The Karakoram Highway - 52min. documentary
See full film here: vod.journeyman.tv August 2003 The remote Pakistani valley of Bagrot developed in splendid isolation. Cut off from the rest of the world by the mountains, it was self-sufficient and had its own distinctive character. However, the construction of a major new highway changed everything. Suddenly, it become a cog in the global market. Once calm streets were flooded with tourists; children discovered the internet and a whole new world opened up to villagers. But the road has also irrevocably altered the nature of village communities and left them at the whim of market forces. This beautifully filmed documentary provides a snapshot of a society in transience .

The Karakoram Highway - from China to Pakistan
Thanks for watching everyone! I have recently uploaded another travel video: www.youtube.com This video is about Shanghai, and it's something completely different, but I hope you like it! *** The Karakoram Highway (KKH) runs from Kashgar in Western China to Islamabad in Pakistan, and isn't so much a highway as a 'high road'. It took a stunning 20 years to finish the road, and even today it continues to suffer from extreme weather and environmental disasters. The KKH runs through the highest concentration of soaring mountain peaks and raging rivers in the world, and is generally considered to be among the most spectacular areas on our planet. Traveling here isn't for the faint hearted, although transportation has improved significantly in the past decades. In October 2010 I had the chance to travel the Karakoram Highway. Although Pakistan had suffered its worst floods in recent history the same year, most parts of the road were still intact. Nevertheless, traveling the road proved a massive challenge and also a great adventure. As these events had scared off many tourists and travelers, I found myself among locals for nearly all of the time. (Other than royalty free audio, I also used a short part of the following song: Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyara Hai - by Penn Penn Masala)

Karakoram
The composition Karakoram was my submission to Vanderbilt's Commons Reading Competition for artistic works inspired by the book Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. It was chosen as one of twenty winning entries. For those who have not read Three Cups of Tea, this is a programmatic composition that follows the overall story of that book. The piece is monothematic, with the contrasting sections all being derived from the music stated at the beginning (during the first image). Its form is generally free, relying on thematic unity and a recapitulation of sorts at the end for coherence. Although the work can be best understood with knowledge of the book's plot, such knowledge is not essential. Sean Calhoun

Documentary about Karakoram Highway (KKH) to China
The Karakoram Highway is one of those legendary roads to travel in Asia. The name implies it's a big 2 or 4 way street. In fact, it's not even close to a "highway" but it is a road. This road is the road that connects Pakistan to China, for many years. It's a magnificent road! KKH as it is known starts actually in Abbottabad. Up to this town the road is 4 way street and pretty busy. The legend of the KKH is long and spectacular. Everybody has heard of the legendary Silk Road. As the legend goes, it was the road where silk was transported from China to Europe. The truth of the Silk Road is slightly different. In the old days there were no merchants traveling the whole route. In fact, silk and other goods from China were transported via different roads, which includes the legendary road Marco Polo traveled. However, goods were usually traded in cities on the roads going west and south (looking from Chinese perspective. Therefore we can't say there was one Silk Road. In fact, there were many. The Karakoram Highway as we know the road nowadays was one of those Silk Roads. From Kashgar (or Kashi as it is known in China) goods were transported over the Khunjarab Pass to the lower lands of the western Indian subcontinent. It was a hard and dangerous road. And even today, it's still a hard road. The Karakoram highway ends in Kashgar, the great trade city in the far west of China. Marco Polo writes about Kashgar. Walking on the legendary market, and reading Marco Polo's diary, one ...

High Road to Hunza -Documentary on Karakoram Highway (KKH) - FacesOfPakistan
flixya.com The 1300 kilometres (800 miles) long KKH, or the N-5, originates from Hassan Abdal, a place some 45 kilometres from Islamabad on the Islamabad - Peshawar Highway, goes through Abbotabad, Manshera, crosses the River Indus at Thakot, on to Gilgit (through Besham, Pattan and Sazin) and then to Chilas, Hunza and Sost before crossing the Khunjerab Pass at the height of some 4800 metres (15750ft) - the Zero Point between Pakistan and China. It then enters the high Central Asian plateau before winding down through the Pamirs to Kashgar, at the western edge of the Taklamakan Desert. It is a marvel of human endurance, ingenuity and determination. Both Pakistani and Chinese workers and engineers worked day and night over some of the most formidable and inaccessible mountain ranges of the world, with deep gorges and torrential Indus running along the track with its full might. The Indus River flows northwest, dividing the Himalaya from the Karakoram. The KKH runs along the Indus for 310 kilometres of its climb north, winding around the foot of Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain in the world. Not far north of Jaglot the Gilgit river joins the Indus from the west. The highway then leaves the Indus for Gilgit, Hunza and Khunjrab rivers to take on the Karakoram Range - where 12 of the 30 highest mountains in the world overlook the KKH. At Khunjrab Pass, the KKH proudly stands as the highest metalled border crossing in the world. En route to Khunjrab, before Gilgit ...
