Benjamin Britten: The Turn of The Screw (part 1)
1982 Filmed version of this perhaps Britten's most popular opera after Peter Grimes after the Victorian-gothic story by Henry James and starring Heather Harper as Miss Jessel, Helen Donath as the Governess, Robert Tear as Peter Quint, Ava June as Mrs. Grose, Lilian Watson as Flora and Michael Ginn as Miles and played by the chamber orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Exellent camera work, locations, acting and direction. But most of all the interpretation by conductor Sir COLIN DAVIS is an absolute beaute. Whilst maintaining an almost crystal clear sound bringing out in full the composer's magnificent orchestration, Davis manages to capture the melancholic and at times moving warmth of Britten's music as no other without falling into the trap of romantic overacting. Truly a musical experience of the highest level. Breathtaking. NB: Although the picture quality of this recording I made 20 years ago (with my Telefunken HiFi machine) is quite astonishing - even played at full screen the image stays good ! - the sound is slightly overmodulated, hopefully not too disturbing. Also: as the music is entirely continuous, cutting the clips is at times painstaking; yet I strive at keeping dramatic entities together as much as possible. Last: I hope you don't mind subtitles, as this was a broadcast by Dutch television...

Henry James Townsend -- Blind Girl Blues
Henry Townsend, the only blues artist to have recorded during every decade from the 1920s to the 2000s, was born in Shelby on October 27, 1909. A longtime resident of St. Louis, where he was hailed as a patriarch of the local blues scene, Townsend died on September 24, 2006. Other performers from the Shelby area have included singers Erma Franklin, Jo Jo Murray, the Kelly Brothers, and Hattie Littles, jazz legend Gerald Wilson, and bandleader Choker Campbell. Townsend, a master guitarist and pianist, played an integral role in the vital St. Louis blues scene of the 1920s, '30s, and '40s. His earliest years were spent in Shelby and then near Lula; the family was in Cairo, Illinois, when Townsend ran away from home and settled in St. Louis as a preteen. He made his recording debut in 1929, and during the 1930s he recorded in the company of leading blues artists including Roosevelt Sykes, John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, Robert Nighthawk, and Mississippi-born Big Joe Williams and Walter Davis. A prolific and spontaneous composer, Townsend claimed credit for writing the first version of the blues standard "Every Day I Have the Blues," recorded by Tupelo native Aaron "Pine Top" Sparks in 1935. Townsend continued to record with Davis after World War II but began working more outside of music as a hotel manager and debt collector. In 1961Townsend recorded his first album for folklorist Sam Charters, and over the next decades he toured, recorded several albums, and mentored ...

The Bridge
The Vision:
Back in October of 2009, I set out to make a film that would push my talents as both a storyteller and a filmmaker. I wanted to create a film that would challenge myself and my audience, meshing both classical and experimental storytelling techniques from music, books, & films that have inspired me in one way or another. I wanted to make a film that didn’t do any spoon-feeding, where my audience would leave with questions as well as answers. It was a long a difficult road to get to this point and there were days where I felt that I was in way over my head but eight months later, I can proudly say I’ve finally completed my film “The Bridge” and it was an experience I would never forget.
The Inspiration:
The story of The Bridge was a story a cousin had told me when I was eight years old. It was a ghost story about two siblings on a bridge. I remember it haunting me for weeks and causing many sleepless nights under my sheets. Obviously, it had a lasting influence in my life. It had always been one of those stories that I wanted to adapt into a short film so when the opportunity finally came one day, I decided to pull to trigger.
When I was in film school, I would constantly fantasize about making some sort of epic period piece, especially one that took place during WW2. So when I decided I was going to make The Bridge, I instantly followed it up with “hell, why not make it into a WW2 movie”? I could have easily made this film as a contemporary piece but where would the fun be in that? I never do things because it’s easy; I do it because it’s hard. I love a challenge. I figured I could keep the same characters, themes, motifs, style, and wrap it around a WW2 setting. So I did.
Pre-production:
So it began. After a quick outline, I started writing the screenplay and, being a one-man crew at the time, I also started doing work on costumes and props. I lived and breathed WW2 24/7. I watched every WW2 movie and documentary I could get my hands on. I even got my hands some real WW2 letters to get a grasp on the era’s language. I felt like a student again and I loved it. I scoured eBay for every WW2 field gear I could afford to buy and the stuff I couldn’t get, I had them custom made cheaply in China. I wanted it to be detailed and authentic as possible while keeping my almost non-existing budget down. I remember coming home one day and having almost a couple dozen eBay packages on front door. It looked like the front door of the post office.
Casting:
The casting of The Bridge was actually one of the smoothest aspects of the entire process. I first went to my good friend Amy and asked her if she would like to help me produce the film. Having worked with each other before, I didn’t really have to ask twice. She was happy to be my first recruit.
For the leading role, I asked my good friend Pablo Soriano to take the part. Having worked with him before, we have a good understanding of each other. He is just a naturally gifted actor and he makes my job as a director so much easier. Plus, his puppy dog eyes make him a perfect protagonist.
For the leading female role, I went looking for a girl who had beautiful, almost hypnotic eyes. That’s when I spotted Leah in one my good friend’s music video. I called up Carlos and basically told him, “I need to have that girl for movie”. A few days later, she was on board.
I owe the discovery of Mike, the character who plays James Connolly, to my producer Amy. She had read the script and recommended him. I remember her telling me “Mike IS James”. Words that any director would love to hear and as usual, Amy was right.
So a couple months later, the script was complete, the costumes and props were ready, and the cast was cast. We were ready to shoot!
Production:
With our extremely limited budget, I knew right from day one that we were going to shoot “The Bridge” on DSLRs, specifically the Canon 7D and 5D Mark II. With this in mind, I knew (as also the DP of the film), I was going to push these cameras to its limits. I wasn’t going to let my equipment limit my vision of the film. I knew at the very beginning that I may or may not have a crappy movie in the end but hell, it’s gonna look damn good! We all know about the camera’s limitations but I wasn’t going to bitch and moan about it, I was going to work around it. I took it as a personal challenge to make these cameras work and I did.
About 75% of the film was shot with the 7D and the rest with the 5DM2. The main reason I shot with the 7D more was the 24p firmware update wasn’t available for the 5DM2 during the bulk of the shooting. I prefer the 5DM2’s full frame sensor the 7D cropped sensor.
Production, like any other shoot, had its ups and downs. Ours was mainly San Francisco’s unpredictable weather. You can blink and the bay area can go from miserable foggy weather (which is what I wanted for the film) to perfect summer beach party weather.
Also, being

Nikon - HOW of WHY
Making of the Nikon D4 Release Video
I have often said, if I wasn't a filmmaker and photographer, I would be a teacher. There's great satisfaction in sharing knowledge & experience to help spark the creative fire in others.
When Nikon approached me to be a part of the D4 release project not only did they ask me to produce a video and stills, showing off the attributes of the new camera, they were also looking for a behind the scenes video spot detailing how "WHY" came together. This was an amazing opportunity, as it allowed me to simultaneously be both a filmmaker/photographer and a teacher. Though this meant everyone in the crew had to work twice as hard, especially Dane Henry. Capturing the action behind the scenes became just as important as the hero footage and stills. "HOW of WHY" is a great illustration of everyone's hard work and ability to multitask, plus proof that we all had a lot fun along the way!
In this spirit, now is a perfect opportunity to thank the key teachers that shared their knowledge with me. Thank you Bob Porter, George Egbert, James DuPratt, Jim McNay and Greg Lewis - I am forever grateful for the time you spent helping me to find my passion for adventure and storytelling.
For more detailed information on the production of "WHY" & "HOW of WHY" and the Nikon D4, check out our blog and the Nikon Professional Services Global site.

hair-whip heartbreak
Naomi is 16, and works with us at photography factory when she is off school pretty much as an equal member. Lets be honest age is irrelevant in a great picture, plus she has a sense of the social media space to rival the best new media agency analysts. All the newest trends are always playing out as only she predicts. Her detailed clear and analysis of youth culture on the internet is worth a million dollars to us and she is a key member of our team. More importantly her simple black and white photographic portraits are utterly brilliant, an evocation of sub suburban teenage life as seen though the eyes of a 15 (now 16) year old girl. But on the day of this slow motion test Naomi was not her normal beautiful smiling dry sarcastic self (think Juno with a camera). Recently she had a relationship with a Hollister lookalike boy end in an unfair way (what was ever fair about being 16?) and have to get it all dragged around the internet as the aftermath played out on FaceBook in a very modern and very public way. So in other words she was putting on a brave face. We all involved setting up the high speed camera and needed someone to stand in as a lighting dummy, When shooter one had the idea to getting someone to shake their hair around... and see how it might look at 2000 fps. Naomi stepped up to the plate and quite shocked us by the force and passion she used to whip. The beguiling result is here... if you look at here closely you can see something else:
Something about that action and the air swishing though her hair just seemed to change her mood, as if she had just tossed away the weight of an the old nightmare, something thick and heavy that had been clinging to her, but suddenly it was gone. As she was hair whipping for the camera, shooter one quietly said to himself:
"Go girl, shake that boy right out of your hair..."
