Dr Danna Messer: Joan, Lady of Wales: A Model of Welsh Queenship or an Exception to the Norm?
The Mortimer History Society: ‘Cherchez la femme’: Queenship, Law and Marriage in medieval Wales and its March.

Joan of England, The Plague Princess
Joan of England was one of the first and most prominent English victims of the plague, relatively new to England at the time. If only she'd listened to the mayor of Bordeaux, who'd warned her of this new disease, then she might have had a long and happy life as Queen of Castile.

The Mortimer History Society: ‘Cherchez la femme’: Queenship, Law and Marriage in medieval Wales and its March.
If the concept of kingship in Wales before the end of the thirteenth century was unclear, what can be said about queenship and the women who found themselves as the wives of native Welsh rulers? Being the most well-documented of her predecessors, contemporaries and successors, the activities of Joan, Lady of Wales, in the early thirteenth century provide a much-needed platform to initiate such a discussion. Her circumstances and opportunities to intervene in the realm of Anglo-Welsh politics may have been unique to her to position as the daughter of the king of England and wife to Llywelyn ap Iorwerth of Gwynedd. Nevertheless, this notion is tempered by evidence from Welsh sources which suggest that Joan’s overall role also may have conformed to an established set of older native expectations related to her status as a ruler’s wife and, arguably, ‘queen’.
Dr Danna Messer is a medieval historian who specialises in the wives of native Welsh rulers in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, particularly Joan. She has published on various aspects of Welsh queenship, including her recent monograph Joan, Lady of Wales: Power and Politics of King John’s Daughter. She is acquisitions editor for Arc Humanities Press, the publishing arm of CARMEN, Worldwide Medieval Network, and executive editor of the Encyclopaedia of the Global Middle Ages, a partnership project between Arc and Bloomsbury Academic. Her current project is editing the volume ‘Norman to Early Plantagenets’ for English Consorts: Power, Influence, Dynasty, eds Aidan Norrie, Carolyn Harris, Joanna Laynesmith, Danna Messer, and Elena Woodacre, 4 vols (Palgrave, 2022).

CHILD BRIDE, BIGAMIST, KIDNAP VICTIM & PRINCESS. Joan of Kent was all four. She was also the daughter of a traitor, the wife of the Black Prince, the mother of Richard II, supposedly the inspiration for the Order of the Garter and a famed beauty, known as the fair maid of Kent. In today’s medieval English royal history documentary from History Calling, we’re going to look at the remarkable life of the first Princess of Wales; a woman who should have been Queen of England, if only her husband hadn’t died before his father. You’ll hear about her birth and upbringing, the execution of her father, Edmund of Woodstock, first Earl of Kent, her royal connections and her life at the court of her future parents-in-law, Edward III and Philippa of Hainault. We’ll also examine her absolutely scandalous first marriage to Sir Thomas Holland which was contracted in secret when Joan was just 12 years old and led to a fight between Thomas and Joan’s second husband, William Montagu, for who would get to be the spouse of this wealthy and beautiful aristocrat, who was the Countess of Kent in her own right after 1352. I’ll also look at the claims that Joan was kidnapped by Montagu and his family and held against her will. We’ll then look at her third marriage to the King’s eldest son, Edward of Woodstock, aka the Black Prince which was also unexpected and scandalous, but which was apparently a rare royal love match. You’ll hear too about Joan’s experiences of motherhood, her time as Princess of Wales and Princess of Aquitaine and how she acted as Regent for her young son, Richard II, after his father’s death in 1376 and his grandfather’s in 1377. She even had to navigate the Peasants’ Revolt in 1381 when the Tower of London was attacked but was so popular she came through this difficult situation unscathed. Finally, I’ll tell you about her final years and death in 1386.

BOOK DESCRIPTION
The history of women in medieval Wales before the English conquest of 1282 is one largely shrouded in mystery. This misfortune touches even the most well-known royal woman of the time, Joan of England (d. 1237), the wife of Llywelyn the Great of Gwynedd, illegitimate daughter of King John and half-sister to Henry III. With evidence of her hand in thwarting a full scale English invasion of Wales to a notorious scandal that ended with the public execution of her supposed lover by her husband and her own imprisonment, Joan's is a known, but little-told or understood story defined by family turmoil, divided loyalties and political intrigue. From the time her hand was promised in marriage as the result of the first Welsh-English alliance in 1201 to the end of her life, Joan's place in the political wranglings between England and the Welsh kingdom of Gwynedd was a fundamental one. This first-ever account of Siwan, as she was known to the Welsh, interweaves the details of her life and relationships with a gendered re-assessment of Anglo-Welsh politics by highlighting her involvement in affairs, discussing events in which she may well have been involved but have gone unrecorded and her overall deployment of royal female agency.

To find out exactly who Lady Dale Tryon was, watch this video, and let us know in the comments if you think she was unfairly abandoned by Charles.
