Qurbān (Arabic: قربان‎) is the sacrifice of a livestock animal during Eid-ul-Adha. The word is related to the Hebrew qorbān "offering" and Syriac qurbānā "sacrifice", etymologised through the cognate Arabic triliteral as "a way or means of approaching someone".^[1]

The sacrifice of Abraham[link]

In isllam, the sacrifice of an animal is legal from the morning of the 10th to sunset of the 12th Dhu l-Hijjah, the 12th lunar month of the Islamic calendar. It is understood as a symbolic repetition of Abraham's sacrifice of a ram in place of his son, a crucial notion in Judaism, Christianity and Islam alike.

Most schools of fiqh accept that the animal must be killed according to the prohibitions of halal sacrifice and that the animal in question must be a goat, sheep, cow or camel.

On whom is sacrifice compulsory[link]

• Every sane adult Muslim male and female
• A person owns 613.35g silver (19.71 troy ounces silver) and/ or 87.48g of gold or its value in cash or kind
• Is resident in his home town and not on journey

On whom is sacrifice not compulsory[link]

• Children
• The very poor
• The traveller

The animals of sacrifice[link]

• Domesticated goat, either male or female, of at least one year of age
• Domesticated sheep, either male or female, if six months old and over, the animal must look like one year old. Sheep that are one year old and over are preferred for sacrifice
• Domesticated cow, ox or buffalo, of at least two years old
• Domesticated camel, male or female, of at least five years of age

Animals not allowed for sacrifice[link]

• Sheep aged six months to a year, but do not resemble a year old sheep
• Undomesticated, wild animals
• Animals of sacrifice are domesticated goat, sheep, cattle and camel, male or female. No other type of animal is allowed for sacrifice
• A blind animal
• A frail weak animal
• An animal born without ears
• An animal with more than one-third of its ear cut off
• An animal that does not have any teeth and is unable to graze. However if it is able to graze it will suffice for sacrifice.
• An animal with the horns broken at the root and the brain is visible
• An animal that walks on three legs and does not take support from the lame leg. However if it takes support from the lame leg, it will suffice for sacrifice
• More than one-third of the tail is cut off
• An animal with skin disease such as scabies or mange

Animals acceptable for sacrifice[link]

• An animal which has two-third vision
• An animal that has no horns, or its horns are broken
• An animals that gets injured during the actual slaughter process is acceptable for sacrifice

Animals preferred for sacrifice[link]

• Castrated animals

Time of sacrifice[link]

Sacrifice commences aftr the prayer of Eid-ul-Adha. In rural areas where no Eid prayer is held, sacrifice commences at the break of dawn (Fajr)

Duration of sacrifice[link]

Sacrifice commences from the morning of the 10th Zul Hijja to sunset of the 12th Zul Hijja. The duration of sacrifice is three days (10th, 11th and 12th) and two nights (11th and 12th). Sacrifice at night is permitted if carried out in a place which is well lit and there is no fear of error.

Important considerations before sacrifice[link]

• The hair and milk of a living sacrificial animal may not be used before sacrifice
• The animal be treated humanly
• A spacious enclosure be provided for the animal
• The animal must be given adequate feed
• All animals must be kept out of view of the slaughtering area
• Dragging the animal is not allowed
• The knife for sacrifice has to be sharpened to the optimum, and the slaughter should be carried out quickly and effectively to minimise the suffering sustained by the animal. Sharpening is not allowed in front of the sacrificial animal

The actual sacrifice[link]

• The animal has to be placed down very gently on its left side
• It is essential to recite: Bismillah, Allahu Akbar (In the name of Allah, Allah is the greatest)
• The throat of the animal should be cut in a manner to ensure that the gullet, the wind pipe and the two external jugular/ arterial veins are severed

Considerations after sacrifice[link]

• Skinning of the animal is only permitted once the animals calms down and the animal has stopped kicking

Distribution of the meat and skin of the animal[link]

Muslims may consume the meat and utilize the skin of their sacrificial animals and/ or give it away as charity. Consumption of this meat is considered a great favour of Allah as previous nations of the past were not able to consume their sacrificial animals. The meat and skin may not be used be used for economic activity such as for re-sale or the payment of wages

Rtn. Ghulam Mustafa PHF MD (Bengali: গুলাম মুস্তাফা) (born 31 December 1953) is a notable Bangladeshi person. He is widely recognized for his pragmatic and progressive views on migration and is currently the renowned individual to query on the multi-billion dollar industry of Manpower Export from Bangladesh.^[1] He served as the most dynamic President of BAIRA from 2008-10.^[2]

Early life[link]

Mustafa or popular known locally as 'Shada chul Mustafa' (White haired Mustafa) was born in Munshirhat, District of Feni to Abdul Wadud; who was the Principal of a Primary School. Hailing from a highly educated family, he lost his father at the age of 5 and was brought up by his mother. Severe struggles lead to him successfully graduating with a Masters in Economics from Chittagong University in 1976.

Liberation War[link]

Mustafa was a Freedom Fighter during the Bangladesh Liberation War of '71. He served as a Staff Officer to the CO in the 10th East Bengal Regiment, Sector-2 under Col. Zafar Imam and fought in the Battle of Belonia Bulge.^[3]

Career[link]

Since the early 1980 he retired from the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industry Corporation and established his very fist enterprise with the concept of 'Export or Perish'. Till today Mustafa had diversified and engaged in several sectors consisting: Manpower Export, Travel and Tourism, Global Logistics, Seafood Export, Education Institute, Development of Skilled Workforce, Insurance and Real Estate. He's currently the CEO and Managing Director of Prantik Group.

Bagging 3 decades of experience, Mustafa is noted as a bank for Migration knowledge and views regarding its future. He has invited to provide lecture on Migration by ILO,^[4] IOM,^[5][6] National Defence College of Bangladesh and many other local and international organization.^[7] He was the only BAIRA leader interviewed by international medias such as BBC, Al Jazeera, NHK Japan and so on. He served as Chairman, HRD & Migration Management to FBCCI and EC Member of Bangladesh Better Business forum, under the committee of Skill Development Working Group.

Grameen[link]

He was the student of Nobel Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus in Chittagong University and has been nominated and currently serving in the Board of Directors for Grameen Fund and Grameen Knitwear.

Recognition[link]

G. Mustafa is a Fellow of the EDI of the World Bank. Mustafa was awarded with hundreds of recognition and mentionable are the gold medals by the Journalist Forum and BAIRA members for his ethical and progressive contribution to the sector. He was also honored by the then Mayor of Manila with the City's gold key. He was also honoured as Commercially Important Person (CIP) of Bangladesh consecutively for 5 years.

Publications[link]

Mustafa is a Rotarian and has written the only book regarding Rotary Experience in Bangladesh, 'I am eager to say all about Rotary' was published on 25 May 2000. He also brought out the only life experience and scenario witnessing of Feni-Belonia War (Battle of the Belonia bulge), 'Feni-Belonia: A heated war field.'^[8]

Zulfiqar Ali (born 1947, Mombasa, Kenya) was a right-handed cricket bowler who played three ODIs for East Africa. In his third match, against England, he took three wickets for 63 runs, the best figures by any East African bowler.

Shabbir Ahmed (born April 21, 1976 in Khanewal) is a Pakistani cricketer. He is a line-and-length pace bowler who took eight wickets for 109 runs on his Test debut against Bangladesh in the first of their 2003-04 three-Test series, including five wickets in the second innings.^[1] He also had an impressive start to his One-Day International career after picking up three wickets (all three bowled out) with two wickets in his very first over, in his debut against the West Indies at Toronto.^[2][3]

Style[link]

Shabbir Ahmed is a tall (6'5"), Pakistani fast bowler. He extracts a great deal of bounce, even on lifeless wickets, and bowling from close to the stumps - much like Glenn McGrath - allows him to stick to a tight wicket-to-wicket line. He seams and cuts more than he swings, often sharply and both ways and is a sound exponent of reverse swing.^[4]

One year ban[link]

Until then he had taken 51 wickets in just 10 Tests, but in 2005 after playing the first Test against England he was reported to the ICC for an illegal bowling action. Following an investigation into his action, Ahmed was banned from cricket for one year in December 2005.,,.^[5][6][7]

Return to cricket[link]

As of 21 December 2006, having completed his one year term, Shabbir is once again eligible to play International Cricket. However if Shabbir is reported again, he will be suspended from bowling at international level until his action is reassessed.^[8][9] Currently Shabbir is playing in the Pakistani domestic competition.
