edrich fell cheaply, Amiss was felled and retired hurt, then skipper Denness was bowled by a smart off-cutter. Graham Gooch was again caught behind without scoring, a disappointing pair in his first Test match. At 5/90 things were again looking grim, and only fighting innings from Keith Fletcher (51) Alan Knott (38) and a slogging John Snow (34) lent the scoreboard any respectability. In the wake of the comprehensive defeat at Edgbaston, Mike Denness resigned as skipper and the ECB opted for South African-born Tony Greig as his replacement. Greig won the toss and batted on a flat Lord's deck, only to watch Wood, Edrich and Amiss all capitulate to Lillee. David Steele, a grey-haired 33-year-old plucked from county ranks at Greig's insistence, strode to the crease belatedly after the fall of Wood (Steele had taken a wrong turn in the Lord's pavilion and ended up in a bathroom instead of on the ground). Steele proceeded to do what few England batsman had done in the previous year - to hook and cut Lillee and Thomson's shorter deliveries but otherwise playing forward. He scored 50 (103 balls) in a remarkable debut. Greig drew determination from Steele's resolve and smashed 96 (129) while Knott (69) and Woolmer (33) also did their part.
