Lehi's Family Sails to the Promised Land | 1 Nephi 18 | Book of Mormon
Lehi's family continues their journey to the promised land. After days at sea, Nephi's brothers and the sons of Ishmael and their wives begin to offend the Spirit with inappropriate singing, dancing, and rude speech. When Nephi counsels them to stop for fear that the Lord will become angry with them, Laman and Lemuel take him and bind him with cords. The Liahona ceases to work, and a great storm beats against the ship for three days. On the fourth day, when Laman and Lemuel are certain they will be swallowed up by the storm, they begin to see that the judgments of God are upon them so they release Nephi. The Liahona begins to work again, and Nephi steers the ship toward the promised land. Lehi’s family arrives at the promised land.

Lehi Sees an Iron Rod and Those Who Fall Away | 1 Nephi 8:19–28
In his vision, Lehi notices a rod of iron leading to the tree of life by which he stands. Next to the rod of iron is a strait and narrow path. Concourses of people are pressing forward along the path when a mist of darkness arises, and many lose their way. Those who had taken hold of the rod of iron survive the mist of darkness, arrive at the tree, and partake of the fruit. Lehi notices a great and spacious building filled with rich–looking men and women. They scoff at and mock those who have partaken of the fruit. Many are ashamed and fall away into forbidden paths and are lost.

Based on 1 Nephi 8:19–28:
19 And I beheld a rod of iron, and it extended along the bank of the river, and led to the tree by which I stood.
20 And I also beheld a strait and narrow path, which came along by the rod of iron, even to the tree by which I stood; and it also led by the head of the fountain, unto a large and spacious field, as if it had been a world.
21 And I saw numberless concourses of people, many of whom were pressing forward, that they might obtain the path which led unto the tree by which I stood.
22 And it came to pass that they did come forth, and commence in the path which led to the tree.
23 And it came to pass that there arose a mist of darkness; yea, even an exceedingly great mist of darkness, insomuch that they who had commenced in the path did lose their way, that they wandered off and were lost.
24 And it came to pass that I beheld others pressing forward, and they came forth and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press forward through the mist of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron, even until they did come forth and partake of the fruit of the tree.
25 And after they had partaken of the fruit of the tree they did cast their eyes about as if they were ashamed.
26 And I also cast my eyes round about, and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building; and it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth.
27 And it was filled with people, both old and young, both male and female; and their manner of dress was exceedingly fine; and they were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers towards those who had come at and were partaking of the fruit.
28 And after they had tasted of the fruit they were ashamed, because of those that were scoffing at them; and they fell away into forbidden paths and were lost.

Have you ever wondered where in the world Nephi and his family traveled before they set sail for the Americas? For many years, researchers have been carefully studying Nephi’s account in 1 Nephi and comparing it with the known geography of ancient Israel and the Arabian Peninsula. Amazingly, nearly every travel detail in his record can now be connected with some plausible site, route, or ancient custom or practice.
Drawing upon this research, this video follows the likely route that Nephi and his family took as they journeyed from place to place through Israel, along the borders of the Red Sea, and across the Arabian Peninsula. As will be demonstrated, the intimate relationships between his account and the known geography in the Middle East provide excellent evidence of the Book of Mormon’s authenticity.
