ABC NewsRadio is an Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio service devoted to delivering live and 24-hour news updates and information. The service is available on a number of broadcasts right around Australia, including AM/FM radio, some pay-TV platforms and online via the Internet.
Originally called the Parliamentary and News Network (PNN), the AM/FM radio network is chartered to broadcast live the proceedings of parliament, either the House of Representatives or the Senate, as specified by the standing orders. Also broadcast, at the end of each day's sitting, is a recording of Question Time for the chamber that was not broadcast live that day. These restrictions do not apply to the other broadcasts of Newsradio (nor to newly commissioned rural and regional transmitters in 2006 (see below), although this is not exploited).
Parliamentary broadcasting was commenced by Ben Chifley's government on 10 July 1946, on ABC Radio. These broadcasts received their own frequencies in the 1980s as PNN. The PNN/ABC NewsRadio service was introduced in August 1994 to utilise the Parliamentary broadcasting frequencies which were not being used when Parliament was not in session.
Ruston & Hornsby, later known as Ruston, was an industrial equipment manufacturer in Lincoln, England, the company's history going back to 1840. The company is best known as a manufacturer of narrow and standard gauge diesel locomotives and also of steam shovels. Other products included cars, steam locomotives and a range of internal combustion engines, and later gas turbines. The company is now part of the Siemens group of Germany.
The original company was Proctor and Burton established in 1840, operating as millwrights and engineers. They became Ruston, Proctor and Company in 1857 when Joseph Ruston joined them, acquiring limited liability status in 1899. From 1866 they built a number of four and six-coupled tank locomotives, one of which was sent to the Paris Exhibition in 1867. In 1868 they built five 0-6-0 tank engines for the Great Eastern Railway to the design of Samuel W. Johnson. Three of these were converted to crane tanks, two of which lasted until 1952, aged eighty-four. Among the company's output were sixteen for Argentina and some for T. A. Walker, the contractor building the Manchester Ship Canal.
Here is my C. 1945 Ruston & Hornsby 6PB driving my 1937 Metropolitan Vickers dynamo. I have only once before driven the dynamo with this engine and that was before it was on a proper trolley and before I rebuilt the magneto. It seems to be fine now and a run on a good heavy load is allways good, this engine runs light load most of the time. The engine produces 1.5HP to 2HP at 700RPM to 1000RPM, has a bore and stroke of 3" by 3.5" giving a capacity of 404CC. This engine uses side valves which are under the piston and worked by push rods. The magneto is a Lucas SR1 and it uses a Champion D16 sparking plug. These engines run on unleaded petrol and are cooled by the water in the hopper. I restored this engine earlier in the year taking over 180 hours. The dynamo produces a rated 12V a...
Here is a video of my 6PB which has had a "cosmetic restoration" so basicaly a re paint and clean up allthough a small amound of internal work was done. It hasn't run for nearley four months now and so she was a little stuborn but one I cleaned the Lodge BBL sparking plug and applied some pencil graphite to the electrode, away she went! The engine is running much more evenly than before and I hope the starting will improve, if not I may have to advance the timing slighly. The fuel tank still needs to be painted, as does the exhaust and a trolley will be built soon. I am very pleased with the result and so far about 105 hours work has gone into it so far. The next video of this engine should see it on a trolley and fully completed.
On Saturday, with the help of a fellow enthusiast, I got the new flywheel key fitted. I had noticed the flywheel was able to rock very very slightly on the shaft after coming back from a rally. This was a bit worrying to say the least so a new key has been fitted and the problem eliminated. It seems very solid now and should be safe to rally. I also obtained a flat belt pulley, this just needed a good clean and is the finishing touch on the engine. This 6PB was built in the period 1942 -1947 and had obviously had a hard working life, the various bodges told that story! All of those were sorted out during a restoration earlier in the year by myself, this taking around 180 hours over 7 months. The magneto was also rebuilt making the engine very easy to start, even after having sat in t...
Ruston Hornsby 6PB B.HP 1 1/2 To 2 @ 700/1000 R.PM. Stationary Engine No. 162900 Owned by Stuart
Here is a video of my Ruston & Hornsby 6PB. This engine would have been built during the period 1942 to 1947 and was originally grey. It is seen here, ready to rally after 172 hours of work, the engine was restored and various "bodged" components fixed. It was given a lick of Ruston Bronze Green and mounted on a trolley which I built a couple of weeks ago. Ruston & Hornsby Ltd. built the PB range of engine from October 1930 until August 1953 so this one falls nicely in the middle! The range consisted of a 1 ½ to 2HP 6PB (as seen here), a 3HP 8PB, a 4 ½HP 9PB and a 6 ½HP 10PB. This engine produces 1 ½HP at 700RPM or 2HP at 1000RPM. It has a bore and stroke of 3" by 3 ½" and a capacity of 404CC. It utilises side valves and a very simple fixed jet carburettor. The engine runs on unl...

Tomorrow's coming 'round
A hair-pin curve in the road
She's got a run in her stocking
And she's missing the heel of her shoe
Got up this morning rolled out of bed
I spilled a diet coke
Called my mother said, "Hi"
What I meant to say was, "Why is your life a joke?"
Then, I went down to that ugly bar and
I clicked my heels three times just like you said
And I climbed that road to your empty house
The anticipation was a turn on
But you let me down
'Coz, I stood on that empty street alone
I said, "I'm ready for my close up now, Mr. Demille"
I waited for the light, but it never shone
Well I wonder what you do with that expensive piece of land
That overlooks a billion years of history
I have a sneaking suspicion, you will never understand
Hey maybe I'll see you down by the Rocky and Bullwinkle
And we can talk to that charlatan psychic
And she can paint a prettier picture of your future
'Coz that day in my life, that day in my life
I dreamt tomorrow, had a prettier face
I dreamt tomorrow, would have better things to say
Than, "You look like shit, what's your problem, bitch?
You're legs feel like sandpaper, you can't do anything right"
'Coz that day, never should have taken place
'Coz this day, in my life still cannot explain
Why I listened in the first place to you?
Oh yeah, something else
I hope one day you call up your father
And you have the guts to tell him, how he hurt you
And he made you hurt another
