i/ˈbÉ’zniÉ™ É™nd ËŒhɛərtsəɡoʊˈviË?nÉ™, -ËŒhÉœË?rt-, -É¡É™-/ or /ËŒhÉœË?rtsəˈɡɒváµ»nÉ™/;Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian Latin script: Bosna i Hercegovina, Bosnian and Serbian Cyrillic script: БоÑ?нa и Херцеговина; pronounced [bôsna i xÄ›rtÍ¡seÉ¡oÊ‹ina]), sometimes called Bosnia-Herzegovina or Bosnia & Herzegovina, abbreviated BiH or B&H, and in short often known informally as Bosnia, is a country in Southeastern Europe located on the Balkan Peninsula. Sarajevo is the capital and largest city. Bordered by Croatia to the north, west, and south; Serbia to the east; Montenegro to the southeast; and the Adriatic Sea to the south, with a coastline about 20 kilometres (12 miles) long surrounding the city of Neum. In the central and eastern interior of the country the geography is mountainous, in the northwest it is moderately hilly, and the northeast is predominantly flatland. The inland is a geographically larger region and has a moderate continental climate, bookended by hot summers and cold and snowy winters. The southern tip of the country has a Mediterranean climate and plain topography.

Austro-Hungarian rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina fell under Austro-Hungarian rule in 1878 when the Congress of Berlin approved the occupation of the Bosnia Vilayet, which officially remained part of the Ottoman Empire. Three decades later, in 1908, Austria-Hungary provoked the Bosnian crisis by formally annexing the occupied zone, establishing the Condominium of Bosnia and Herzegovina under the joint control of Austria and Hungary.
History
Occupation
Following the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, in June and July 1878 the Congress of Berlin was organized by the Great Powers. The resulting Treaty of Berlin caused Bosnia and Herzegovina to nominally remain under sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire, but was de facto ceded to Austria-Hungary, which also obtained the right to garrison the Sanjak of Novi Pazar. According to article 25:
The provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina shall be occupied and administered by Austria-Hungary. The government of Austria-Hungary, not desiring to undertake the administration of the Sanjak of Novi-Pazar, which extends between Serbia and Montenegro in a South-Easterly direction to the other side of Mitrovitza, the Ottoman administration will continue to exercise its functions there. Nevertheless, in order to assure the maintenance of the new political state of affairs, as well as freedom and security of communications, Austria-Hungary reserves the right of keeping garrisons and having military and commercial roads in the whole of this part of the ancient vilayet of Bosnia. To this end the governments of Austria-Hungary and Turkey reserve to themselves to come to an understanding on the details.

Herzegovina
Herzegovina (/ËŒhɛərtsᵻˈɡoÊŠváµ»nÉ™/ or /ËŒhÉœË?rtsəɡoʊˈviË?nÉ™/;Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian: Hercegovina, Херцеговина, [xɛ̌rtsɛɡovÌžina]) is the southern region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. While there is no official border distinguishing it from the Bosnian region, it is generally accepted that the borders of the region are Croatia to the southwest, Montenegro to the east, Mount Maglić to the northeast, and Mount Ivan to the north. Measurements of the area range from 11,419 km2 (4,409 sq mi), or around 22% of the total area of the present-day country, to 12,276 km2 (4,740 sq mi), around 24% of the country.
The name Herzegovina means "duke's land", referring to the medieval duchy of Stjepan VukÄ?ić KosaÄ?a who took title "Herzeg of Saint Sava". Herceg is derived from the German title Herzog.
Geography
The terrain of Herzegovina is mostly hilly karst with high mountains in the north such as ÄŒvrsnica and Prenj, except for the central valley of the river Neretva River. The largest city is Mostar, in the center of the region. Other larger towns include Trebinje, Stolac, Å iroki Brijeg, Konjic, and ÄŒapljina. Borders between Bosnia and Herzegovina are unclear and often disputed.

As a child, SAIS alumnus Jasmin Cesko was forced to flee his placid Eastern Bosnia hometown of Zepa after years-long wartime siege and an abrupt invasion, later determined by the Hague Tribunal as genocide. He found unlikely reconciliation at SAIS. Hear Jasmin tell his story along with his SAIS Professor, Edward P. Joseph, who coordinated the evacuation of Zepa as a UN official during the fateful days in July, 1995. Cesko and Joseph were stunned to be reunited in the SAIS classroom, reawakening searing memories from the war.

Amela is a Muslim. She went to school in Travnik and grew up with this ethnic segregation. Bosnia’s constitutional court declared the "two schools under one roof policy" unconstitutional in 2012. But this policy is still practiced in everyday life, even though nobody calls it that anymore. It’s not just in schools that the distance between the ethnic groups is visible. The parents also foster ethnic segregation from their neighbors. It’s always been this way - Amela will of course marry a Muslim.
The country is home to Bosnian Muslims, Bosnian Croats and Bosnian Serbs. They say they live together but on closer inspection they just live side by side. Very few would accept a spouse from a different ethnic group.

The war frontlines shifted throughout the conflict, but Bosnia and Herzegovina remained under Austro-Hungarian control for the entire duration of the war. The region did not experience extensive fighting as the main battle lines were further to the north and east. Austria-Hungary established a military administration in Bosnia and Herzegovina to maintain control over the region. The administration sought to suppress any opposition to Austro-Hungarian rule and imposed strict control over the local population. Despite the occupation, there were instances of resistance by local populations, particularly by Bosnian Serbs who aimed for the unification of Bosnia and Herzegovina with Serbia. These resistance efforts were met with harsh reprisals by the Austro-Hungarian authorities. The First World War ended in November 1918 with the defeat of the Central Powers, including Austria-Hungary. The collapse of the empire led to the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian administration in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following the end of the war, Bosnia and Herzegovina became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later renamed Yugoslavia) in 1918.

Ethnic divides still exist in some neighborhoods in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In a school in Travnik, a fence separates Muslim and Croat pupils.

Amela is a Muslim. She went to school in Travnik and grew up with this ethnic segregation. Bosnia’s constitutional court declared the "two schools under one roof policy" unconstitutional in 2012. But this policy is still practiced in everyday life, even though nobody calls it that anymore. It’s not just in schools that the distance between the ethnic groups is visible. The parents also foster ethnic segregation from their neighbors. It’s always been this way - Amela will of course marry a Muslim.
The country is home to Bosnian Muslims, Bosnian Croats and Bosnian Serbs. They say they live together but on closer inspection they just live side by side. Very few would accept a spouse from a different ethnic group.

More than three years of war in the 1990s devastated Bosnia after the fall of Yugoslavia. Tens of thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands were driven from their homes by ethnic cleansing.
The war ended in 1995 with a peace treaty that split the country into two parts: a Bosniak Muslim and Croat federation - and the other a Serb entity called Republika Srpska.
Now an ongoing political crisis and the resurgence of Serb nationalism under Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodic, is stirring up fears of renewed conflict.

Sarajevo is the capital and largest city. Bordered by Croatia to the north, west, and south; Serbia to the east; Montenegro to the southeast; and the Adriatic Sea to the south, with a coastline about 20 kilometres (12 miles) long surrounding the city of Neum. In the central and eastern interior of the country the geography is mountainous, in the northwest it is moderately hilly, and the northeast is predominantly flatland. The inland is a geographically larger region and has a moderate continental climate, bookended by hot summers and cold and snowy winters. The southern tip of the country has a Mediterranean climate and plain topography.

During the First World War, Bosnia and Herzegovina was under the occupation of Austria-Hungary. Prior to the war, Bosnia and Herzegovina had been under the control of Austria-Hungary since 1878 when it was taken by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This was met with resistance from Bosnian Serbs who desired unification with Serbia. In 1914, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, in Sarajevo (the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina) triggered the beginning of World War I. Austria-Hungary accused Serbia of supporting the assassins and used it as a pretext to declare war on Serbia. Following the declaration of war, the region became an important strategic base for Austria-Hungary as it provided a convenient route for launching military operations against Serbia. The war frontlines shifted throughout the conflict, but Bosnia and Herzegovina remained under Austro-Hungarian control for the entire duration of the war. The region did not experience extensive fighting as the main battle lines were further to the north and east. Austria-Hungary established a military administration in Bosnia and Herzegovina to maintain control over the region. The administration sought to suppress any opposition to Austro-Hungarian rule and imposed strict control over the local population. Despite the occupation, there were instances of resistance by local populations, particularly by Bosnian Serbs who aimed for the unification of Bosnia and Herzegovina with Serbia. These resistance efforts were met with harsh reprisals by the Austro-Hungarian authorities. The First World War ended in November 1918 with the defeat of the Central Powers, including Austria-Hungary. The collapse of the empire led to the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian administration in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following the end of the war, Bosnia and Herzegovina became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later renamed Yugoslavia) in 1918.
